Staying in touch with fellow passengers at sea, and friends and family on land is easier than ever. Many ships now have branded apps that allow cruisers to chat with each other onboard. Several lines have rolled out superfast high-bandwidth Wi-Fi, with relatively affordable high-speed services that can even support video chats, music and movie streaming.

I always looked forward to going on a cruise for many reasons.
One was there was no phone cell service on the ship. Everybody miraculously put them away and we didn't see them again until we returned to Ft. Lauderdale.
Such a pleasure to not see folks with their faces buried in thei phones.

That is gone. Most cruise lines have now integrated systems that utilize smart phone technology for various functions on board.

So now we can no longer escape the social intrusion and hypnotic use of cell phones.

Princess Cruises have had on board texting (with iphones) for a couple years. I love it. We usually cruise with a group of six or eight people. Much easier now to let everyone know if there is a change in plans where to have Lunch or find out who is going to gamble and who wants to go to the Show. Saves a lot of time trying to find your Shipmates. Princess also has a their Medallion Class locators so we can find people by checking a board showing where they are at any time. Just makes life more pleasant!
