Villages newbies here. My wife still enjoys cooking, so tasty dinners at home are not an issue. But some things you just can’t make at home, like a Buddy’s deep dish pizza or a genuine De-troit Coney dog. Anything around similar to those? Would drive to Orlando if need be...

The guy at Home Depot sells coneys on the weekends with Lafayette chili. Also it is a drive but in Palm Harbor,Florida. There is a place called Detroit Coney Island. The food is excellent. They also, have a big boy burger, slim Jim’s,better maid potato chips,Faygo red pop, on fridays they have lake perch dinners. It is between tarpon springs and Clearwater on Highway 19. The owners family is from Lincoln park, mi.

Twice a year, Koegels sends down a truck to select cities on the East coast, including The Villages. It's coming again this Sunday (March 8) from noon to 3:00 PM at the Towneplace Suites hotel up by Spanish Springs. You can get their hot dogs (including Viennas with natural casings), ring bologna, etc. and they usually have Coney sauce. We buy from them at every visit and have turned a number of our friends and neighbors down here into Koegels Hot Dog Snobs (because they are simply the best hot dogs you can buy!).
Can't help you with Buddy's pizza but we have found locations of Jets Pizza (founded in Sterling Heights) as close as Altamonte Springs.

Be patient, lol. Wife and I are planning on moving there in about a year and a half. I owned and operated 2 Detroit Style pizza places in Tampa. Still make it weekly, and yes I make it at home, on the grill. I'll show you how. Maybe we'll start a club...

There was a stand / tent in front of Home Depot on 441 promoting Detroit Coneys. I haven’t tried myself but may be an option.

I really miss Buddy's Pizza and also Jets. I can't find anyone that makes a pizza close to Buddys--and I go to Orlando quite often. Piesano's is similar to Jets, Rural King has all the Faygo flavors, and you can find Vernors at Publix. The guy at Home Depot does not have the Lafayette chili all the time, but he does put it on his sign when available. Let us know if you find pizza similar to Buddys.

I have been here since 2011. I am from the Detroit area, Livonia to be exact. I have not found anything close to a Buddy's pizza nor a good coney island hot dog. Lots of dogs they put chili on, but not the same as you would get in Detroit or the suburbs--at least not that I have found. Good luck. When you find such goodies, please post! Welcome to TV!

You had my mouth watering and I was ready to hop in to the car when I saw there were Slim Jim's (Elias Bros. Big Boy)in Palm Harbor at Detroit Coney Island. I checked the website of the place and there are no Slim Jim's on the menu. Did I miss something?

If folks miss their previous towns/cities junk food so much, why move in the first place?
There is plenty of poor food available in TV as well!

The hot dog salesman at Home Depot serves up Detroit Coney Dogs on Saturday. They’re not bad... not Leo’s or Kerbys, but fine. We haven’t found anything to compare to our Rochester Hills Buddy’s pizza.

Yes, they do have the Big Boy there with both the Frisch sauce and the original Big Boy Sauce. It is not on the website menu but is on the menu at the restaurant. You can phone them to verify all the other items that are offered. It is almost as good as going back to the old days in Detroit. It's worth the trip if you really have the Michigander Craze!

Oh you didn’t miss anything. It is on a special menu that they give to you. We were there two weeks ago and my husband got one. It is a little bigger than the ones at big boy but my husband said it tastes the same. My brother got the big boy and it was the same except he had asked for a roll without seeds since he can’t have seeded buns. Give them a call. They didn’t have the bumpy cake at the time we were there. I think that menu on line is from when they were in Clearwater beach and the place was small. This is what a bumpy cake is just in case you’re not from .Michigan. Also a picture of the slim jim

I buy frozen concentrated coney sauce in small tubes at Kroger’s while in Michigan, wrap them in newspaper and plastic bags. No problem traveling with them in checked suitcases. I believe they are made by Lafayette or National. Each tube makes enough for a bunch of dogs. I am from Bloomfield Hills and Dryden Mi. I ask Michigan visitors to bring some when they visit.
Had a small hobby farm and also a party tent. Every year when the sweet corn would come in, we would invite 70 to 80 people. We cooked the corn in large stainless steal milk cans over a fire and had a crockpot of butter for dipping. I would buy a couple “blocks” of coney sauce from Gordon’s restaurant supply and the hotdogs from the Koegle factory near Flint. A couple kegs of beer completed the menu. Corn picked that morning, coney dogs and beer (coke for kids and non drinkers)
Detroit coney dogs are not chili dogs.

We try to make it back to Michigan in August just so we can get corn on the cob, especially yellow & white/peaches & cream/bi-color. SO good. We also pick blueberries then but are finding that some of the local blueberry patches (that will be ready to pick in not too many weeks now) taste at least 90% as good as Michigan blueberries. Going back then is a little too early for our other Michigan favorite - cider doughnuts. Nobody in Florida seems to know what those are. You add some blueberries and some cider doughnuts to your corn & coney dogs fest and I might have to drive back up to crash your party!
