I just moved to TV last December and have never been through storm season here. After seeing the terrible devastation in Tennessee the other night, I am wondering what storm alert system is in place in TV. If a severe storm or tornado approaches in the middle of the night, is there some kind of alert system that would likely wake us up to the approaching danger?

You can install the Weather Channel app on your phone or tablet. Then, go to settings and you can select the alerts you want.

1. Weather Radio - Villages F.D. will program for you.
2. Welcome to Sumter County, FL (https://www.sumtercountysheriff.org/services/alertsumter.php) "ALERT SUMTER"

After the tornado of 2/2/2007 the weather radios were made to be readily available at all the retail stores around TV. These are a few photos from that one.

Sign up for your county alert system. Each of the 3 counties have their own alert system, such as Alert Sumter, Alert Lake, etc. Google & sign up for text, email, and/or phone call. Very helpful. Also includes reverse 911 call.

Get the “Florida Storms” app. Focuses only on Florida weather in great detail. You can request alerts.

Don't worry about storms. We get lightening storms in the summer, just get under cover when they come up. I've been here almost 4 years. Only one hurricane 3 years ago and it wasn't too bad. As far as I know TV does not have any warning system to alert us of tornados.

To be glib about it, yeah, you'd hear a "freight train" coming at you within a couple minutes.

We have 2 such radios, one running on electricity, the other being a crank-up types. We listen to them all through any worrisome storms. Peace out.

The VCDD is probably under the impression that adults, most adults that is, have enough common sense to come in out of the rain, and wind, and threatening skies, and lightening. The only thing an alarm siren would fo for the few remaining numbskulls still on the course would be to take somewhat responsibility and liability for their safety.
But there are those that don't know any better...sad so very sad.

And the reason is liability...... it’s up to the individual to take responsibility for getting themselves to safety..... if a dumazz decides to continue to play during a thunder/lightning storm well , that’s their problem......
Should a course decide to implement an alert system, then they would be responsible to send someone out to make sure everyone leaves the course ...... that ain’t gonna happen here !!!!

Depending on a cellphone during severe weather is suicidal a tower goes down so does your service

If you are referring to the photo I attached along with the damage photos, I had it enlarged at CVS a few days after the Tornado, it was taken near the cell tower between Caroline and Mallory Hills.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful and very helpful replies. Based on recommendations here I ordered a Midland RW400 which seems to be the best fit for me.
Now I hope I never have a need for it.

If you have an Amazon Echo, you can now program it to give you instant weather alerts. A new feature that was added just a few days ago.
