I know I am going to get blasted with this post, just as all posts do but I wonder if there would be less people being snarky and rude and downright mean if we had our names and village as our username instead of hiding behind a made up username.

Damn straight there would be less! But unfortunately that isn't how "the internet" works. Besides, how would one prove their real name? It would make a whole lotta work for the mods.

Could posting all that on a public forum could lead to identity theft?

Or worse.
You wouldn't be able to post that you're heading on a cruise next week - because you'd be setting yourself up for a burglary while the criminals know you're not home.
You have to be careful on any forum, but especially on one that is exclusive to a very specific location - that is also available for anyone who is NOT a member to view.

Not blasted by me. Perfect idea. I second your 💡 idea. Lol

It's too late to make that happen. However, a computer photo or any recent photo will work as well. However, I'm also post on 3 Villages Facebook pages where most everyone has a photo, a profile and a real name for the most part, and there are still rude, inconsiderate, know-it-all people. What they try to do, is eliminate political posts like this website use to do.

The suggestion is fine.
It of course has certain associated risks, which for the most part can be mitigated with common sense.

With all due respect. given all the kooky people who live here, why in the world would someone want to give their name and address?

I don't know if I buy into this for simple reason of protection. Too many people are willing to disclose their every move and with real names and Villages leaves one exposed to the bad guys. Posting your real picture as the avatar has a high likelihood of misbelief (like the dating apps) or ruining my dinner. But I do appreciate your concept of snarky due to anonymity. Just to expand your snarky thought - why do we need to tolerate here political, religious, snarky comments because they are "below the line" at the bottom of a post. Why doesn't that count as against the rules ?

The Crispers' lunches did seem to create some respect among posters. There would be meet and greets every third Friday afternoon at 3 PM each month. And sometimes the TOTV owner then would buy lunch for everyone.
I met a few score of regulars back then when I went on-and-off from about 2008 through 2011 or so. Kind of up to when my neighbor from a few doors down-- Donna-- passed. She was a regular on here.
I have also met a number of regular posters at some of the Villages dog parks. Both "official" dog parks and those not so. Some of these people I still meet at these once in a while.
One of my favorites was a retired labor lawyer from NYC who came to Doggie Doo Run Run once a week or so. And sometimes more. Believe he passed as well.

Nothing wrong with people knowing your name and address, all that information is out there, and easy to find.
But. Posting personal information, where you are, what you are doing, when you are going on your next cruise etc. on social media, is gold dust to the scammer and thief.
Golden rule of posting. Never write what you would not say to a persons face.

It’s a shame folks have to be rude I agree. We are all so fortunate to be living & utilising this great place-The Villages. Folks need to appreciate it more & the people in it. I for one hardly ever stop smiling when I’m there!!

Then there are those who are attributed to having being rude...but are not. I think abitrarily jumping to conclusions on what someone meant without maybe a P.M. to them would suffice.
I know of some folks who have left ToTV because they were misunderstood with comments they've shared. Friends of mine, whose faces I know as well as their names. Some others would say they'd never have an account here due to the snarkiness. Now, I personally think ToTV is tame compared to some links I've seen online. Our whole culture seems to be less than polite and I wonder if it's due to technology or what the heck is going on.

Just an observation. Many complain about "snarky" or "mean" posts, but still return consistently. Makes one think that they might be afflicted with an addiction. On the other hand, one's disagreeing with another does not necessitate a derisive response. It can just be a disagreeing view. Perhaps some take a disagreeing view as being mean or bullying and take it personal because another does not share their same view?

Of course....the problem with social media is people hide their identity so they can be mean. For that reason I have stop almost all forums because people are just mean. It’s sad

go to " the villages friendly folks" facebook page. Snarky, rude, mean is not allowed and the people are deleted from the group if they do that. It is patrolled all the time by the administrator ( Angie Fox) and she takes no prisoners.

Well, do you want the truth are do you want politically correct responses. Seems to me people should be permitted to reply without fear of reprisal and in today's world to hear the truth, there should be some identity protection.

We can always ignore the rude remark. Replying to a snarky or rude post&comment just makes it worse. Plus I thought there is an Admin in this blog, no? Btw, lovinganimals is not your real name, is it? Just kidding.. My username is my real name... :-) And yet it won’t stop me from making a rude comment if I want to.. It’s all about manners and etiquette.. -myk

Hi! No, lovinganimals is not my real name but I did post it in the comments after asked. I dont mind because I'm not on here to make rude comments, I actually like people lol! I just hate to read innocent posts that are twisted to make the OP sound dumb or ignorant. It's a shame

Yes I understand what you are saying but I'm talking about totally innocent posts. For example someone posted about a bobcat attacking a duck nest near her yard. And to that, some posts were made about the bobcat having a good lunch or whatever. This person obviously cares about nature and animals. That response was totally unnecessary. So it's not politics or opinions I am against, it's just people being unkind.

I have been an advocate for abolishing anonymous posts for years. It would seem that a majority of online posters don't have the courage of their convictions.

Well, I’m not going to Blast you for you voicing your opinion, but you’re right because if you look at online Newspapers & read comments that people make there, they use their names (at least most of them do) & most of the time they do say what’s on their minds but at least they try to be nice & they get their point across. Don’t live in TV anymore but where I live now you better not make a neg. comment or a neg. joke because the people here call you a a$$hole, p_ _ _ k or about every other 4 letter word they can think of. The funny thing is you can get your point across without all the cursing. Like some guy that worked with troubled kids told me one time it’s called P.P.P. (**** poor parenting) & they didn’t learn language like that in school. So now you got my input on the subject & I never cursed at you or said anything Neg. to you. Have a great day & God Bless. PS: Am I allowed to say GOD!

This idea sounds good, but it's not. I post on the Facebook websites "Villages, Florida", "Villages Talk", "Villages World of Mouth" and "Village Insider". Those who don't know, your entire facebook page is available, photo, name, everything on your FB page and yet posting there is not much different than here. The big difference is there are more non-Villagers than TOTV, local residents from Wildwood, Fruitland Park, Summerfield and Lady Lake. Most every subject discussed here is discussed there, sometimes first before here.
