A friend of mine shared this, this morning! Read it and take a deep breath....
************************************************** *********************
"I want everyone to take a big, deep, calming breath.

I’d like to give you all a true glimpse into American healthcare and how it works, for it seems that much of the population is a bit out of touch.

Firstly, It is shocking to me how many people are concerned with their health all of a sudden. While you’re freaking out about somebody infecting you with this horrible virus, maybe put your cigarettes away, or take your medication, or eat a vegetable for once.

Shocker: It is not standard procedure to test for COVID-19. There are a number of boxes that must be ticked first, before any healthcare professional in the state of Indiana will even consider it.

If you come into the ER, urgent care, or see your regular doctor and your symptoms are mild, you are going to be going home with instructions to rest, hydrate, and treat your symptoms with over the counter medication. We may test for the flu, because it is simple, cost-effective, and yields a result (we can offer you Tamiflu). There is not a simple, cost-effective test for COVID-19. There is also very little we can do with the information, if we get it. Knowing that one is positive for this novel coronavirus may help guide treatment in some ways (isolation, shared practice knowledge), but the test itself will mean next to nothing. We treat each patient differently, based on the symptoms or distress that each patient is experiencing.

Symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Unless you are in respiratory distress, don’t even try to go to an ER. You will be sent home after waiting miserably for hours, with a big bill for your trouble. This is one of the reasons healthcare professionals can’t stand panic and hysteria-it fills our offices and emergency departments with people who should be at home resting, instead.

Per the CDC, this virus is primarily spread by people who are symptomatic. In the majority of cases, you will not spread anything to anyone else unless you are ill yourself.
Actionable things:
-Take care of yourself: eat well, stay hydrated, take your medications/vitamins, and stop freaking out (it weakens your immune system)
-Wash your hands often and don’t share things or touch your face.
-Stay home if you are unwell. (Apparently, an abundance of TP helps with this 😂)
-Keep up with the Lysol and the Clorox (and read the labels, you’d be shocked how much time it takes to properly sanitize something!)

I am an immunocompromised ICU nurse. I am not worried or afraid. These things are all second nature to me. We have to help each other out a bit, here. Quit whining about restrictions, quit panicking to no end, and just keep doing what needs to be done. Think about others for a change, too. This whole major freak-out that’s happening across the world right now? Welcome to the daily life of a family with a special needs child, or a cancer patient, or an elderly person, etc. Have some compassion and just take a deep breath.

And for goodness’ sake, if they develop a vaccination for this, remember how you feel right now and GET IT!"

So then every fall we need to shut down the country until May when the "regular" flu season ends, to prevent the 20,000+ deaths.
Brilliant!

I just returned from Publix at Lake Deaton Plaza. I had to drive around for five minutes to find an empty space for parking. That should have been my first clue. There were no carts available in the store. Shelves were empty, lines were ridiculous, there were no bananas, etc., etc., etc. I decided to return home and wait until normalcy returns in The Villages.

I would just point out that the blue line on the chart showing total cases is only going to go up as more people are tested. So, it is not a factor of more people getting sick, but of more people getting tested.

Velvet
03-13-2020, 03:44 PM
I’m wondering how many people have the signs of the illness but do not want to get tested. They may not want the stigma of being identified, just like once it was when AIDS first came on the scene. Especially since nothing effective can be done for them anyways.

For example, did Bolsonaro knew he had the virus when he shook hands?

And as you can see from this forum, selfishness is coming out of the woodwork.

That failure to be prepared with weeks to prepare is still evident, has made the problem worse and necessitated the more draconian measures now required to counteract this disease.

One of the reasons UK has not yet 'shut down for business' is the experts do not expect the virus to peak until about June, and at the moment, containment is a better option than lockdown.
With that amount of time in lockdown, they believe people will be so p***ed off, they will start back to work, socialise etc, long before the peak and most infectious period is reached.
One of the very good reasons for not shutting schools, was that many parents in work would use grandparents as baby sitters.
That would put the least vulnerable, with the most vulnerable.
Whether our medical experts and health stategists are right, we will have to wait and see.

Yeah, my 85 year old dad almost died 6 weeks ago from RSV and Pnuemonia that started as the common cold...... glad he did not. That is why I know this is hystaria, it is nothing new. Covid-19 make people who are elderly or weak more suseptible to other things like that - just like colds and the FLU. What ****es me off is the people who are all concerned about this that don't get a FLU shot every year..

My granddaughter in NJ had a high school senior trip next week to Disney for 5 days they have been paying for since they were freshmen. Disney (as of now) won't even give a refund, only a "credit" for the park & hotel due to the rate. Almost 500 kids who after school is out in June will be going in all different directions so they can't possibly reschedule and even if it reopened in 2-3 weeks there would be no availability + chartering 2 planes etc. They haven't heard yet if even charter flights will be refunded. Teachers are working on it but there is a lot of money to be lost.

I also wonder if they will extend our yearly pass which expires June 1st.

So, in your opinion, the people who are panicking, scared and hoarding TP are right; the people who advocate a more sensible approach, common sense and moderate caution (the deniers according to you) are wrong)
Hmmmmmm

Oh, but......according to the CDC so far this season

Covid-19-------1,629 cases, 41 deaths
Influenza A&B---36,000,000 cases, 22,000 deaths

Gee, I think I should join the panicked hoarders, maybe I can follow a TP truck around to its destination, kind of like the oil embargo of 1973

Pretty sad, isn't it?

Here is the BEST case death estimate from the Centers for Disease Control, yesterday, assuming the whole country does its best to self-quarantine and the disease isn’t nearly as bad as feared:
“ Dr. Lawler’s calculations suggested 480,000 deaths, which he said was conservative. By contrast, about 20,000 to 50,000 people have died from flu-related illnesses this season, according to the C.D.C. Unlike with seasonal influenza, the entire population is thought to be susceptible to the new coronavirus.”
I got that here a few minutes ago:

Seriously????

OK, "worst case scenarios":

The near Earth asteroid that will pass by in 2038 makes a direct hit and destroys the planet

Weaponized smallpox escapes from a level 4 containment lab and kills 3 billion worldwide

N. Korea has a falling out with Iran and start a nuclear exchange that ignites WWIII

Who is this Lawler clown anyway????
He thinks 480,000 deaths is conservative?
The Spanish flu in 1918-1919, the worst epidemic in the modern era, killed between 500,000 and 675,000 Americans. And that was during a world war with troops in trenches, no ICU's , no ventilators, no antibiotics and no antivirals.
Either he is the Village Idiot at the CDC, or perhaps he was talking worldwide deaths

BTW, I can't find Lawler or his prediction on the CDC website. This is apparently what the NY Times said he predicted, and we all know what that means.

In 1918 the world population was 1.8 billion. The Spanish Flu infected an estimated 500 million which resulted in 50 million deaths.

The world population today is 7.8 billion - 7X the size it was in 1918 with mobility 1000 fold over 1918.

Its true that influenza is for more prevalent but the mortality rate from Covid-19 is about 50 times times higher. You have to be more concerned un a senior citizens community because this disease is more virulent with senior citizens.

Best estimate from the CDC is that "regular" flu has a mortality rate of 0.1% and Covid-19 0.7%, so 7x, NOT 50x. But even the CDC states that the 0.7% estimate might be high and the mortality rate could be as low as 3x the "regular" flu

I know what 7 x 1.8 is. I also know what a Philadelphia lawyer is.

My point is why take this lightly. Let's get this straight immediately - I am not promoting hysteria in the least. But this sort of thing could (I said could) spread exponentially. Why not take precaution now. Some people are a lot more concerned about their investments than the health of mankind. Wonderful motivators fear and greed.

The Italian prime minister showed a graph of how quickly the cases multiplied Italy. He also overlaid other countries on that graph which have surprisingly similar curves at the early stages they are at. His point was do the isolationism before it overpowers the health care system. He said technology wise are probably able to save the lives of almost every case but it requires tools like ventilators. They are having to make some hard choices of who gets what treatment.

That's no different than here. You all complain about the tremendous waits at TV ER. Can you imagine the care you won't get if this is a true epidemic. Thus why not be a little conservative now rather than sighting some very low statistics and call this a made up conspiracy ?

And that is why I think 1918 to 2020 is apples and oranges.

Apples to oranges. There have been tens of millions of flu infections compared to a few thousand so far with coronavirus. Flu has a fraction of a percent death rate, coronavirus is around 2% (40 out of 2100) in the US. The key is to keep it from spreading, and that’s the reason for all the precautions.

:ohdear: Where did anyone say that they were not taking it seriously? Just that panic and not listening to facts is even worse. How many times do you have to be told by doctors that wearing a mask is useless in preventing the disease especially if you by mask that are less than $15 apiece. People are going crazy with toilet paper hysteria. Buying out bottle water when it is a miracle of modern life what comes out of that funny looking thing attached to your sinks. The notion that this will be any where close to the influenza pandemic is ludicrous when you look at the advances in medicine and sanitation. There has been no notice of any plant closures for bread, TP, gas or any essential items, why are people going into a panic. Worry about having a plan to help friends and neighbors that may need your help because they are highly vulnerable. They may need groceries or meds brought to them. Get plans put together, stay calm and follow cleanliness guidelines that you should have all ready been following.

A few days ago it was 9 people and now it's 70. There were 2 dozen new cases overnight. This is exponential.
Several days ago someone on TOTV was joking about no problem with enough ventilators. Now officials say there are not enough ventilators in the US to handle a substantial outbreak. In Italy they are deciding who lives or dies because they do not have enough ventilators.

On another note re: the hysteria etc. Our son lives near Madison, WI and gets up very early. He went to the local Woodman's to do their regular shopping at 4:30 a.m. (I said he gets up early). There was already a line into the parking lot and the store opens at 5:00. He had photos of the shelves. Hardly any produce, meat was empty or sparse, bread the same! He also showed the check-out lanes and they were all full with about 8 deep (or more). You'd think not only are we having a plague but also a 5-catagory hurricane. I get that one needs to be smart as well as have provisions but using common sense would be good. Think about it...you stock up for 2 weeks ahead and you use those items. On the very last day of those 2 weeks you need to go and re-plenish but you wake up with a 103* temp and body aches. What would your plan be then?? How much is enough?? Wonder if this thing goes for XX weeks or XX months? Then what?? I wish my parents were still alive to tell me what they did in 1918. Did the whole country shut down? Course back then people planted their own food items, canned it for later use etc. Life might have been harder but so much easier in that we didn't have the social media and "news" (which I tend to shut off) that continually feeds the hysteria.

Thank you Velvet for your intelligent posting. My husband and I are preparing and hiding out, knowing T.V. is going to be the epicenter of this virus when it hits this densely packed population of old folks. The 2 hospitals are already on overload.
Are people not reading, are they brainwashed by Trump, or truly stupid? My biggest scare, is when these people panic and????

Many people are like sheep and easily herded; sometimes they are like bison and stampeded. In large part the mainstream media is responsible any panic. They are driven by the need to produce whatever "news" they can to make money. No news literally means no income for them.

What I am hearing is that people do not like others hoarding because it inconveniences them. They label any action they don’t like others doing as “panic” or “political”. It seems to me that our leaders started to take the virus really seriously after they had personal exposure. Is that what it takes for some of us?

Some people seem to think that saying, “You are panicking” is actually going to help anybody not to do whatever they have decided they need to do. When one is in survival mode, logic and statistics are not going to be persuaders. (Different parts of the brain.)

My guess is that people are “hoarding” in case we will be required to stay at homes as mandated in other places to contain the virus. I believe in suggesting alternatives and trying to calm fears by giving choices for worst case scenarios if possible.

I am very sorry about the economical impacts of this virus. I have a friend who lost over a million dollars on the stock market these couple of days. I know people who are desperate for work and they need special assistance at this time.

I do not have the answers and I am, for one, listening to your suggestions.

This is apparently what the NY Times said he predicted, and we all know what that means.

i didnt realize people still read the NYT

You are so very right, and don't forget to mention along with eating vegetables and not smoking, how about getting out of your golf cart and walking, or riding a bicycle for a change! And don't forget the 3 best doctors in the world, " sunshine, exercise and laughter!"

The serious issue is when the healthcare providers will be overwhelmed and then making triage life and death decisions. This is approximately 2-3 weeks away. There will be some news that will be horrifying as compared to business as usual prior to March.
Washington, California and New York City will be the leaders with the population size.

If you listen to epidemiologist, and examine the public data from around the world, in order to stop the spread, there may have to be a total shut down, which people have never seen before. If you have never been involved in a pandemic, does that mean that the steps wont be correct?

What you are reading is the behavioral bias called "Fundamental Attribution Error", the overemphasizing personal factors and under-estimating situational factors. Also called the "Black Swan" theory, which asks the question, "If all you have ever seen are white swans, do black swans exist" Yes, they do but they are very rare, so without worldwide education or information, you will tend to go with just your own very limited experience.

If you aren't doing your part, you aren't helping everyone else, because this is going to take a national effort of serious effort to get below the R1 rate of infection to stop the spread, and if we can do it sooner than later, the healthcare system's maximum capacity might not be overrun, and the death rate remain reasonable.

I respectfully ask you to refrain from making derogatory comments about the posters. Like the above or maligning a person who's doctorate isn't medicine, or who hit a wrong key and spell check used the wrong word.

If you'd like to offer a reasoned response to what is said, then do it. Your medical credentials certainly give you gravitas, but to denigrate others is simply mean IMHO.

Dr. Fauci (who I personally trust in this) said today that he's glad at what people are calling over reaction because that is what is needed to slow the spread.

Fauci uses a metaphor from one of the fastest-moving sports to describe his strategy on the outbreak. “You skate not to where the puck is, but to where the puck is going to be,” he told a House committee.

The current population of the US is 327 million of which nearly 10% or 30,000,000 contracted the seasonal flu in 2019-2020. The death rate was .07% or 22,000 as of March 2020. Yes, this is alarming especially since we have a vaccine for this and only 45% of US adults 18 yrs or older received the vaccine.

The international death rate of COVID-19 is 2%. A hypothetical comparison would indicate that IF this is not contained, the death rate in the US could be as high as 600,000. Hopefully, it will not come to this. The death rate for infected persons who are eighty years and older is 14.8% as calculated from international data.

A course in statistics using stratified analysis should be required for anyone who graduates from high school.

Media could do a lot of good by presenting survivor stats. There are so many more survivors than deaths.............present it and let adults process all the info.

So what’s an acceptable death rate to you? This is uncharted territory. The U.S. has tested virtually nobody (I’ll let you all come to your own conclusions as to why that is). Are any of you who are complaining over the perceived media hysteria doctors or infectious disease experts? Have you listened to any interviews by (non-political) experts? I heard a WHO scientist say that approx 20% of the people who get the virus will wind up in a hospital in need of breathing assistance. Of those some proportion will die (worldmeters.info website currently shows that as being about 8%)

Of the 80% that don't end up in hospital, about half will get some sort of serious condition like scaring of the lung tissue or pneumonia - the other half will experience flu like symptoms. For the young that is not as big a deal, but they are still at risk. For the above 60 or with a pre-existing condition, that can still be fatal.

It's a numbers game, but due to how quickly this is spreading and how few hospital beds we have per person in this country, we are all at risk - much greater than that of the flu. That's why even the orange one has finally admitted we have a major problem.

I've spent some time checking reliable medical sources this morning and cannot find any hard data regarding percentage of hospitalizations or ventilatory support due to COVID-19. The national mortality rate from it is 1.9% according to the CDC as of this morning, but is likely less than 1/2 of that once more testing is available.

The estimate that 20% of those that contract coronavirus will end up in a hospital on a vent is outlandish. If 40 million Americans contract it (which is the average number for influenza each year) that would be 8 million ventilators, the US has between 100 and 200 thousand, many of them in use. More likely 2% will need hospitalization and 10% of those vent support, but even that would be 80,000 vents and overwhelming.

As far as 1/2 of 80% of outpatient victims having serious sequella, most posters on TOTV would call BS, but I'll simply call res ipsa loquitur, (the thing speaks for itself)

Exactly how is stressing over what might happen, going to change anything in one's life? Just because we do not panic, and instead think pragmatically, does not mean we are being irresponsible. Take for instance, my personal situation. I have not had a flu shot in forty years, and I have not had the flu. I have not even had a cold in the last ten years. Some folks are like that, have a pretty good immune system. I have nothing against those that wish to take precautions, but I am concerned about those that stress over what might happen, and go over the hysterical edge. I have a relative that was in contact with a friend that tested positive for the virus and then had symptoms of a cold. Everyone around her panicked for no reason, or for an imagined reason. Remember when HIV was first publicized and everyone was afraid to shake hands or be near someone infected? I am not saying to ignore the threat, just be more reasonable in your response. I wonder how many seniors will pass away due to the stress of this medical threat, rather than the actual presence of the illness in their lives.

But If you add up just the Obits everyday for the month of March, in the Sun, TVs death rate from virus is zero. So far just old age death is ahead. So why worry about what may or may not effect you

Listen to the WHO scientist by watching the CV-19 Town Hall that you can watch as a re-run on CNN. She is very credible and I would trust her vs hearsay or fake news from "the web". Her knowledge is based on direct knowledge from both China and S Korea. WHO has been calling out the severity of the problem from the beginning of the year, but unfortunately the orange one downplayed it and lost valuable time which ultimately is going to cost us a lot of American lives.

This is serious folks. Look at Coronavirus Update (Live): 188,386 Cases and 7,499 Deaths from COVID-19 Virus Outbreak - Worldometer (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus) to see the current stats and how steep the # of deaths curve is. Sorry to report that TV is going to get hit hard.

Re the mortality rate, 8% death rate of the 20% that will be hospitalized is 1.6% if you do the math. But that is if you are lucky enough to find a hospital bed. Others will be risking dealing with pneumonia at home because we do not have enough hospital beds and the current administration is not doing enough (nothing actually) to deal with that problem. The corps of engineers should be building makeshift hospitals and our factories manufacturing ventilators, but instead the orange one scores his efforts a 10 out of 10 as he is pre-occupied with the Dow and how he looks.

People have died from CV-19 and they don't even know. More testing will show that we have far many more cases, and also many more deaths. The percentages should align with the worldwide stats and they are not good.

Here you go doc. Search results said it took .53 SECONDS to locate this data.

"Initial reports suggest that COVID-19 is associated with severe disease that requires intensive care in approximately 5% of proven infections."

Read that again and perhaps let that sink in. That's a LOT of ICU beds that we DON'T have!

The paragraph that should grab everyones attention -

While mortality among all infected patients may be in the range of 0.5% to 4%,1 among patients who require hospitalization, mortality may be approximately 5% to 15%, and for those who become critically ill, there is currently a wide mortality range, from 22% to 62% in the early Hubei Province case series.2,4 The exact cause of death is unclear at this point, with progressive hypoxia and multiorgan dysfunction being the presumed causes.

Even if they flatten the curve, a lot of people are going to die.

If you believe some of the panic once you get the virus you have 2 days. Average ICU stay can be 5 to 7 days for normal issues. So virus will free up multiple ICU bed every 48 hours.

Sorry I can’t panic over what may or may not happen. I am just looking to get thru 7 days of call, that I volunteered for.

Here's a country with a poor health system that, so far, refuses to implement any common sense social distancing. Iran will be an interesting case study in how NOT to protect your population.

(Incidentally, Covid-19 is running rampant through their prison system, so the government decided to release 85,000 prisoners into the general population.)

If not, then please take the time to listen to a Mr. Michael Osterholm. He IS an infectious disease expert. He’s served his country in the last five presidential administrations including this one. If you actually listen to what the experts have to say and then still believe this pandemic is a hoax...good luck to you. You’re probably going to need it.

I don't think Dewilson58 is minimizing the number of people who die from Coronavirus. I think he is suggesting that it would be educational to report all the statistics associated with Coronavirus.

Some are giving advice on how to prepare for taking care of yourself in case you do get sick and that hospital bed is not available - worth finding and listening to it. (Dr Amy Compton-Phillips has some good advice ... monitor your own oxygen levels and also temperature)

For those who still don't believe, Italy are a little ahead of the curve. It may be worth taking a trip over there and explaining to them how this is all a hoax and just unnecessary panic.

They say the problem is that pandemics only come once per generation or so, so by the time the next one comes around the lessons have been lost. It certainly seems that way today.

:faint: It is very simple and can be done in 5 minutes. If you need beds there are huge amounts of hotels that are very empty. There are cruise ships that are empty. Yes there will need to be modifications and other considerations but if our anointed politicians can not think on their feet they need to get out of the way.

It's not the "beds" that are needed: it's the medical equipment.

This pandemic is serious and everyone should follow CDC and state guidelines.
That being said, I still feel the media is hyping the problem and adding to the panic. Every day they post the number of US deaths on the screen, but without any comparison----I wish they would put up the numbers as below:

COVID-19 deaths---------------150
Influenza deaths------------18,000
Death total-----------------588,708

In the US as of this morning

Doesn't mean don't take CV seriously, but presenting the data in this fashion puts a whole different perspective on it.

Oh, and yes, before some "expert" points it out, I am aware that total deaths and influenza deaths are a fairly stable number, and CV is on the ascending limb of the curve.

Three weeks from now the Chicken Littles will be wondering what to do with their 100 rolls of toilet paper, 5 gallons of milk, 20 pounds of potatos, etc.etc.

Never thought TV..with so many educated people, would fall for mass hysteria like this.

Just told my cats...they will be dinner in a month

This post will not age well. The United States is ahead of the curve that Italy was on as cases have effectively doubled in just two days.

Yes and no. First of all, we have a much larger population, therefore equal raw #s of cases are NOT equal. Secondly, we have a huge backlog of tests that weren't run, so the curve looks steeper than it really is as that data comes in. Still, we can expect things to get worse before they get better

Media could do a lot of good by presenting survivor stats. There are so many more survivors than deaths.............present it and let adults process all the info.

They have stated that, so far, the survival rate is 98 to 99 percent. That has been reported several times.
