I think you still have to file by 4/15 but if you owe, payment is extended to 7/15?

You can avoid paying till July and by filing an extention not file the return till then also.

Why sit down and risk exposure meeting your Cpa now when you can wait

Steve’s complete WSJ article is hidden behind a pay wall. Here is a link to the IRS website.
Payment Deadline Extended to July 15, 2020 | Internal Revenue Service (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/payment-deadline-extended-to-july-15-2020)
My reading of this is you must either file a return or for an extension by April 15th. Just do not think you have a three month extension to do anything.

You don't need an extension. The tax filing deadline has been changed (this year only) from April 15th to July 15th. If you haven't had your taxes prepared by July 15th, then you can get a 6-month extension. An extension does not give you longer time to pay - your taxes must be paid by the filing deadline.

Google ‘How to file for an extension’
Go the the irs.gov link - make sure it’s the irs link

Follow the instructions for e-filing the form. No need to download the form and mail it in.

Be aware that if you file for an extension you still have to pay an estimated tax amount by the filing deadline.

Not sure how that works now that the deadline has moved to July.

The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service are providing special payment relief to individuals and businesses in response to the COVID-19 Outbreak. The filing deadline for tax returns remains April 15, 2020. The IRS urges taxpayers who are owed a refund to file as quickly as possible. For those who can't file by the April 15, 2020 deadline, the IRS reminds individual taxpayers that everyone is eligible to request a six-month extension to file their return.

This payment relief includes:
Individuals: Income tax payment deadlines for individual returns, with a due date of April 15, 2020, are being automatically extended until July 15, 2020, for up to $1 million of their 2019 tax due. This payment relief applies to all individual returns, including self-employed individuals, and all entities other than C-Corporations, such as trusts or estates. IRS will automatically provide this relief to taxpayers. Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the IRS to qualify for this relief.

They have extended to tax date to July 15th.

I have filed with Turbotax and I owe money. I wanted to use the extension but there is no way to prove that I did my taxes through Turbotax. So does this mean I have to file by April 15th. Thanks

You said you “filed” your taxes through TurboTax.

Why would you need to prove anything if they have been filed ???

Unless you meant that you “completed” your taxes and have not yet SUBMITTED them to the IRS ???

In any event, it has been posted numerous times that you don’t need to submit (file) your taxes until the July 15 deadline extension......

I was in the same situation, having had AARP Tax Aide do my taxes for the past few years for free. I decided to try Turbo Tax and was very happy with the process. They talk you thro everything and even e-file for you for nothing. All free, although they try to sell you an upgrade, but I found it wasn't necessary.

HappyRetired

I agree with stits128. Why wait at all? TurboTax or go to the IRS site and file free on-line. They take you through step by step and you fill in the information that is applicable to you. You pay or get refunds through your bank account--and they show you how to do that too. Just like AARP, except you have to type it yourself.

The income tax filing date has been pushed back from April 15 — the deadline will now be July 15, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

Mnuchin announced the decision in a tweet Friday saying that at President Donald Trump’s direction “we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15.

All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties.”

I believe you, my expertise is certainly not in finance. But, I've learned when dealing with the government, I like to see it in an official written statement. NYS dept. of taxation is still trying to fine me for not filing corporate tax returns even though I retired 6 years ago and marked the last return "final"

I've always wanted to use that conspiracy theory phrase! LOL :)

The April 15th federal "deadline" for individuals is not actually a filing deadline (not just this year, but always), unless you have a balance due.

Why? Because penalties for late filing are a percentage of the balance due. No balance due = no penalty for filing whenever you'd like. Of course, if you wait more than a year to file, you might get reminder letters from the IRS, but still no penalties, if you don't owe any tax.

For states with individual income taxes, there may be a penalty for filing after their stated due dates.

Filing deadlines for entities filing as corporations ARE real, and penalties for late filing (without timely filed extensions) can be very substantial - even if not tax is due.

One thing to be careful about this year: While the filing and payment "deadlines" have been moved to July 15, 2020 for the 2019 tax year, the due dates for 1st and 2nd quarter estimated quarterly tax payments has NOT yet been extended. So, if you don't make the appropriate amount of estimated tax payments by April 15, 2020 and June 15, 2020, you may be subject to penalties and interest on the underpayments. I've requested that the Treasury Department extend these due dates, but they have not yet done so (and may not). So, what should you do? My unofficial advice is to make your best guess and send-in quarterly estimated income tax deposits by their due dates.

Truth be told: I am a CPA with a tax specialty. However, I happily retired in November, 2019.
