View Full Version : Do you think the virus will be under control by Easter? (approx 3.5 weeks from now)

Given the statistics, and what has happened in China, Italy, Spain, New York, etc., (AND DON'T INVOLVE POLITICS), do you think the country will really be ready to re-open by Easter? Easter is April 12th.

Easter is 18 days from today. More like 2 1/2 weeks.

Two and 1/2 weeks not three and 1/2 weeks! We all hope this is the case but I find it hard to hear stupid stuff like that when American's in New York are facing the real possibility of not enough ventilators.
I wish all of our politicians and news reporters could state the facts and real solutions. There is no need for hours of face time with off the subject thoughts and feelings. It's just not helpful!

No, with people being permitted to enter Fl and other states from infected areas will allow this virus to IMHO be a threat to at least mid-summer, unlike China we are not a dictatorship, and control is not that strict

Of course it won't be "ready to open" by Easter. It's a ridiculous expectation and only the gullible would believe it.
That isn't the point though. The point is - someone expects it to be open by Easter ANYWAY. Whether it's ready or not.

No I hope I'm wrong but I think we're only getting started. To many people are not following the suggested rules, traveling, going anyway they feel they want to. My guess we'll be lucky IF we're ready for 4th of July without stricter mandates. The more testing that's being done is turning up more cases of the virus and people are still worried about vacations really ? would you want to go on a cruise ship with a quick turn around from previous cruise or an airplane with your lucky the trash was picked up or a long car trip with rest areas shut down and people from god knows where traveling. Nope staying put period.

COUNTRY "ready to be open" is way too broad and all-encompassing.
I believe the intent (and Pres Trump's declaration) meant to imply NOT the ENTIRE USA. But, as he finally confirmed after being questioned, it MAY apply to those areas of the country that show no or very little CV-19 infections. As of now, and perhaps 2 weeks from now as well, there are so many areas not affected or have few infections. They should follow the guidelines to limit or stop CV-19 spread.
Of course much of the northeast, northwest, southwest, upper midwest, and perhaps south FL will prob be quarantined for many weeks as dictated by the testing population data.

Those areas that are not infected - unless they SHUT down and stay down, will soon become hotspots for "refugees" from the infected states to flee to in the hopes that they'll find safety and good health there. And of course - it's inevitable that some of them will themselves be infected and spread to those currently-healthy states.
That is what happened in Florida.
Think of it as a rust spot on a car. You can cut the rust out but if you don't protect the edges it'll not only get rusty again, it'll spread and rust the whole thing.

CovidActNow.org was created by a team of data scientists, engineers, and designers in partnership with epidemiologists, public health officials, and political leaders to help understand how the COVID-19 pandemic will affect their region.
This tool is built to enable political leaders to quickly make decisions in their Coronavirus response informed by best available data and modeling.
We built this tool to answer critically important questions such as:
What will the impact be in my region be and when can I expect it?
How long until my hospital system is under severe pressure?
What is my menu of interventions, and how will they address the spread of Coronavirus?
Who built this tool?

With the total lack of control of who comes into the state from where along with far too many not adhering to the avoidance guidelines......the potential seems to be FL could be much worse by Easter.

And not getting political, we also need to be concerned about Mexico and transit thru it into the US as they are just now starting to bloom in number of cases. They seem to be behind us at least 2 weeks or so in cases reported (we have no way of knowing how many are actually ill and able to get tested or not). With the Canadian boarder, I have more confidence in the stats being reported by a non impoverished "land connected" route into the US.

I agree. Weeks ago I said the US needed a total lockdown to burn the virus out. That opportunity came and went. Pragmatically speaking, our leaders are now BALANCING infections/death and economic destruction.
I agree with the epidemiologists that say "most" of us (~70%) will become infected. Life will not "return to normal" until we have a vaccine (~18 months away). Again, this is what top epidemiologists are stating. (I'm just agreeing.)
This is going to be a long period of disruption to normal routine for everyone, especially our vulnerable population. It appears the current thinking is to "open up" the country and perhaps quarantine the most vulnerable.

I guess I don't understand the chart showing available hospital beds at something around 30,000. I am reading it wrong?. Total hospital beds are 924,000.

Some parts of the US where there are few cases could be open right now. So yes they’ll be ready by Easter. But when you look at heavily impacted states or hot areas, those will not be ready to “open” by Easter and if they are “forced” to there will likely be a second wave in my opinion, like in Singapore. Rules were relaxed too soon.

The parts where there are few cases, are the parts where "people worried about catching it in their own areas" go. And they will bring their germs and virii with them.
As long as people can GET from point A to point B, no place is immune to this thing.

I believe that each state will again decide one by one whether to open their restrictions. I don't think those states, like New York, currently completely locked down are going to be ready to lift all restrictions.
As far as Florida, I think our state government will lift all restriction in less than 4 weeks.

The rest of the world is suffering tremendously. And we are concerned that we cannot go on with our FAIRYTALE life. We can all do our part. STAY HOME!!!
Watch TV. Call people to say : how you doing? Go outside for a walk. If you have been charitable all your life - be charitable now. Think about others please. Italy has left people over the age of 60 with no ventilators. They will just die. Lord knows I don’t want it to come to that extreme. Just think about TV. Most of us are over 60...

Things are still changing WAY TOO FAST.
The best indicator of how many people feel about the future is probably how the markets are changing. ... and we all know how that is whip-sawing back and forth.
I remain hopeful, and if we all can keep up on vigilant cleaning and distancing, the resolution of this will be here sooner and for the better.
Stay healthy!

We need to keep in mind that the places with the most positive cases are almost universally ALSO the places that are doing lots of testing. Until widespread testing is available (and it's nowhere near that yet), we have no idea how many people are infected and spreading this thing around. Hong Kong did a quick lockdown with good results....then relaxed the restrictions too soon and now they're seeing a surge in infections. We should NOT do that! Especially here, with it's preponderance of residents over 60.

My concern is that if our economy collapses, society as we know it will be destroyed. Our money will be worth nothing. There will be no food, no supplies, no services, no law and order and no healthcare. We can forget about quality of life and life as we know it. People will die from starvation and lack of care. There are no easy alternatives, but everything hinges on stabilizing our economy.

Yes, but on the other hand, if we die because of the virus, our money won’t be worth much to us anyways. First things first.

That's a valid concern, as is calling the "all clear" too soon. But we can't stay hunkered down forever.
That's what Trump is referring to the cure being worse than the disease.
Let's hope he makes the right call when the time comes to do so.

Everything hinges on preventing the virus from exploding. There is not a choice between the economy and preventing the virus from devastating the health of Americans. How do you think our quality of life will be with huge numbers of sick and dying. Will the infected be going to work. It is a false dichotomy.

Tongue in cheek!
Clearly there was some unreasonable panic in the statement. The sooner the country fights the war of the virus, the economy will spike. Everyone will be ready and anxious to get their lives back to normal. This economic downturn is not due to a poor economy, our country had good economic bones before we went into this. We will come out on the other side stronger for it.
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. We are the HOME OF THE BRAVE.
