Today's Daily Sun posted the results from Monday's testing for the coronavirus. They wrote: "“Of the 120 patients with symptoms who were given clinical tests, two were positive for COVID-19. None of the 300 patients without symptoms were positive.” These are great results. Even better, the two who tested positive had already been self quarantining.

If you have NO symptoms why are they being tested and using up the needed test kits? If there was not a possible potential legal problem they should be turned away. This is only common sense but the problem with common sense is that it is not so common

People with no symptoms could sign up this week for a UF research project. They will be used in longer term research of the disease to try and track the disease spread. It is a good thing all the non symptomatic patients did not test positive.

Best to educate yourself before casting aspersions. UF is conducting a research program which involves asymptomatic subjects who volunteer to help them. You’re right about common sense.

Really good news. My husband took part in the research group. When he came home, I made him take off all of his clothes and I sprayed him with the garden hose. ( I did it discretely in the side yard) ;)

Anything from day 2? I got tested on Tuesday and I haven't heard a thing. It's been the max 72 hours. I called UF and they knew nothing about it. They said to call the hospital because they conducted the tests. I called the hospital and they said they knew nothing and told me to call UF. I think the whole thing was a scam. Kidding but frustrated.

VDS is reporting 8 positives with 800 tested as of day two. Hopefully more info tomorrow.
Not very comforting since in other areas they found there may be 10 ~ 15 more for every positive test.

8 out of 800 is only 1% positive. That actually sounds good. Zero would be better but still.
I think I read (not sure) where something like 25% of the people in NYC who took the test were positive.

This is a nonlinear situation, need to think exponentially, we are on a doubling every 3 days trajectory if there is no mitigation.

You can find information on the number of cases per county and city and more on Florida’s health page Home | Florida Department of Health COVID-19 Outbreak (https://floridahealthcovid19.gov/#latest-stats). Look at the dashboard and report buttons toward the bottom of the page for detailed information.
What’s really exciting is as of Monday, Sumter county had about 45 results, of which 5 were positive. Now we have 445 results with 29 positive, so when we started more widespread testing the percentages went down.

I'm certain that your inconvenience was forefront in their minds when they booked their cruises 6 months ago. I'm certain if they knew then what they know now, 99% of them would choose to not take the cruise. (There's always one, right?)

What makes you think they didn't start that cruise before this became known? Not all cruises are for 5 days or so. My cruises are at least a month long.

You had better read PoliticoFlorida's reporting as of last night, March 27. Now five confirmed cases in TV, per the Fla. Dept. of Health in Sumter County. 29 in Sumter County; 24 in Lake; 8 in Marion. The numbers will grow!

Bottom line, if we could put a law into affect to keep people at home for 14 days after they have traveled from outside the area, whether from a different state or Country, we all may be able to get back to life! Most of these cases are travel related or exposure to someone close to them.

There were two arms to the testing. One for people referred by a physician because they had symptoms, and the second is a RESEARCH STUDY for people without symptoms. The UF medical school is doing this to try to find out more about the actual disease and hopefully find a cure. My husband and I went for the RESEARCH STUDY and I tested negative, we are still waiting for my husband's results. Hope this explains it.

Just the Daily Sun would use the word "only" in regard find finding 8 positive cases in the Villages in just 2 days of limited testing. There is nothing encouraging about this statistic. Currently Sumter County (which is mostly The Villages) has the 3rd highest rate of infection in Florida (only trailing Broward and Miami-Dade).
As of the March 27, The Florida Department of Health reported 27 cases in The VIllages. The numbers in Florida are growing rapidly every day and unless we take seriously the warning to stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel, things are not going to be Daily Sun Pollyanna much longer.
Want facts.... Home | Florida Department of Health COVID-19 Outbreak (https://floridahealthcovid19.gov/) will take you to the Florida Department of Health page with a wealth of data and statistics.

I do love the Florida Department of Health pages of data and statistics. As of March 27th at 5pm it shows Sumter at 6% of those tested testing positive. Lake at 5%, Marion at 3%. Average for the state is 9%. It does not show us as third behind Miami Dade and Broward, but rather tied for 29th with 5 other counties out of 68 counties.
I am encouraged that for those with symptoms we are only at 6%.
Yes, as we test more we will find more cases. Yes, we should follow CDC guidelines of social distancing and staying healthy with reasonable exercise no closer than 6 ft from others. No, we should not be licking doorknobs and hugging strangers.

Note that I was referring to “rate of infection” which is the number of cases as it relates to population. Sumter County has a far greater number of cases for the size of our county than every other county, except Broward and Miami-Dade.

That really only works if we are testing the entire population, or even the same percentage of folks across the state. In Sumter county they have tested a significantly higher percentage of the people than they have in either Broward or Miami Dade. On a per capita basis we have tested 3 times the number they have tested in Orange County. The more tests, the more cases.

Because this is a test site for the university of florida to get research material to help design a drug to kill this virus. Don't people read, hear or do research on this topic on the internet through one of the medical sites? Try it and you might get really informed that your grandchildren are apt to get this as well.

You are right in one aspect, that because the inadequate testing being done in Florida and the US, we won't know the magnitude of our inaction until the bodies start piling up. But given that our testing rate (367 per 100,000) is on a par with Broward/Dad (260 per 100,000) and Broward/Dad is considered the epicenter of the Florida outbreak, I'd say there's cause for concern in Sumter.

Coronavirus Spreading In The Villages (Click Here) (http://www.politico.com/states/florida/story/2020/03/27/coronavirus-spreading-in-the-villages-1269421)
TALLAHASSEE — At least five residents from The Villages have contracted the coronavirus through community spread or close contact with someone else who had the virus, according to the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County.
The Villages is a rapidly growing retirement community of more than 50,000 residents that spans three north central Florida counties. Most of the community is in Sumter County, where 29 people have tested positive for the virus as of Friday.

Cold water is not that helpful. Hot water melts the outside covering of the virus and destroys it.
The CDC recommends using cold or warm water with soap for washing hands.
"Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap."
When and How to Wash Your Hands | Handwashing | CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/when-how-handwashing.html)
The also say that hot water should not be used to wash hands.
"Wet hands first with water (do not use hot water)"

I got tested yesterday and am awaiting results. I have no symptoms but because I called out of work with my allergies two days last week they wanted me tested before I returned. I believe six of my co-workers are in the same boat.
I'd rather be safe than sorry and I'm glad my employer is looking out for us.
Because it's a study by UF Health you don't need to have symptoms to be tested. They want to test 16,000 people for the study and it's free. It's painless and quick and I urge everyone to get tested for their own piece of mind.
Go to this website at 8 a.m. when they release appointments for the next day.

Care must be used when trying to reach conclusions based on the limited reported statistics. Based on the UF testing, the numbers reported in the paper this morning were 8 out of 420 symptomatic people tested positive and 0 out of 600 asymptomatic people tested positive. Trying to reach any conclusions on how many actual positives are in The Villages from that limited set of data is probably not worthwhile unless it can be shown that the small number of people tested are representative of The Villages population overall.
Would that rate make it 1,500 positives for The Villages population?

We were in the research group yesterday. I think they did the testing five days (M-F). So more results will be coming in over the next several days.
I asked the med student who did our swab whether more testing will be done. She said it depends on the amount of supplies they have. She said to watch the newspaper for further information. We found out about it through a friend but there was a article in the DS—maybe more than one last week.
The process was extremely well organized and professional. I’d encourage anyone to volunteer.

I should also have added it was easy to register on the website. First, you answer a brief questionnaire and are assigned to Group A or B.
You choose an appointment time, enter some personal data, then print out a consent form and a confirmation. You bring these to your appointment along with a photo ID. Be sure to read instructions carefully. I could have missed something here.

I am curious about those who volunteered for the Research Study and took the test.
What kind of questionnaires did you have to fill out?
What follow up was planned for you?
Will you be returning for additional tests or be followed in some manner?
Were you asked to self isolate, even if your results were negative?
Were you asked to keep a journal of any contacts you have with other people or visits to public places such as grocery or drug store?
Were you asked about mental health issues such as anxieties?
Were you asked about any existing health issues, i.e. diabetes or heart disease?
Were you given any guidelines about social contacts?

So my questions about the survey and followup on those testing negative here in The Villages is important.

"If they are concerned yet do not have symptoms nor meet standard clinical testing criteria, they will have the opportunity to sign up for a UF research study that enables them to receive testing as part of an epidemiological protocol known as community surveillance. The purpose of the study is to assess the degree of asymptomatic viral shedding at the onset of a COVID-19 outbreak.
