View Full Version : Bicycle Club Spitting Advice!!!

YouNeverKnow

I could not believe the piece in the paper today about the Lake Sumter Bicycle Club and the advice their president gives them for riding! Specifically if you need to spit you should ride in the rear! No one should be spitting! What about golf carts that might be following the group or convertibles passing by the group and having the last person in the group spitting into the air? She says she felt it best to follow the CDC guidelines for group riding.
I don’t remember the CDC saying it’s ok to be spitting into the air while moving.
If you feel the need to be spitting STAY HOME!

How disgusting. Spitting is gross and spreads germs which we should be trying not to do at this time.

Okay - I do ride almost every day - I do NOT have any spandex outfits, shorts and a T shirt work just fine. I was just wondering what they/we are entitled to. I may be missing out on something or not but what is it. I ride the intermodal paths most of the time and have almost been wiped out three times (and counting probably) by some moron in a golf cart. I have seen folks in golf carts spitting. Spitting is ugly and if I have to do it because of the exercise level I am very careful of where and when but occasionally it is needed. So there it is. And here we go - anyway stay healthy!!

There is no "P" or "N" in Sumter. There is however a "T" and "N" in Gantner.

today while traveling in my golf cart I approached a tunnel and a guy on a bike came roaring out, failed to stop at the stop sign, and never even looked left to see if anyone[me] was coming-at the next intersection he went through without stopping and I yelled "hey stop sign"--he turned around and pulled up beside me to say " I can drive however I want"---now if that's not a guy who thinks he's entitled ,I don't know what is-these guys feel they're above our traffic laws

So what do you do for exercise "YouNeverKnow"?

Golf, walk, swim, dance, ride the recliner?

And, you never spit?

Really?

I don't know about that poster but I ride my bike often, partly for transportation and partly for exercise. Mostly because I enjoy riding it. I ride solo; I don't like sharing my riding time with other people.

And - the only time I EVER spit is at the dentist's office, or after I've brushed my teeth.

Maybe there's a correlation between bicycle riders who wear spandex and those who seem entitled?? Riders like you, by contrast who wear shorts and a T-shirt, would seem to me more normal and less likely to be entitled.

Therefore, maybe all we have to do is ban spandex while riding bikes and problem solved. :a040:

I appreciate your honesty but what “exercise level” requires spitting? I’ve exercised my entire life and never did I spit or even think about it. I’m serious. I’ve never heard of this before. I’ll need to pay more attention when I see a bicycle group.

Spitting is just a bad, disgusting habit. It has nothing to do with “exercise level”

Hey, let's try to look at the glass half full. Spitting is probably better than pinching one nostril shut, closing the mouth, and giving a quick blow to clear out the other nostril. It's all relative. I know a good joke to describe that, but in todays PC world I will leave the joke up to ones imagination.

Cyclists want cars/carts to obey traffic laws so they can roll through stop signs, red lights, and obstruct traffic. They will ride in the traffic lanes even though the cart path is right next to it. Beyond entitled, they are arrogant. I say if they are not on the cart path, they should be ticketed.

I have yet to see one stop for a stop sign. Sometimes they slow down , take a quick look and breeze thru the sign. Other times, they take a quick look and never slow down. I have been here since 2005 and don't remember seeing any bicycles on the model paths for many years. Don't think TV had planned on this and some of the model paths are not wide enough for both much less the runners, walkers, bicycle, 3 wheeler's and etc. IMO, Think a special path beside the model path is needed for these folks.

I am a cyclist. I can tell you I never see a golf cart stop (three second legal wheel stop) at a gate cross crossing if there are no cars at the gate. They just roll right through. Same thing goes for crossings the entrance of rec centers. Carts all blow through stops signs everywhere. I had an entitled golf cart pull out in front of me countless times or pass me on a curve and almost head on into an oncoming cart. Friday I saw an entitled golf cart come up to a red light on Odell and since there were no cars coming, run the red light! I rarely see cars slow down at a gate entrance if there is a broken gate. Believe me it goes both ways. I agree spitting is disgusting but do you know how much litter I see in the street gutters riding. Cigar and cigarette butts are everywhere and water bottles as well. There are bad actors on both sides.

Spit or swallow that is a dilemma. Because most bicyclist don’t know how to ride. They blow through stop signs and take up entire lanes on a public highway. Good luck to those cyclist who feel the need to be in competition with a 4500 pound vehicle going 35 miles an hour!

I'm actually more concerned about the amount of flatulence being emitted into the air from all these bikers as they grunt and pump hard to keep up with the rest of the herd....wonder why their president isn't making any statements around position in line regarding flatulence emissions????

just a thought, maybe spitting is 'biker code' for flatulence?

No, it's not just you. While they're quick to tell you the law says they can ride on the roads I see VERY FEW following the Rules of the Road.

There are some real shallow comments here. It is not limited to cyclist just because some of you seem to despise them. Just this past week I saw a golf cart driver toss his cigarette butt on the multi use path in front of me. I also watched 2 different carts exit a tunnel without stopping, one striking another cart. I also witnessed at least 10 carts not stopping at stop signs. I watched a cart operator cut a bike off allmost sending the rider into a fence. I saw a cart rider puking in the grass on Buena Vista at El Camino near the pond. Last week I saw a pickup truck driver try to beat a cyclist that was merging on Enrique at El Camino, when he did not win and the cyclist rightfully looked at him wrong, the pickup driver cussed him out terribly at the light. My money was on the cyclist who looked like he could have broken the driier in half. So just because you have a problem with cyclist, it does not mean they are the only people out there that are disgusting pigs

I will add, at least half the golf cart drivers I see are so fat that they couldn't ride a bicycle 50 yards.

I see GOLFERS spitting on the greens, daily! Men spitting on sidewalks. Spitting everywhere. No one should be spitting.
“Other diseases that are spread through saliva include TB, hepatitis, viral meningitis, cytomegalovirus - a common virus similar to the herpes virus - and the Epstein-Barr virus, which is a common herpes virus that causes many diseases such as glandular fever”
Just cut it out, people!
It’s totally unnecessary and disgusting.

Can't argue with that. I haven't seen that much concentrated dysfunction on the part of golf car drivers, but I've sure seen some

Some really good points here. I have also seen golf cart and automobile drivers doing literally everything that people here have complained about bikers doing. Some things I've seen drivers (but not bikers) do: empty ashtrays onto a parking lot; throw fast food bags, cups, bottles onto the road or shoulder while driving; intentionally intimidating others (bikers) by driving too close and/or blowing their horn while passing; blocking the crosswalks while stopped at intersections. The list goes on and on...

Yep, some bikers act like idiots; so do operators of every other type of vehicle. Why did this turn into such a rant against cyclists?

As to the original topic, sometimes expectorating can be necessary, such as if there is excess phlegm or saliva, etc. If it done with a certain amount of discretion, as the president of the LSBC seems to be advising, what's the big deal? It's not so much different than dealing with the snotcicle while in the pool.
