Not sure what that means. 5 neighbors insisted on a driveway party and now they’re sick? I truly don’t know that expression.

These are probably the people that think: "I Know all my friends so therefore I can't get it."

They should be asked: DO you know where and when your friends shop or where they get gas or how many people they walked by in those places or what they touched? I hear this all the time. My sister said the same thing to me. We're brother and sister. SO WHAT? You just went to Marion Market. Stay away from me for 2 weeks!

The folks who were, again, crowding Lake Sumter Square this evening....no parking spaces on the square.....tables and chairs and tail gating all around the square and filled the area where the radio station and covered picnic tables.....absolutely no social distancing anywhere.

No different than the pictures of all the young people on the beaches for spring break.....except older...BUT NOT ANY SMARTER!!

As a result of the few we need a stay at home 'ORDER" with enforcement and stiff fines.

As a former UPI reporter I gave this article a D- minus. Community Spread is not defined by the writer, yet it's a key descriptor in the headline. Even the suggestion of its plain meaning, that the Community is seeing the virus advance because of something the community shouldn't be doing - is unsubstantiated.

"A serious outbreak inside the community could have devastating effects. Most who show symptoms from the virus develop a fever or cough and may have trouble breathing, though they do recover."

Consider this two-sentence paragraph. Couldn't the first sentence be said of any community? This has nothing pertinent to offer readers with an interest specific to The Villages.

"Prior to the opening of the testing site, The Villages slowly began to shut down its expansive social scene. That’s after the community — which leans Republican — had sought to downplay the virus’s affects as President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed confidence the virus would be contained inside the U.S."

First, it's effects, not affects. This writer has a law degree, which made me marvel not only at his spelling, but also at his assertion that the community had sought to downplay the "virus's affects" (sic). In my opinion, his statement is invidious and made without any substantiation. His additional reference to politics (apparently the real cause of the spread of infection) is another irrelevant injection in what purported to be a story about disease. And when did the president ever state that the virus would be contained within the US? Let me be clear, the Wuhan virus started in...where was it?...oh, yeah, Wuhan. How can it be contained in the US?

I know, he means something else. But that's why E.B. White said you should re-read your own work, because while you think you may have said what you meant, chances are very good you haven't.

He also uses a couple propaganda devices to take a swipe at the president. One is "Authority". He quotes a nurse (a healthcare authority) but he doesn't quote her on healthcare. He quotes her on politics to leverage her authority into an area it doesn't apply. He uses her to spread the false claim that people (Trump has been the one accused of this) have called the virus a hoax. Here is what he said:

"One of my people came up to me and said, “Mr. President, they tried to beat you on Russia, Russia, Russia. That didn’t work out too well. They couldn’t do it. They tried the impeachment hoax that was on a perfect conversation. They tried anything. They tried it over and over. They’ve been doing it since you got in. It’s all turning, they lost, it’s all turning. Think of it. Think of it. And this is their new hoax.” (DJT 2/28/20)

Finally, he uses her comment on the awakening of the community as though this one person has her finger on The Villages pulse. That's just bad judgment. Maybe D-minus is generous.

5 community spread cases in The Villages.

I went walking last night. Saw two neighborhood parties.

One was fine. About six couples side by side but distanced at least 10 feet apart spread over two driveways and part of the street.

Then, later in my walk, saw another party with maybe 10-15 people all on the same driveway but only a few feet apart. Some people still don't get it.

This implies a Darwinian selection may be going on over the next few weeks.

Because The Villages is described as an "extended spring break for adults" these people are believing that it's true, and acting like the morons who crowded the beaches because they didn't want to miss out. Go for it, people! Party on! You'll find out soon enough that you should have paid attention when you had the chance.

The CDC is now saying that over a million Americans could have had the China Virus prior to February back into November due to the number of Chinese people traveling here, however it was either undiagnosed because it was not severe or it was misdiagnosed as the common flu which has killed 10 times more people. Pandemic or fear pushing by the media. I know one thing, it is like the flu in this way and we don't shut the country down. You are probably going to get it in someway, some will die, some will never know they have it and most will deal with it for 10 days and go on with their lives. Just like the flu. So get over the hysteria, people get sick in life, people die. If not by corona virus, then by any one of a million other illnesses.

There is no problem being "out and about" if you avoid getting near other people. I certainly don't wish to be trapped in my house for the next several months. I am outside walking, on my bike, or in my golf cart at least three hours per day. But, I make sure I pass no closer than six feet from anyone. If I see four people walking abreast on a multi-modal trail, I simply walk off until they pass.

A disaster waiting to happen is take-out food. I tried that once, but never again. Too many people were getting way too close and all using the same pens, folders for bills, etc.

Rule of thumb if you want to be safe: avoid getting near folks, keep your distance, even with your "best friend" you have known since grade school. He or she may have picked up the virus an hour ago and has no way of knowing. Assume everyone is a carrier and anything you bring in your house is infected. Better safe than sorry for a few months.

A woman friend of ours drove a male family friend to his chemo therapy treatment on 3/17. He tested positive yesterday and is now on a ventilator, and she and her husband are now waiting on tests and not feeling well.

The danger is spread from asymptomatic people! which is why isolation and quarantine is the only realistic way to break the transmission.

Note: this information is first hand and the purpose of the post is to relay information on how easily the virus spreads without signs or symptoms. Your behavior and your risk profile is your responsibility, but I appreciate everyone who takes the information to help our community survive.

The “flu” doesn’t overwhelm the medical community and potentially require triage to deny patients ventilators. Without drastic action like this, more people will die than need to. The flu is more controllable because of vaccines. We don’t have the immunity to this we have with the flu.

And it’s called Coronavirus, not “China virus”.

Uh. right. I remember the Hong Kong flu, Rocky Mountain Fever, Lyme Disease and the oft-quoted Spanish Flu to name but a few. China and the PC crowd become easily offended if we were to say the "Wuhan Virus" which is actually accurate.

If you can't name something accurately, you really can't deal with it effectively. Just my opinion.

I don’t know why you say flu has killed 10 times more people. Not true! The new coronavirus causing COVID-19 has led to more than 454,000 illnesses and more than 20,550 deaths worldwide. For comparison, in the U.S. alone, the flu (also called influenza) has caused an estimated 38 million illnesses, 390,000 hospitalizations and 23,000 deaths this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

I would think that it is passed more by what you touch than by your proximity to another person but have never read this as a fact or otherwise. I find it very hard to wash 100% of the time after touching rails, handles, packages, mail boxes, ATM's, money, newspaper, mail, etc.
Being the independant and free folks that we are, we will never get a real lockdown to work (Marshall Law?) and so will we ever contain this virus until a Herd Immunity scenario has occured?
Locking off the Squares would seem very easy IF the powers-to-be had the guts to do it. I can see it now -- the "CDC Police Force".

Well, it's looking like the me-me-me Narcissists who don't follow rules are going to ruin everything for everyone else. No consideration for all the rest of us who REALLY don't want to catch an illness that could KILL us when it could have been avoided with diligence and common sense. The Villages will end up "winning" the Darwin Awards this year. Thinning the herd indeed. The sad thing is a lot of innocent good people are going to be taken down with them as this virus spreads like wild fire. Just saying.

A person with flu infects an average of 1.3 people, usually from close contact. A person with COVID 19 infects about 3 people and close contact is not necessary. Droplets, some too small to be seen, can hang in the air for quite awhile, and can survive on some surfaces for days. The average person touches his face 90 times per day. Wash your hands frequently. Keep your hands away from the T-zone (eyes, nose, mouth). Stay 6 feet away from other people. If you are in a confined space like a store and someone ahead of you coughs or sneezes, don't walk through that area. If you have to cough or sneeze, cover it as best you can with your arm or a tissue. People who are hoarding hand sanitizer and disinfectants are endangering themselves as well as the rest of us. A lot more of us would like to do our part to keep everyone safe, but we can't buy the things we need to do that. This is a very nasty virus. It targets and destroys the alveoli (air sacs) in your lungs leading to less oxygen in your blood which then leads to organ failure. It also causes increased permeability of vessels which means they begin to leak causing fluids to build up where you don't want fluids building up. Even people who recover from the virus can have lasting damage. Take this seriously. For people our ages, Russian Roulette with a six shot revolver would be safer than crowding a town square.

5 community spread cases in The Villages.

Thank you for posting that. Most telling was his statement that Sumter County, where The Villages is, has the state’s fourth-highest rate of confirmed infections, with 26 cases per 100,000 residents. Only Broward County [42 cases per 100,000 residents], Miami-Dade County [36,] and Monroe County [27] have higher rates of confirmed infections per capita.
Talk of the Villages doesn’t allow me to post the link to the article for reference. It was in Floridapolitics dot com /archives/325627-coronavirus-community-spread-the-villages

It so hard to understand why these people are oblivious to the on going Covert 19 Virus which is in the Villages and continues to spread everyday. The Surgeon General for the state of Florida yesterday issued an order stating that people who are 65+, and people with underlying health conditions must stay at home for the next two weeks. The people who are ignoring this order continue to put the rest of us in jeopardy. Because of the age group in the Villages we are very lightly to become the next hot spot of this epidemic due to their reckless behavior.

The testing being done is on the already symptomatic ONLY. Must have Fever, Must have Shortness of breath, to be tested.
Sounds a bit late to me.
What does this mean to the rest of us?
This means the infected and A symptomatic, or No symptoms persons are
infecting others and look and feel fine this month.

This should be very alarming to the Social gathering Naysayers of the Villages.

We should all call the Governors office and report this activity. Hopefully then, community watch will have the ability to disburse the crowded areas if he declares a "shelter in place" for our community and stop this as they way they closed the beaches. I can only think the majority of these folks crowding the squares and restaurants are seasonal renters not much concerned about spread in our community.

"Enforcement" complaints must go to the Sumter County DOH. Email: DLCHD60WebManager@flhealth.gov and phone: 352-569-3102. Unfortunately The Villages can't or won't do anything to prevent this situation (regarding the large gatherings at LSL and other squares every evening) even with the "stay at home" emergency text message that scared the daylights out of me on my cellphone the other day.

While I strongly agree with the emergency e-mail message from the Florida Surgeon General, the message was an advisory, not an order. However, it is very important that we all stay at home as much as possible and only go out for essential activities such as the grocery store or the pharmacy. Whenever we are out and about, we MUST practice good social distancing in order to finally get control of the coronavirus outbreak and minimize the spread of the virus.

FYI,

There is an old saying in finance, "Risk happens very fast!", and what you are witnessing is how the "low information" people and those wo have values about life and risk which are very different than yours, can create risk that happens very quickly. There is herd protection and herd risk. Distinguishing between the two is very situational, and being situationally aware can save lives.

In a prior life, I was an oil tanker captain, driving a gasoline or petrochemical bomb around. I have friends and acquaintances who are now no longer here because they didn't observe the proper situational risk. My college room lost his career because there was an accident which he missed a critical step, and someone was lost at sea. Luck plays a part, but you never want to rely on luck.

Better temporarily safe than permanently sorry.

Unfortunately, those two things aren't mutually exclusive. Rather the opposite, if by "live free" they mean ignoring the restrictions intended to keep us all safer.

For those who keep comparing this virus to seasonal flu, keep this in mind:

February 28th was the date of the first Coronavirus death in the United States. It took until March 25th to reach 1,000 deaths. So 26 days to get the first 1,000 deaths.

Yesterday, March 28th, total deaths went over 2,000. It took only three days to get the second 1,000 deaths. Think about that.

Today it's March 29th and there's an outside possibility we will get to 3,000 total deaths today. If that happens, it would be 26 days to get to 1,000, three more days to get to 2,000, and one more day to get to 3,000.

Everyone MUST take this thing seriously! Please?

No the Surgeon General for the state of Florida did not issue such an order. The office of the Surgeon General issued a WARNING - not an order - saying that people 65 or older SHOULD stay home. Should does not equal must.

There is a very significant difference.

Like the fellow who wrote for UPI, I'd too would like to clear up the spelling of what is killings us. The following comes from the World Health Organization:

Naming the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the virus that causes it
Official names have been announced for the virus responsible for COVID-19 (previously known as “2019 novel coronavirus”) and the disease it causes. The official names are:

Disease

coronavirus disease
(COVID-19)

Virus

severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2

Last I heard there was no risk driving by in an air conditioned car with the windows up.

We went to see if what we heard was really true...going for a ride from time to time. We are in the high (er) risk pool and do shelter stay at home. A short ride every day helps avoid cabin fever (some).

Most who show symptoms from the virus develop a fever or cough and may have trouble breathing, though they do recover.

Thanks for dissecting such a lame excuse of ‘journalism’. Google the AP writer’s story on the virus & The Villages that is now about a week old. It was worse! Same blabber about the ‘right-leaning’ Villagers! GOD help us!

One can have this virus from two to three weeks without symptoms all the time infecting others.

It can be spread by touch. The infected person touches the grocery cart handle then you touch it and now you are infected

It can be spread lots of other ways also it’s very contagious.

If you have the virus on your hands, you become infected if you touch your face (eyes, nose or mouth). Everything I have read and seen on TV, all the experts claim to keep your hands away from your face and you will not contract the virus in this manner.

Droplets in your eyes, nose or mouth is another mode of transmission for the virus. Not sure about airborne transmission; that is very scary if airborne actually is proven to be a mode of transmission.

The experts have not said for sure if the virus is airborne. In fact, I watched a video of a pulmonary doctor on the front lines in NYC. That video is posted on TOTV.
