View Full Version : Suggestion: TV Daily Sun Newspaper Should Be Distributed Free During the COVID-19 Pan
AnthonyW

The Villages Daily Sun (TVDS) newspaper should consider delivering it to every household in The Villages FOR FREE during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.
Alternatively, TVDS could at least consider putting the entire daily edition online and make it available to all residents for free during this pandemic.
There are many people in our community that do not subscribe to TVDS for various reasons. Thus, they are missing out on critical public health information. This endangers all the community. Thus, the powers-that-be at TVDS could provide a public service by providing online and/or physically delivered newspapers during the pandemic.
P.S. I am a paid TVDS subscriber.

this begs the question, What are you giving away free? like every other business the Sun has to make a profit to keep printing. for those who do not subscribe, you are missing out on very good local news. just because there are those who don't care or are too cheap to pay does not mean the news is free. why don't you ask a neighbor to let you read his/her paper when they are finished reading it.

Seriously? The Daily Sun is practically free as it is. The pandemic seems to have opened the floodgates for the entitlements. Let’s stick to making sure only absolute necessities are made available gratis, like testing and treatment.

I agree the Daily Sun is really really “Cheap”out of pocket cost. If you can’t afford the Sun, then you surely can’t afford to live in The Villages. I would wager if you call them today your paper would start tomorrow. :bigbow:

I suspended the Daily Sun recently because of this COVID19 going around. It's just like the mail, it carries the virus germs for over 24 hours. You do not know how many hands have been on that paper. No paper for me til this virus is over. Everything is online that I need right now to read. Use their app. Who wants to leave their paper in the driveway for 24 hours anyway.

I wouldn’t read that biased, ancient history if I found it on my driveway even if I wasn’t worried that it might be infected with COVID-19. If I did find the papers on my driveway, I’d have to disinfect them and then waste trash bags to hold them until trash day.
No, thank you. I’ll stick to the internet for news that is actually current.

The delivery person is a local self-employed contractor driving their own vehicle in the middle of night so you will have the paper in your driveway when you get up. That's who I'm more concerned about and you want it free so another person loses their job. The subscription fees go to that contractor, the newspaper makes their money from all the ads they sell.

I agree, plus there are plenty of other ways to receive covid-19 information. Most easily, watch the Orlando news stations for reports of cases county by county, and hear what the governor has to say on television.
Sign up for notices from The Villages offices and learn what is closed and what is open.

I agree...WHY? It us a total waste of paper. Last time we subscribed it was only 8 cents a copy. On line...could be considered a public service, but since there is nothing going on in TV, what are they writing about, anyway? District notifications via email seem to provide necessary updates.

Any written source of information is history . . . . . welcome to the 21st Century where news is instantaneously broadcast over the airways, via cable and through satellite.
Just another thought comes to mind, the too frequent use of vulgarity. Using this nasty word only as the example, the word “FREE” should be ban from social discourse. That word is a reminder of the suffering and enslavement it has caused countless others and is the gateway to losing freedom.

I think that all newspapers should be free. Let the advertising pay all of the costs.
Having said that, I would rather see all newspapers stop distribution as the coronavirus can stay on paper for a long time.
Why not just eliminate all of the costs of paper, ink and printing and just put them online free with ads?

Thank you for that reply. What do.people think when they make such comments. Obviously they were not thinking about the workers or the delivery person. When the Daily Sun is brought up, then we get some "underlying opinions" based on other philosophies and influences. Me and my household will continue to want the Daily Sun delivered. Because we agree with the underlying opinions espoused on certain pages of opinion.
Everyone picks up their mail don't they? Who knows where those hands have been....and those who pick up pizza and take out.
We are all tense and tired and bored and the house is beginning to look really lived in and our hair is growing down our neck and our kids are in another part of the world and this could go on for months and we are all depressed and grumpy. And we have to cut back on the chocolate and booze or we will destroy our own health...…..
Hugs to all. By damn we will get through this. I hope.

That’s very nice, here around Dallas/Ft. Worth TX. it still costing us (not me) $300.+ a yr. to get delivery 5 days a week, $500.+ for 7 days a week. I’m sure this is subsidized by the govt. but it still nice that TV is doing this. They’re to fricking cheap down here to do a nice thing like this.

While I don't agree with the OP's sentiment with regard to The Sun, many corporations, public utilities, etc. are making financial concessions to try to ease the burden on their customers and some are also giving directly to the community. Entertainment services, for example, are providing free access to some of their content, so I can see where the OP is coming from.
Posters here should be able to disagree without being overly dismissive, harsh, or rude.

Not that it has any value (except for maybe slicing it into 4" strips for other possible emergency uses) I agree, it's a for profit business, but that being said MANY businesses are SACRIFICING profits for others for a limited time but that paper really lacks ANY UPDATED and CURRENT valuable information as it is always a day+ behind in the "news" it prints.
