They've been doing it at our local Costco (Seattle Area) for over a month now.
They also have an area designated with disinfected carts. They only allow about 40 people in the store at a time. Five out, five in..
The cashier touches nothing if at all possible. Gun scan your card. Gun scan the items in your cart if possible. Customer rotates items to facilitate gun scanning. If the conveyor does get used it gets disinfected between customers. Even with only 40 customers in the store they still have 5 registers open.
A reader board outside displaying in/out of stock status on popular items. If it's out of stock no need standing in line outside.
Several employees directing the traffic flow and wiping things down. All wearing masks and gloves.
A lot of effort but worth it. I wish Home Depot and Lowes would come even close to such effort. Both of those places have been a zoo..

I was in Publix today and noticed the arrows....great idea. Now if we could only get some people to get with the program. Yes, it does make skipping aisles a little more challenging, but every little bit helps.

We "experienced" that for the first time today at Publix Colony. I can say we and many others unknowingly didn't follow them for a while because there was no notice posted, didn't hear any announcements or see any signs in the store. After our third aisle going the wrong way along with lots of others we noticed the thin little blue tape arrows on the floor after someone politely advised us. Generally we don't pay attention to the floor when we shop and they used very narrow blue tape so it wasn't very obvious as we weren't thinking about the floor but only getting my Spaghetti O's (out of stock of course). It's a great idea but they need some "standing up" signs to advise shoppers and then I think many more would have heeded them. Walmart is supposed to be doing it as well but as of yesterday was not and the same for Aldi per the news reports.

They also announce that they've put them there, every hour. Thanking the customers for respecting social distancing and sticking with the one-way aisle pattern.

If the customers don't notice FOUR signs on the wall when you come in that reads, in big bold colored letters: CLEAN CARTS OVER THERE >>>>>>>>>>>>>
then what makes you think they'll notice a sign standing up in front of an aisle warning them to go the other way?
Pro-tip: if you see someone washing down carts over "THERE" then try looking over "HERE" for the ones that are already clean.

True, but that shouldn't stop them for attempting to make it more obvious. We must have been there BETWEEN announcements or were too busy running down the aisles the wrong way singing "Oh Oh No Spaghetti O's" again and maybe didn't hear it. ;)

If they had security guards with AR-15s standing on the end of each aisle ordering y'all to comply with the arrows on the floor, SOME folks would just pretend they didn't hear the guards. Or they really don't hear them because they forgot to change their hearing aid battery that morning.

Publix is broadcasting a message of the new policy in the store, but people are NOT paying attention. I pass people going the wrong way and kindly mention the arrows on the floor. The cashiers are constantly reminding people to stay on the taped line. Eventually they will begin to notice (I hope).

So, explain to me how passing someone going in the same direction in the isle is that much safer than passing someone going in the opposite direction?!?!? In theory you should spend less time within their 6’ social distancing space if you pass them going the opposite way.

Right, like people going to follow the signs. People are still walking too close, golfing too close, waiting in line too close. Signs. Are suggestions, just like stops signs, yield signs, and speed limit signs. Always going to be precent that will NEVER follow signs.

I went to Publix a few days ago. Never noticed the arrows and when I was in line to check out, they made the announcement. All 3 people in line with me agreed we had no idea that it was one way and we all felt like a’holes for not complying. My beef is husbands and wives shopping together and clogging up the aisle. One of you please stay home! Thank god my husband hates shopping It would take me twice as long if he were with me!

Also wish people would not stand and look and look at items before deciding what to purchase. Have to wait for them to clear that area before I can grab what I came for,
My goal in food shopping now is get in and out as quickly as possible.

Amazing how often one sees people going the wrong way on a one way parking lot lane. Maybe they're the same people who leave their carts in the middle of the store aisle so NOBODY can get by either direction and those who walk in the middle of the parking aisles instead of off to one side. Clueless. SMH

I have not been in a Publix ,Sams or Walmart in 3 weeks. Each time I drove by one of these stores, the parking lot was full so I kept going. On one occasion I did see a Publix worker getting carts in the lot and I stopped him and asked if it was like this everyday. He said it is this busy every day and many of the people are the same every day. Even if they find the paper product they want one day they are back the next day looking for more.I think the only way to control the number of shoppers is to limit them by assigning Mondays to only persons with the last name begging with ABCor D. Tuesday with last name begging with EFGH and so on. This might stop some people from filling their garage with paper products that they don't need. Just my thiught.

Customers who come in with two adults AND a child. During a pandemic. This doesn't apply to most folks in the Villages but - here's a little life hack for the exceptions:
There is a really bad contagious sickness going around, and it could kill your 5-year-old daughter if she catches it. Your daughter doesn't need to decide which brand of boxed cereal she'll be eating. If you don't know by now what kind she likes, then just put her up for adoption and be done with it. You also don't need to consult with her on whether or not you'll be buying hotdogs this week. Just assume that you will, and buy them. Leave your kid at home. And if you can't, well your spouse/boyfriend/adult sibling is with you - that person and your daughter can sit in the car, with the adult behind the wheel, car running, AC on.
There is ZERO reason for two adults and one kid to be in a supermarket during this pandemic.
And if you're an Instacart driver, it means you're doing this multiple times EVERY SINGLE DAY. If your kid gets sick and dies, it'll be 100% entirely your fault. If you think you'll be okay with that, carry on. If not, stop it.

We get a handful or two of Instacart drivers. They come in every single day, because that's their job. They are "professional shoppers" for customers who cannot or will not go into the stores. They're doing a huge service for the community and risk their lives to do it (for a fee, of course).
The ones who come in with kids though - need to stop doing that.

I was at Publix this am and the directional arrows were announced over the store speaker. I really didn't notice them until I was finished. In the future I will heed to this BUT I did notice that quite a few of employees were not wearing masks. So I really don't see how walking in one direction is as important as employees wearing masks

I was in WalMart Sunday afternoon and traffic was fairly calm and sedate until this young father with four running and yelling kids came blasting through the store. Fortunately, I only had to cross paths with them once. Please, parents, leave your children with a responsible adult at home or outside somewhere.

Easy, don't pass. Wait until the person in front of you finds what they are looking for and then move forward behind them. Yes, it will take longer but if increasing risk to people in the store so you can get your stuff then maybe send someone else who understands the risk and has patience.

Yeah if I just put ice cream in my cart, I'm not going to stand there waiting for Madam Fussy to argue with her kids about whether or not they are getting frozen pizza for dinner that night. And that's just the first frozen aisle. Now I have to deal with waiting in the next aisle, for whoever and whoever else taking their sweet time reading ingredients of things they know they were planning on getting anyway, because no one else exists, and no one else is trying to just get through that aisle without contracting a potentially fatal disease.
By the time I get to checkout, the ice cream is melted and I don't want it anymore.
Suffice it to say - I haven't bought any ice cream since Kilwen's closed. I really miss ice cream.

Sorry about your SpaghettiOs, Ed! I was doing a happy dance today when, after being out of stock for weeks, I finally scored two of my favorite penne and sausage frozen dinner.
I was at Publix Southern Trace on Saturday and didn't notice the blue arrows until I'd been down a couple of aisles. As far as store policies go, I'm more appreciative of restricting the number of customers, installing plexi shields at checkout stands, and of employees who wear masks. Especially at the deli counter.
I wouldn't mind alternate shopping days like during the '79 oil crisis. Heck, maybe we're even heading back to the days of rationing coupons!

Alternate shopping days were a headache. But also the population of the country was only 225 million, and the big box stores hadn't been invented yet so there many more stores of smaller size, so the population was better able to spread out and not all be stuck in the same inside spaces.
Today, there are 331 million, big box stores are a thing which attracts millions of people to them - and there aren't as many ma and pa stores in existence to accommodate them all, should they become overfilled.

Gee but I’ve been grocery shopping forever and never bumped into anyone or experienced any sort of chaos. Where in the world do you shop? I wore a mask last week and hated every second of that. I do not wear gloves because I can wash my hands. Common sense has to take control and 1/2” tape on the floor is meaningless.

We are still to be social distancing and washing our hands frequently. Wearing masks in areas where social distancing is not as easy to maintain is just an added bonus. We are not to be slacking off on the guidelines which have been in place prior to the request that we wear face protection too.

In theory, but people are generally clueless. Then of course you get the couple just standing in the aisle blocking with their cart while they decide between the 1% and 2% milk.
Before someone says it, NO I AM NOT WAITING.
Yesterday at Sam's Club I went to get something from one of the refrigerators and a woman was just standing in front of talking on her cell phone. When I said "excuse me" her response was "I'll be done in a minute or two". My response of course was "unless you want me 4 inches from your face, you're done NOW. I'm sure the cell reception is just as good 6 feet further down the aisle"

I was in Publix and saw an arrow in the MIDDLE of the aisle, not on the entrance or exit. That really doesn't help the customer... I haven't been to any other Publix's in the area, just one that I normally won't go into due to 'poor service'

That was my response to a previous poster who wants it to be the same way. So for those that want to rush through and those that are willing to help each other trying to occupy the same space will create chaos....it has happened when hurricanes come here and really occurs when nor'easters hit the mid atlantic. They are "vendor filled" items so the store doesn't order by flavor, it up to the vendor rep guy filling the freezer what they get depending on what's on his truck at the time. PRO TIP: Best selection is the day or 2 BEFORE the BOGO starts. You pay more but get better selection :D :D :D :1rotfl:

Chaos & bumping into people? The stores are already limiting customers to a fraction of their rated capacity. Before limiting the number of shoppers, there wasn’t chaos. Directional isles only slow things down further, without any benefit. I don’t know about you, but I don’t really want to spend more time in the store than necessary. If you are that uncomfortable in a grocery store, just get someone to shop for you, or get your groceries delivered.

Publix isn't limiting the customer capacity. Some of the stores were already pretty busy during certain times of the day before the virus. Once the virus hit and people swarmed to get items they thought they'd need in case the country shut down, it was pretty chaotic in some of the aisles. Especially canned veggies and fruits, and the cereal and bread aisles.
We're supposed to try and maintain a 6' distance from each other. That's impossible to do if you have a cart on the other side of the aisle with a woman standing to the side of it in the middle of the aisle, checking products while another person is slightly ahead of you stopped to read labels, and you have to squeeze between the two to get past them to where you want to be. Soon as you do that you are now putting three different people in jeopardy. Now multiply that situation by 10, in each very long aisle, at the same time employees have their floats stacked with boxes of product that they have to unpack and put on the shelves.
If you limit it to one-way aisles, you reduce the number of people in the aisle at any given moment and provide some semblance of order during busy times. This reduces the risk of getting too close to the other people.
The concern isn't that they're bumping into each other - which happens. The concern is getting too close. You can't carry around a measuring tape and measure 6 feet to ensure no one is crossing the line. But you can estimate if you're barely an arms-length away from someone else.
One way traffic reduces that risk.

Yep, after showing quite a bit of "attitude". She was about 400#, so I didn't want to get sat on.
LOL :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl: I hate to tell you who she was on the phone with GE. I'll let you guess. :ohdear:
I saw a young lady in he mid 30's coming out of Publix today with 4 children between 8 & 12. No Mask's, No Gloves probably no responsible adult at home to leave them with. Who knows? This woman was stressed out. I try not to judge. I understand and agree with leaving the extra tonnage at home. Let us not forget some people have no choice to do the things the do.
I have given up totally on going inside anywhere to buy anything. The Pick up stores are Walmart, Publix, Sam's and the mail it to me joints are Amazon & Boxed and Boll & Branch! :boxing2: The people who bring our orders out are stressed and many of them choose to not wear a mask. They are the nicest people and I don't rag on them about their choices cause they are over the age of 3 times 7 but I do make them stand back while we're talking because their problem isn't gonna become mine. The Publix Pharmacy even will bring out your prescriptions if you pay for the order when they notify you it's ready.
I try not to put myself in a spot where any social distancing mistake can be made but if it looks like its gonna happen I'm not gonna let it happen. Case :boxing2: Closed!

So, explain to me how passing someone going in the same direction in the isle is that much safer than passing someone going in the opposite direction?!?!? In theory you should spend less time within their 6’ social distancing space if you pass them going the opposite way.
You cannot keep 6 feet of separation if you are passing someone. You must stop and follow the person in front of you just like you are in a line. If you pass the person in front of you, you are a line jumper.

First of all, you don't have to pass people going in the same direction. You can simply wait until they move. But it will reduce the number of people that are in a hurry and decide to pass within six feet.
Nothing is perfect and not everyone is going to obey. But if we can reduce the amount of close contact it will be better.
I still have met people telling me that this is no big deal and that nothing should be closed. Fortunately, they are few and far between. I believe that the reason that this virus hasn't spread like wild fire in The Villages is that, because so many of us are in very high risk categories that the vast, vast majority are following the social distancing rule and other recommended procedures.

Nonsense. Do you not pass the car doing 20 on a 45 road? I’m not standing behind some label reader when I want to get in and out as quickly as possible.
So you think it is proper to cut in front of the person in line in front of you. A one way aisle is not a highway, it's the same as in the check out line or a line at a movie theater. It's far better to wait 6' back than to pass within 6" of another person, give them space.

Publix is doing it but a lot of people are not fooling the arrows. If a worker sees someone going in the wrong direction they should stop and explain the new way of navigating the store.QUsOTE=Rapscallion St Croix;1745714]One-way aisles to facilitate social distancing. Sorry, I don't agree with this. I'm not going to wait "in line" for a person ahead of me to stand in the aisle reading labels. It's just not going to happen. I hold my breath as I wear my mask and break out of "the line" and move on my way as quickly as it is to be safe.

Nope, I'm not going to wait for someone who is reading labels and undecided about what to buy. Hold my breath until I get past them. I'm not cutting a line. Be real!

Totally and completely IDIOTIC
It is not a line like check out or a movie, it's more like the cart lane on the side of the road. If you come up on cyclist going 3 mph, are you supposed to "wait for him"? If 2 pedestrians are in the middle of the cart lane having a conversation are you supposed to stop and wait for them to be done?
Scratch that idiotic label---more like MORONIC

I pass the person doing 20 on a 40 MPH road and I’ll be passing the couple reading labels on every box of cereal. I want in and out. Food shopping is not an excursion.

The aisles are more than wide enough to pass. I’m not making a day of it getting groceries. I would never cut the check out line but I’m not waiting while mr. and mrs. label reader analyze every type of Cheerios.

This would only work well at military commissaries. They know how to follow orders!

We are civilians. We are not under martial law. The one way designation is a suggestion. No one orders me around in a supermarket
