All I can say, you missed a lot of funny stuff. I remember the very first episode. It was February 1982 and I had flown to Dallas to pick up a car, and was spending the night at my brother-in-laws. It kind of late, we flipped on the TV and here was this show, Late Night with David Letterman.
I had watched Johnny Carson for years, this show his first guest was Bill Murray. He came and at the time, Let's get Physical was a big hit by Olivia Newton John. Bill Murray got up and did the funniest take off of that song, that it's still shown on highlights.
When I got back home, I started watching it every night. It was almost like watching Saturday Night Live 5 nights a week. That was so many great skits over the year. There was Larry 'Bud' Melman, then Chris Elliott came out as anybody from Marlon Brando to the Bounty Hunter. The bands, some really great new bands have gone onto be well know, such as Kings of Leon, Alabama Shakes, Pearl Jam, etc. I've got a music folder on youtube with 84 performances from the show.
All I can say is, I've probably seen as many episodes of David Letterman as would be possible without working on the show. The odd thing is, his replacement Stephen Colbert I have not seen one time, and probably never will.
Music performances on youtube from Late Night.
