So the “regular” flu in 1980 killed 80,000 Americans according to the CDC. And this is with 45% of the adult population having been vaccinated. So conservatively 50 million people vaccinated.
Did we shut down the country and destroy millions of people’s lives?
Nope.
With Coronavirus we have ZERO people vaccinated, and so far about 34,000 deaths, which the CDC is trying to inflate by counting people who die at home. If we apply that same logic to the 2018 flu deaths then you would be over 100,000 deaths from the “regular “ flu.
So it looks like we need to shut down the country every year, for at least 2 months, until we are all living in huts, or tents if you’re a camper.

The difference is there was a vaccine in 1980. There is none yet so without the extreme measures in place the death toll would likely (per medical experts) be in the millions while waiting for a CV vaccine. It’s a tough decision but how do you balance an extreme number of deaths to minimize the economic fallout when it has never been done before? They are trying. It’s easy to arm chair quarterback the first half of the game at halftime.

I would ask for clarification of the original post. Does Laker stand by his statement that in 1980 or 2018 there were 80,000 flu deaths and we had a 45% vaccination coverage? If 2018, is 45% of adults in the US about 50 million?
So the “regular” flu in 1980 killed 80,000 Americans according to the CDC. And this is with 45% of the adult population having been vaccinated. So conservatively 50 million people vaccinated.
Does Laker claim the CDC is inflating COVID deaths by including deaths where doctors and coroners did not list COVID as one of the factors in the death?
the CDC is trying to inflate [corona deaths] by counting people who die at home.
Does Laker claim that the CDC only included as a flu death one with a positive influenza test and where the death certificate listed Influenza as the primary cause of death?
If we apply that same logic to the 2018 flu deaths then you would be over 100,000 deaths from the “regular “ flu.

"CDC officials do not have exact counts of how many people die from flu each year. Flu is so common that not all flu cases are reported, and flu is not always listed on death certificates. So the CDC uses statistical models, which are periodically revised, to make estimates."
So maybe your Flu death rate is inflated too...

Don't confuse him with facts. Do note from your citation that the CDC estimates deaths from flu using a statistical model. It does NOT give a flu death rate based on the primary cause of death listed on a death certificate, nor whether influenza is even mentioned on a death certificate. It does not discard deaths at home and only use hospital deaths as its number. The CDC has a fairly strong network of reporting sites to give an estimate of how prevalent influenza is in a community. Part of the modeling is to see how much excess death occurs at the same time as influenza peaks. It is complex and is revised up to 2 years after the flu season as more data is received.
Any attempt to compare the methodology of estimating influenza related deaths (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/2017-2018.htm) to COVID related deaths needs to be based on looking at the differing methods being used. Nobody is hiding anything. All the models and data are available. Finding that information, learning about the subject, critical thinking, math, may be required to begin to understand the material. It is complex and I accept that some may not have been offered the opportunity to develop skills in those arenas. They are still fully entitled to express thoughts on the topics of the day, even complex issues.

Covid19 is much more infectious than flu so a different approach involving social distancing was needed. But we need to find a better way to fight such viruses rather than shutting down the economy. This will involve research and bringing our supply chains back to America as Trump has been doing since elected. Also, WHO has to be restructured as it is a China puppet now.

I think your analysis is a little off. Almost every expert acknowledges that the deaths are well understated for Covid. The deaths recorded include only those tested and not any of the thousands that die at home without being tested. The numbers also do not include many nursing home deaths (yet) as they are so swamped they have not completed the paperwork yet.
Covid-19 vs. Flu
To clear up some of the confusion regarding annual flu deaths vs. Covid-19 deaths, here are some stats from the CDC.
Last year, the CDC had 34,200 deaths reported and attributed to the flu...that’s over a year but predominately during the defined flu season (Oct-May).
So far there have been 40,475 Covid-19 deaths since March....in just over a 6 weeks. On March 25th there were 1035 deaths reported.
39,000 people have died in less than 4 weeks! That’s 5000 more than last year's entire flu season.
Average Weekly Deaths:
Flu: 1005
Covid-19: 6745
Total Confirmed Cases:
Flu: 35.5 million
Covid-19: 760,000 (obviously way understated)
Death Rate:
Flu: .1%
Covid-19: 5.3% (way overstated based on lack of tests)
Let's hope the total Covid-19 deaths top out at no more than the 60,000 forecasted. You can do the math, Covid-19 is nothing like the flu.

I have seen ranges of deaths from the ordinary flu ranging from 24,000 to 80,000 per flu season. The models used for corona virus originally came in at about 100,000 to 240,000 deaths. How can anyone trust any of these models? They cannot be used because they really do not know.

And, 1 year earlier, it was 61,000 - 2017-2018. Keep in mind, getting a flu shot does not mean you will not get the flu, since they swag which flu will be active and have a 50% accuracy rate as to which flu will appear. The 61,000 figure was with vaccinations and 45,000,000 still contracted the flu. The numbers being bandied about now are pretty much useless and create undue panic. The "experts" have no clue as to the total number infected, how many survived and how many are now immune. The lack of testing has crippled the models as is being shown now by large drops in mortality rates as the numbers are updated. The snarky comments seen on this site are not taking into account those out without masks may very well have been survivors and are not capable of transmitting the virus. Acquiring masks is difficult at this time, even for front line health workers. Keep your distance and practice good sanitary procedures when you come home from shopping.

The media didn’t gin up the fear and panic as much as now. That’s not to say that this shouldn’t be taken seriously. As I’ve mentioned on other threads, the Wuhan virus is deadly serious for approximately 4% of those who contract. There’s an added level of anxiety since we have no vaccine, but the fact still remains that approximately 96% of cases are classified as “mild”, and 98% of cases recover.
I look very skeptically at conspiracy theories, but I can’t help but think that there is a lot we aren’t being told and that sinister political posturing games are being played by everyone involved.

Are numbers of deaths still rising? I keep hearing the curve is flattening, including NYC. As for the increase in numbers of cases, that is a given with more and more testing being done. There are many asymptomatic cases out there that we don't even know about. More testing = more positive results, including those who are asymptomatic.

Hi all.. I'm just going to relay a phone conversation we had this morning with someone who lives in NYC and both of them had Covid... they are recovered, however, I don't think we are hearing the real stories like they are hearing in NY City.. Many of their friends have had it and one 39 year old friend was in a coma for 3 weeks.. and now is coming out of it.. his body has atrophied so bad that he still can't text and is still in the hospital.. another friend, because his organs were shutting down had his leg amputated.. and this disease is really affecting the liver and they are now short on dialysis machines.. these are all young healthy people.. NO PRE EXISTING CONDITIONS..
No one is immune to this.. I know it's hard, but we've put all this time in so far.. why blow it now by trying to get out there in the public. Some one put it the best this way.. If you were offered a bowl of skittles and they told you 2 of them in the 100 would kill you.. would you even try one!!!
This Covid is REAL PEOPLE.. We may not be hearing all the stories which may change your mind about it.. BUT I JUST DID!!!!! Gov. Coumo stated the the highest concentration of pos covid is not in NYC, it is in a small rural town mid NY state.. So you don't need a mass of people close together.. all it takes is the virus to plant hold.. YOU NEED TO KNOW.. I WANT THIS OVER AS MUCH AS YOU DO.. As a small Business.. I am paying huge rent, and can not be open.. it's not just keeping my home abreast.. I have a store front that I'm paying rent for with utilities..and I CANNOT BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.. it's taking a toll..PEOPLE LISTEN..stop making this political... these are our lives, our parents lives, our children..,PAY ATTENTION.. You are looking at the facts in a way that will fit the point you want to make, not all the facts. There IS NO vaccine yet for this virus. It is far more infectious than the flu, and the death rate of those infected (4.6% in the US) eclipses the fraction of a percent death rate of the flu. Yes, that’s because we have a vaccine for the flu each year, so what? The experts have said if this thing runs wild millions would die, not 100,000. This comparison to the flu is getting really old and has been proved false over and over.

Amen Brother, this is a good example of the media hype that can create fear and panic. This is a mutation of the "SARS" flu which occurred a few years ago. One might become a conspiracy buff if this type of planning keeps up. I wonder why dying from corona virus is different then dying from the common flu or even the H1 N1 which was thought to be viralent a few years ago. Dead is dead, but the reaction to this pandemic seems to be over the top.

You are right that our number of deaths is low, but what would they have been without social distancing, face masks, expanded medical responses, etc.? The number of deaths could have easily exceeded those flu numbers. Look at Italy, France, China, even Japan. We need to get businesses open as soon as it is safely possible, and everyone wants to get back to normal activities. If we could get our federal government to procure the number and types of testing necessary, we could start returning to normal almost immediately. To ask 50 governors to individually deal with Chinese and European suppliers for tests and testing supplies is absurd. They are bidding against each other and against other countries. The federal government needs to provide what is required for testing. If the political parties would quit worrying about the next election, and start doing their job, we would all get back to normal sooner.

There is a reason the word “sheeple” was invented...
Don't forget two BIG factors in flu deaths/cases: deaths of minors are the only classification required to be reported - deaths of majors are not. The "number of deaths" is estimated by the CDC and results from models. The number of deaths is a fantasy derived from recording ILI (Influenza Like Illnesses), a blanket term that the CDC uses often in their reporting - check it all out at the CDC's web site. At any rate, you've "cracked the code" but, trust me, you'll not open any eyes on this board that aren't already open. If you're not toeing the party line, you're in the camp of the enemy and must be silenced. I do love the term sheeple :)

So the “regular” flu in 1980 killed 80,000 Americans according to the CDC. And this is with 45% of the adult population having been vaccinated. So conservatively 50 million people vaccinated.

The number of deaths is now 46,500. You fail to mention this happened in about 7 weeks. Also that the curve was going up parabolic until the social distancing and the Draconian measures of economy shut down were put in place. Nobody likes the shut down but don't kid yourself. This had the potential to kill many many more had steps not been taken. Sheeple could be folks following bad information without thinking.

Why would we not include people who die at home. They still died! How can you apply the same stats to the regular flu when 45% of the people got the vaccine. That vaccine probably kept many of them safe, no vaccine will not.

The death rate is only 1.2-1.4% Of those testing positive.
We are destroying our country needlessly. Bury the dead, treat the sick, and let everyone else go back to work

Different, people are dying in shorter time frame.

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how many times your argument is pointed out; some people will just ignore it. Some people ignore any facts that are inconvenient to their opinion.

Slight correction. Many deaths are being counted as Covid-19 deaths on a presumption not testing. A person could die as a result of a heart attack and be classified as a Covid-19 death.

China, Russia and others are taking notes. Every single comment made on Social Media about how fearful people have become and how easy it was to manipulate an entire population is being recorded somewhere. It is their new secret weapon since they realize they cannot conquer us militarily any longer. Easier to destroy us from within with a few graphs and models no one even questioned but have now been proven to be horribly wrong. Encouraging Americans to report each other Commie Style to the “authorities” who have illegally defied the Constitution while shutting down the Court system so there is no immediate redress or due process available and then letting real convicted criminals out of jail. How gullible we have become! While we are self absorbed and fearfully occupieod with the virus they are laughing because we still do not see the real weapon.

If you still believe this, despite all the information about the severity of the effects of this virus as compared to the seasonal flu, please read post #42 in this thread. Even though CarrieOn is referring to survivors of COVID-19, it should give you a little insight into the differences. There is also much, much more data about the permanent physical damage done, average time spent in ICU and/or on a ventilator, cost of care, etc. Maybe you could have self-educated a little more prior to your post.

Yeah, they could, IF they met the criteria for a 'probable' COVID-19 death. See one explanation here:

I don't understand. The people of China were first to battle Covid-19 and the people of Russia are probably as much in the throes of it as we are. This is a VIRUS. As Orange Blossom Baby so aptly described it...When you die of it, you drown in your own body fluids. We don't have a vaccine, nor as yet a treatment that has been proven to help.
I don't understand that you cannot see how dangerous it is. Especially to all people who live here in The Villages. EVERYONE agrees that those over 65 are much more in danger.
I see the real danger here. There is a deadly virus with no cure and people are making it political. Every person I know is very aware of the awful economic disaster this situation has made. THAT is going to get far worse.
There is no one to BLAME. It is a virus that not one soul on the face of the earth had encountered before. It IS awful and it IS scary and no one should take it lightly. It least affects children (it appears) and it seems to affect people of black and brown races worse than Caucasions. That is not racist or mean. That is the way it looks now.
I don't want to see anyone die who can do anything they can to prevent it. I don't think our deaths are predestined. I don't think we need to get out and mingle if we are Villager age.
I don't think of it as a WEAPON and I don't think it is HYPE.

The article that references 80k flu related deaths in 1980 was an estimate by an individual at the time the article was written. There is another article online that references 52k flu related deaths for the same year. The number of reported flu related deaths in 1980 were lower than 80k (check the CDC). The number of actual flu deaths in any given year is unknown (death certificates don’t always identify the underlying cause of a death). Which is why the CDC utilizes modeling to estimate a death range for the flu in any given year.
That is why the mortality rate, versus actual deaths, is important when considering a threat. 9 people dying from a virus might sound insignificant. However, that same number is much more significant if only 10 people were exposed to a virus in an isolated environment and 9 people died (90% mortality rate).
The mortality rate for the flu is roughly .1% in any given year. The mortality rate for COVID 19 in the US (with one of the best healthcare systems in the world) is roughly 5%. COVID 19 has a mortality rate 50 times greater than the flu. And the hospitalization rate for COVID 19 versus the flu is even worse.
The worst version of Small Pox has a mortality rate of 30%. So Small Pox is 6 times deadlier than COVID 19, and COVID 19 is 50 time deadlier than the flu. Another similarity for COVID 19 versus Small Pox is that we no longer has a stock pile of Small Pox vaccine, and we have no vaccine for COVID. So why not compare COVID 19 to Small Pox (both are viruses)?
Because the only people who compare COVID 19 to the flu are ignorant people (and Fox News) trying to downplay the issue. There have been days that the death toll in the US from COVID 19 has exceeded 2k people. However, no intelligent people are arguing that 730k people will die from the virus this year.
There were roughly 15 cases of COVID 19 identified in the US in early February (Trump referenced this number with the statement that all were recovering and there would soon be zero cases). There are currently roughly 819k cases in the US with roughly 45k deaths. Less than 3 months later! Those numbers occurred with unprecedented restrictions put in place to help control the spread.
Maybe at some point when the final number of cases are known, the mortality rate will be lower. And at that time, the ignorant people who today compare this to the flu can say they told us so. I hope they can because the alternative sucks. Until then, people can argue that the US over reacted without making ill informed comparisons. I suspect most will probably still sound like idiots though.
