View Full Version : What businesses do you think could/should open that would have low/minimal risk?

Not a scientific study....no claims/claimers.
Just curious about opinions.
Using super markets as a guide or example there should be several retail businesses that could use reduced numbers of people in the store.
This of course assumes a relaxing of the stay at home order and "essentials" only.
Continuing adhering to social distancing and wearing masks.
Subscribing to the premise some revenues may be better than no revenues
Just opinions and what some would like to see.

Barber shops and beauty salons with minimal barbers and stylists (to keep social distance between chairs), masks all around, gloves, etc., and appointment ONLY to minimize waiting in lobby. I would expect there are other similar businesses that could open in this manner. Also, due to the pent up demand they could have extended hours.
Just my off the wall thoughts.

I don’t know, VT, those are really in your face professions where they lean over one and work. I could really use those services now but it’s not worth the consequences for me even with a mask..

From a purely selfish view point I would really like a pedicure, not the polish and all that, but just please cut my toe nails for me. My husband thinks I am crazy to even think of taking the risk. I would probably have to go with a full face mask and wearing a garbage bag before he would let me out the house. :):):)
Actually my regular nail tech always did my pedi wearing a face mask and gloves.

A few things:
Pickleball, bocci, archery, and tennis courts, with scheduled time only - if you're not assigned a time, and you're not one of the actual players, you can't play or attend to watch. No tournaments. Using ONLY your own equipment - the Villages equipment would still be locked away, at least for now. - for transparency purposes: I'm a member of the Archery club. I would still not be able to use the range, because I don't own my own equipment. Under the circumstances, I'm okay with that. Perhaps the clubs would consider extending our yearly membership another couple of months. That'd be great but not something I'd expect.
The pools - all of them. Under very strict conditions: chairs 6-8 feet apart, anyone caught trying to move them closer is asked to leave. If you want to just stand there and soak and yap with each other in the water, that's fine - 6 feet apart. If you try getting closer, you will be asked to leave. Jacuzzis - closed until further notice. If you congregate within the pool area closer than 6 feet apart, you will be asked to leave.
ALL of the above: resident IDs only (including tenants with resident IDs) and authorized care-takers of disabled residents. No visitors.
Rec centers could be made available for clubs that have few enough people in it, that even if EVERYONE in the club showed up, they would still be 6 feet apart in the meeting room. Again - no visitors, no one who isn't a club member allowed - no "new member recruitment lunches."
No one gets a second chance, no exceptions.

My concern about the pools is that what you suggest would require full time monitoring, i.e., an employee stationed at every pool all the time it is open. My experience in this type of situation is that less than that would mean a roving monitor who would stop by, warn people they were too close, perhaps move the seating back to proper distances, then leave. Whereupon, everything would revert back to the way it was. People told to leave for violating the restrictions would simply go out, wait for the monitor to leave, then return. If they are confronted by other pool users, then we have a potential for real conflict.
I hope I'm wrong about the ability of the residents to handle a step by step reopening, but reading comments about golf, pickleball, and other activities on TOTV doesn't fill me with confidence.

I predict that by May 1st the Villages will take a cautious approach to getting back to normal.
Also by July 1st all restrictions will be lifted and America will get back to normal.
Just have to wait it out and before you know it the nightmare will be history. :)

Remove the chair and benches. Go there there to exercise and leave, not lay around or bobbing.

Hair dressers and barbers stand behind you. Hairdressers tend to wear gloves much of the time anyway. And there is a lot of washing hands. So I think hair salons will be one of the first to open as it is straight forward how to set up social distancing.
Retail stores like Bealls might be able to open, but dressing rooms would be closed and they would limit the amount of people to allow social distancing.
Gyms and outdoor activities with your own equipment and sport pools with social distancing.
For sport pools they might have to store the pool lounge chairs for a bit, so people don’t congregate on those. Right now they count people going in for water Zumba classes and water volleyball, and they might want to lower the number they let in. For volleyball they might want to play 4 on 4 rather than 6 on 6. (And if they do that they might want to have split sessions, one hour each, as 4 on 4 can be pretty tiring.)
Courts would have to be reserved so there are no lines.
Indoor activities they could limit. They do count for aerobic classes, so they could limit the number smaller. Have activity clubs like pottery limit themselves so there is enough room not to be near each other. Social dancing might be verboten for now.
Restaurants that could operate with half the tables spread 6 feet apart could open. Perhaps they will be required to be reservation only.
Live entertainment on the squares could start with jazz trios or other listening type music. I don’t think the mosh pit dancing is coming for awhile. Perhaps they could have line dancing at one square, ensuring everyone is 6 feet apart.
However, before they do any of this I’d like to see our active cases in the Villages to be very small, like single digits. Though we have had over 70 cases in the Villages, I’m sure some of them have recovered, but I don’t know how many.

Scheduling not going to work, no staff to support it. No reason small groups can’t play with precautions. Especially singles. Or using the warmup back boards. IMO courts with backboards should of not been locked out. No different than golf range. Another thing it will take month or more to get all the nets and net cranks up and working.

Tennis courts are pretty much always scheduled. No staff needed, schedules are posted on the bulletin board outside the courts.
There are backboards! Learn something new everyday.

Mostly till 11 AM.
Scheduled play have too many in groups with virus going around, that’s why the closed glenview and tennis courts.
Now. if you’re talking about you call you’re buddy and schedule time to play that’s different. Most 4 court tennis court and few two courts tennis courts at rec centers have warmup backboards. Look around on you’re way to and from glenview in you’re scheduled group at rec centers where majority of tennis played.

It would absolutely require an actual monitor stationed at the pools. It would mean re-training some employees who are in other low-paying positions that are currently closed because of the virus - and giving them back a job. There are hundreds of Villages employees out of work right now. I'd love to see some of them return to work - but doing jobs that are needed during this crisis. Like pool monitors at every pool. They could take 4-5 hour shifts, and the pools could have somewhat reduced hours. Mornings are usually the coolest time of day, and mid-late afternoon hours are usually the hottest. So maybe the pools wouldn't open until 10AM, and close at 6pm. Gives everyone a chance to cool off and be in the presence of other human beings, without forcing a crowding situation. And gives jobs back to some of the low-wage workers who otherwise would currently be unemployed.

I agree re: barbers, stylists and nail techs. Others have stated how this could be managed. My opinion on nail techs is that it's a necessary service for the aging population. Oh, I know some will jump on me for this. They wouldn't have to polish but do the other things. Pedicures for some people is a necessary thing for health. Making sure there isn't cracks in the heals, doing the nail trimming properly etc. Along with many, I could use a hair-cut as well. Maybe these are 1st world issues but nonetheless would like to see these businesses back to work (which is a necessity to the economy).
I would most definitely be wearing my mask and gloves. I don't get manicures!!

From what I have seen, most of us seem to know what to do to lessen our risk of infection. If we can go to a grocery, why not a boutique, clothing or furniture store? If your barber/stylist is wearing a mask and working by appointment, that should be reasonably safe. Restaurants could reopen with fewer tables inside, dining outdoors is pretty safe. Outdoor activities should resume, and a spray disinfectant should be made available for the equipment (I know of a concentrate that makes 106 gallons for $80). No large gatherings in meeting rooms yet, but indoor activities where social distancing can be maintained could restart. We could even resume entertainment on the squares by blocking off the street surrounding the square so seating could be spaced further apart.

All these businesses that are mentioned in some replies, have offered how to open. My question is WHO decides which Barber or Stylist gets to work? The word limited means some are still out of jobs. It also looks to me that opening would suit us and not the associates. Especially Barbers and Stylist. What if ur stylist is not the one chosen are u willing to go to just anyone? Stylists were gloves while doing color, good luck with that as there has been such a run on gloves. What makes anyone think they can procure them. Pedicurist on the other hand work farthest away from U and are obviously not in ur face.

I'm looking forward to when restaurants can reopen with normal or near-normal operations. It's not that we actually go out a lot, but the variety was really nice. I also worry that the owners & staff at some of the smaller places will be able to make it much longer.

Year's ago I went to Big Bob's Barber shop on 27/441, " One Time " that was enough for me. What they should do on arrival give you a bowl with a number on it.
It reminded me of the times out of desperation I had to use the base barber shop.

I think all that contact is asking for trouble. I don't care if Attilla the Hun is standing guard and monitoring and suggesting. I remember vividly in the fifties being warned as a child not to go swimming in public pools because of polio and they had old fashioned chlorine back than. Another thing....Orange Blossom Baby....just like everything else that is only a "little" job or a job that wasn't there before....those are the things that inch up and cause everybody MORE expense. One of the things I like about the Villages is that it is affordable for most people. Another thing I like is that the developers do EVERYTHING they can to NEVER be in a position where they direct or order people around.

Tongue in Cheek???? As for "at risk" residents. When I had to go out to get milk this morning I was very surprised at the number of elderly women, yes women, on walkers and walking sticks not wearing a mask. I'm going to assume, rightly or wrongly, that if you are on a walker or a walking stick you have a risk.

I for one don’t use any hair shops, or nail salons here.
No matter what opens here and when, and Your opinion is different, that everyone should still stay home, it’s still your option to decide what is best for you, and no one else. If you survived the grocery, (I shop online) most likely anything that is opened here will be the same risk, maybe less.

Pickleball, bocci, archery, and tennis courts, with scheduled time only - if you're not assigned a time, and you're not one of the actual players, you can't play or attend to watch. No tournaments.
Most pools have no attendants to monitor the actions that you ban and to expect attendants to be pool cops is not reasonable. Rec centers would have the same requirement to have rec cops to insure people are 6 ft apart. Who makes the decision of size?
And then you have the question of available help that you mentioned with the issue of longer hours on golf courses. Added people to do the control you request, training , etc when the Villages Personnel dept is limited at this time.

Too hard to police. People that abuse are not going to listen to a recreation employee nor should they be put in that position. Come up with rules and if if a certain pool or recreation activity area was being abused close that one down for a couple weeks. Unfair to those that don't abuse but enforcement by Village employees is not feasible.

Are you all talking about Big Al's?
Yes sorry. Big Al’s. I LOVE Big Bobs and would recommend going there in the future. Just looked at Big Al’s add again and it says for ladies to come and check out the salon next door. Just curious that he’s advertising to open and who’s giving the go ahead. Just curious

I believe he is hoping that the lockdown will not be extended beyond April 30th.
So he went ahead and is taking chance, I think the lockdown will end very soon.
By the way FYI " Big Al " sold out years ago and is under a new owner whoever that is.
Probably a person who use to cut hair at Military Bases. :)

I'd be more accepting of outdoor activities if people adhere to distancing recommendations.
Restaurants remain problematic to me since servers still need to bring food to the table and typically handle 5-6 tables per hour. (And even in the best of times, buffets are full of potential food land mines.) Is recirculated air in indoor environments a concern at all?
Temperature-taking for any activity or restaurant would only identity/disallow staff and customers who are actively sick, but asymptomatic people might still be contagious.
None of it is a straightforward or easy decision.

Stylists cut from the front, side and back of a clients head and stand over the client while the client is sitting in a chair. Unless one has one small patch of hair on the back of ones head.

I'm not talking about adding jobs. I'm talking about replacing one set of work hours with the same set of work hours at a different set of responsibilities. There are already existing employees whose jobs are on pause, because they normally would be working part time at the rec centers, which are currently closed. Those particular employees could be offered the SAME hours - at the neighborhood pools. No one would be paying them more, there would be no added expense OTHER than a day or two for training in the specific tasks.
Also - I'm not in favor of restaurants re-opening their dining rooms, and here's why: we're not ready for it, our community has proven itself not capable of accepting the responsibility. All it takes is one single sneeze in an enclosed area, while people are congregating, and the waitress is walking past the table at that moment...
which is, more or less, what happened to me today. A customer was wearing her mask. She took it OFF to sneeze into the air, facing me, while other customers were walking into the store, between myself and this unmasked sneezer.
And then she pulled the mask back up over her face.
All it takes is ONE to ruin it for everyone. That one is already around. I don't need to see any more proof that this community isn't ready yet.

The OP is looking for ideas about which BUSINESSES could be opened during the phased reopening. While the posts relating to Villages activities are informative, please direct responses to business types that could reopen and restore jobs to those that have lost them due to the restrictions.
Thanks

Not a scientific study....no claims/claimers.
Just curious about opinions.
Using super markets as a guide or example there should be several retail businesses that could use reduced numbers of people in the store.
This of course assumes a relaxing of the stay at home order and "essentials" only.
Continuing adhering to social distancing and wearing masks.
Subscribing to the premise some revenues may be better than no revenues
Just opinions and what some would like to see.

Males easily 75% judging by the " Celebrities " to include in particular Sport Stars.
They are covered from neck to toe with whatever statement they are trying to make, which basically no one cares about.
I do notice that criminals both M/F have an abundance of statement , messages tattoos that they want to get across. Usually marked with anger.
Females on the other hand are IMO are led by insecurity, not feeling good about themselves, or just angry. Small % just a curiosity in that 25%.
Males 75% easily, and Females 25%

Barber shops and beauty salons with minimal barbers and stylists (to keep social distance between chairs), masks all around, gloves, etc., and appointment ONLY to minimize waiting in lobby. I would expect there are other similar businesses that could open in this manner. Also, due to the pent up demand they could have extended hours.
Just my off the wall thoughts.
