Why is it that political signs have been banned from front yards yet people apparently are able to fly political flags, which are much bigger than a yard sign, from their flagpoles in their front yards???

I never understood people that say that an American flag is a political symbol.

Signs and flags are two different things with regard to the laws and rules. The display of flags is addressed by Florida law. Here is a link to the law.

Statutes & Constitution :View Statutes: Online Sunshine (http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0700-0799/0720/Sections/0720.304.html)

I don't think that flags are addressed in The Villages restrictions and covenants because the State law gives homeowners certain rights that cannot be superseded by a covenant.

Flag Etiquette:

Section 8i of the American flag code:

Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

In yards throughout TV, there is a specific flag flying on the same pole as the American flag. That flag is clearly political advertising. (And we all know what flag I am talking about.)

Not only is such a political flag obvious advertising, it is, in reality, actually disrespectful to everything our American flag stands for. (Think about that. Really, think about that. Think about the pledge, “One Nation...” ”Indivisible...”)

If you must “advertise” on a pole, get a separate pole and make sure the other flag does not fly as high as the American flag.

And don’t get me started on the battered, tattered American flags I have seen on my walks in TV.

Sincerely,
Betsy Ross Boomer

Flags with the name of a person running for office or already in office. Saw one yesterday and was appalled, it was as large as the US flag.

In a society that is so polarized a political flag of either party effects the property owner next door to some degree . If he decides to sell his home there are some people who will not buy it because of the political affiliation of the neighbor, it’s sad but reality these days . I still wonder why people can’t follow the rules, makes life easier for everyone

I agree. But, the law doesn't seen to prohibit them either. I don't fully understand the law, especially regarding the part about "SLAPP" lawsuits. Would that have anything to do with political flags?

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same,
There's a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

This is nothing new. If u don’t want to be judged, don’t advertise or wave banners. My dad who passed 40yrs ago always said “ you never discuss RELIGION, POLITICS or who’s going to sit were at the WEDDING or FUNERAL”! So I think it’s safe to say nothing has changed, loose lips sink ship’s.

Please cite the " Rule " about Flags being flown in The Villages . This subject has been debated often in the past and eventually the outcome is that such flags are allowed .

I have none, but I find it puzzling that people think that displaying a symbol of support for any cause means they are actually supporting that cause. To me, it is analogous to those news anchors who say our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims. I seriously doubt they are going to say a prayer our devote any thoughts other than how to weave the subject into their report.

Most folks with a modicum of savvy realize that rhetoric, bumper stickers, and flags do not change minds about an issue, candidate, or cause. They do change minds about the person proffering their opinion via such methods.

I could not have stated it better. I have often wondered if anyone who posts political opinion on Facebook or TOTV really believe that they are changing anyone's political preferences.

Please cite the " Rule " about Flags being flown in The Villages . This subject has been debated often in the past and eventually the outcome is that such flags are allowed . I can't cite a rule but I did email "community standards" for clarification about a year ago (seems like 10 years) when I first saw two HUGE political flags flying on 2 poles attached to someone's garage and they stated they do not have any control over FLAGS flying on a pole on one's garage or on a flag pole which really made little sense as they have "control" over everything else you do to your property. I believe I posted that email response in a thread back then.

This was the thread with the "official" email answer from C.S.: https://www.talkofthevillages.com/forums/villages-florida-general-discussion-73/official-answer-what-kinds-flags-allowed-thread-295257/

The (photo-shopped to avoid politics) photo of the flag is linked in that thread.

So feel free to fly anything you want attached to your home or your flagpole but don't, I repeat DON'T put a flamingo on your front lawn! :D :D

You obviously aren't getting around too much or not looking around very much. :D Look along O'Dell and in homes backed up to the MMP along Morse. Walk or drive into some of the streets off O'Dell as well. We walk through those areas every morning and there are quite a few more than 1. Most are not along with American flags and many off garages like this one. These are huge banner type flags guessing at least 4x6 feet because they almost touch the ground. There are barely and "signs" (vs. flags) if that is what you are referring to because they are not permitted while flags are.

Many neighborhoods in the Villages have restrictions regulating signs. I don't believe that any have specific flag regulations. Florida has a flag statute that limits flag restrictions and allows any property to hoist an American Flag, MIA KIA or Sate of Florida Flag. NO other flags are protected under this statute. What is a sign ? IMHO since only certain pendants are protected under the Florida statutes any other signs, no matter the material from which they are fabricated or from what mounting device the are "flown" could be reasonably considered subject to the sign rules of a neighborhood . Lets have some civil discourse on this subject- but in case not , Im wearing my Kevlar.

I'm making a flag. It'll be 10 stripes in all rainbow colors. There'll be the Grateful Dead dancing bears in each corner, a skull and crossbones in the middle, and at the end of each bone there'll be a smiley face in sunny yellow. It will be a HUGE flag, and I will hang it prominently from my 25-foot flagpole. Underneath it, will be a smaller flag that says - parenthesis included: ("Hi mom")
