I have been looking at the Villages for some time and find the posts that pertain to dogs interesting. Where is the best place to live in the Villages that is the most accepting of dog owners and is overall dog friendly, especially larger dogs?

This should be any place, as long as you are a good neighbor and follow all of the rules for walking your dog, etc. Villas might not be a good idea due to the very small lawns.

generally speaking, courtyard villa areas have a good percentage of dog owners due to the fenced back yard. my villa in Duval has a pretty large back yard compared to the newer ones being built. We are very tolerant of dogs. there's also a couple of areas of houses with fences.

Look at Marsh Bend.
From what I can see, that area has a lot of grassy areas for you to walk your dog that are not too close to other houses.

The Veranda Designer Homes being built south of 44 have large fenced in yards which are great for dogs. There are also 2 dog parks in the southern villages.

The Villages of Springdale is right next to the dog park plus many dog owners take their pets into the woods right next door to the park. Piedmont is close by too.

We have lived in Sable Chase and Largo and neighbors in both areas have been great for our Golden.

Any place that has a large(r) yard. I would avoid courtyard villas, unless you can find one on the end or on a curved part of the street. South of 466a several homes were built with fenced in back yards. Any realtor can help you locate these homes. As VT posted above, any place is good as long as you are a responsible dog owner.

Yup but newbies here think they don't have to pick up in these grassy areas. When the grandkids visit and want to play in these areas is when the s×#@ will hit the feet!

It’s really up to you. If you’re dog isn’t an incessant barker and you pick up after him, all neighborhoods will be welcoming. If you are of the (as was said to me one time) “dogs bark, get over it” crowd, you’ll have a problem everywhere. Picking up after your dog is super important and not allowing him to poop on another’s property. It’s never the dog’s fault, always the owner’s fault. If you’re a good owner, TV will be very welcoming.

well, I disagree with this. if you don't get a place with a fenced yard, then you have to deal with neighbors all around you. many of the courtyard villas above 466A have larger yards--as mine does and I am not in an end unit. I could add a pool if I wanted.

Besides fenced yards and neighbors, with leash laws in the county, you really probably are looking for a dog park, where you can let your dog run.
The Villages has 6 dog parks. Probably buying near one of them would be a good idea. Here's a link to the info on those parks and their location.

If I were to start over, knowing what I know now, I would buy as close as possible to Doggy Doo Run Run. It's private and either pay as you go or monthly (cheaper), but it is by far the best dog park around TV. It's on CR 101, a mile down the road from Bonefish Grill. The Atlas dog park has no shade, a drainage problem, and few places to sit. The dog park behind the fire station off Buena Vista is on a hill, is small, and pretty pathetic. I don't know about Mulberry--I hear it's nice. I've not been to the ones south of 44.
Ad DDRR you don't even have to pick up after your dog. You stick a flag in the ground next to it, and they come around several times a day and clean the place up. Plus there is a little dog wading pool. (Or at least there was two years ago.)
So Belvedere area or Tall Trees, or that little enclave further along 101. A big plus with Belvedere area is gas heat and cooking.

Sparky, after reading these comments you may have observed that no place in The Villages will be dog friendly if:
a) your dog craps or urinates anywhere except your own yard, or
b) your dog is off leash anywhere except your own property, or
c) your dog barks too much.
Especially if your dog is large.

Any place close to the mail boxes. They make a great dog park area and there are plenty of bushes to pee on.

Not my house. I don't have a dog but am constantly fixing dog pee burns on my grass. People usually pick up dog poop but dog pee is like pouring hydrochloric acid on you grass...no one picks up dog pee

It doesn't hurt St. Augustine grass, we have dogs peeing on our front grass all day long as well as our own dog for the last 3 years and there are zero burns or yellow spots to be found.
