I told the manager months ago they would be going out of business when management began cutting corners on the food. Their corned beef sandwich went from the best, to the worst overnight, for example.

this does not mean the end of TooJay's...this gives them the opportunity to protect themselves from creditors that would force them out of business

now they'll have to restructure and hopefully they will successful emerge from bankruptcy ...it would be a shame if they went under... we never went there much, but ya couldn't beat their pastrami deli sandwiches...I never understood the bakery side of their business and wondered if that was a profit center for them or not

I’m sure they are a corporation so now is a great time to get rid of all their creditors who in reality won’t get any empathy or sympathy. I never was a big fan of their food either and never figured the location they chose at Brownwood. The first of several restaurants that will likely do the same not only here but elsewhere.

We've have more bad than good experiences at Cody's. We stopped going over a year ago. They are dirty and have been shut down more than once. Sad because 4 to 5 years ago when we had family and a home in Ocala we loved Cody's on SR 200.

This is just the beginning. Only 25% of businesses that file chapter 11, as they have, survive. There are consequences to shutting down a 20 trillion dollar economy.

From the SunSentinel re: TooJay's

Companies typically file for Chapter 11 when they plan to remain in operation but need time to restructure their debts. The filing enables companies to remain in operation while they work through the courts to develop long-term plans that satisfy their creditors.

I don’t think you ever had a good pastrami sandwich if you think theirs was the best. Way too much fat. Spoke with manager and he said that was how they receive it. Not a good excuse.

I agree with both. We have gone to Toojays for the last 8 years. They have consistently raised prices and scale down on portions. Quality has been less than I would like. They have continued to take favorite selections off the menu. Don't want them to fail, but they are not what they used to be.

For a company that has been in the business as long as Toojays, they should not have to file bankrupcy. A well managed company should have enough cash and credit to handle even major problems. Yes pandemics are not expected and are the worst kind of problem, but the fed is also helping to bail companies. Filing this quickly only says they were living day to day and not controlling their business and budgets.

Some say Cody's should be gone as well. I totally disagree. I go to Cody's - don't really like the food or the mixed drinks. I find out what entertainment they have. If I like it I go, sit outside, have a beer (actually 2 as it's 2 for 1), a hamburger and fries. Ketchup and onions on the burger. That's what you wind up tasking anyway. So, for a few bucks you get an okay burger and fries, a typical beer and some entertainment for a relatively low price. If you have what you believe is a superior palate and exquisite tastes in entertainment and wine then by all means check out Manhattan. It will only be a couple of bucks more. After all you get what you pay for.

This is what happens when you don't take care of your customer base. Poor management at the Brownwood location has always been a problem. Numerous mess ups on orders for take out recently and when they run a promo they always run out. I stopped going a while ago just because they didn't care.

Sounds like the American public in general . Know many people with family incomes over $200,000 annually, big home, 2 cars, ritzy vacation, and no reserves . Now we "need " to bail these people out. Time for people to be more responsible or pay the piper. I do support stimulus in targeted situations and understand that misjudgements will be made. Goes for corporations and small businesses alike. Cash on Hand is still King.

It is obvious that most of the posters did not read the article “in that other place”. TooJays has three locations in The Villages. Most of their other locations are in south Florida and cannot reopen. Yes, Chapter 11 is a last gap opportunity to stay in business, but three locations in The Villages is not going to keep the entire corporation afloat.

Like all the other restaurants “reviews” if you do not like a restaurant, just don’t go their. Let others make their own choice/decisions. Me, I have alway enjoyed TooJays and will be sorry if they don’t survive this shutdown. I am sure there are going to be others as well.

Lastly, rather than thinking about yourselves and your food choices, think about all the severs, cooks, hostesses, and managers that will be losing their job permanently if TooJays closes. Find you favorite places, and support you local restaurants!

Absolutely correct, bankruptcy is simply a way of saying "Please give me some room to breath while I get back on my feet, I think I can make this work out if you will just work with me"

That's one way to look at it, but if you are the one that lent them money, you hear something different. What lenders hear is, I want to keep my business open without paying back the money I borrowed from you and promised to pay back, with interest. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the businesses that are getting hit with forced closings and a weakened economy, but lenders are in business also. And if enough of the businesses they lent money to file for bankruptcy, they could also be forced into bankruptcy. Lenders seem to be viewed by many as the bad guys, but they are not.

We too have stop going there almost a year ago. They priced themselves right out of the market. They are a family style restaurant and their food is considered comfort foods. Not outstanding food but good comfort type foods. Pricing like they are a four star restaurant and not doing any couponing or other worthwhile discounts has hurt them. Not sure what type of bankruptcy the have file (reorganizational), but if they do continue to be in business they must rethink what will make their customers happy.

And if enough of the businesses they lent money to file for bankruptcy, they could also be forced into bankruptcy. Lenders seem to be viewed by many as the bad guys, but they are not.

As tophcfa states, in financial transactions, there are always two sides, two opposing viewpoints, one the buyer/renter/borrower, and two the seller/landlord/lender. Borrowing money is the same as renting money, there is a monthly rental payment due. Buyers/renters and sellers/borrowers always have the opposite view.

The financial issue is always economic stability, the more the better, the less, the more difficult. The villages corp is in the same position as many, many other commercial real estate management companies. FirstCitizens bank and the state and county governments are also in the same position as many other banks, urban state and county governments around the country.

I am eager to see how the villages corp handles the retail situations. . . will they adapt and have a quick recovery? or be rigid, and have a hard time bouncing back. We are somewhat dependent on their choices. . . . a trade off we ALL made for the location and the amenities. . .

Absolutely correct, bankruptcy is simply a way of saying "Please give me some room to breath while I get back on my feet, I think I can make this work out if you will just work with me"

But most often it just passes the problem up the line.

For example, if their kitchen equipment is worth $200,000 but they owe $500,000 Chapter 11 court would likely allow them to reduce the principal and pay only on the lower amount.

Good for the filer, bad for the business that loaned them the money. That next level up could be a relatively small business that borrowed money to buy the equipment to sell on terms to TooJays. Now they won’t get paid enough to cover their expenses and might also go bankrupt if enough of their customers stop paying.

And on it goes to the next level up.

These will be VERY challenging times if the lockdown extends much longer.

I hope I'm wrong, but this is probably the first of many. And it won't just be restaurants. A lot of small businesses across the country won't be returning. I'm worried about the vendors from the farmers market, the market nights on the town squares, small retail shops and boutiques, salons, etc. And not just these businesses; how are the people they employed getting by? If governors are slow to re-open their states, we just wasted an enormous amount of stimulus and payroll protection money.
