I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with local attorneys who's primary specialty is in the area of Florida Elder Law that they would recommend?

Like many of you, we're transplants form another state and would like to understand more about preplanning strategies and actions that are legally available to us now, in the event that one spouse ends up in a long term care situation down the road here in Florida.

We already have Florida wills, POA, etc...we do not have LT Care Insurance and we are not interested in having discussions on going that route presently.

Our objective is to make sure that the spouse that remains in 'the general community' has enough financial reserves / income to continue to live the life style that we'd want the other to have.

We've heard some sad stories of how failure to plan has left the spouse that remained in the general community cash poor due to the cost of nursing home care.

We went through them, nothing but mistakes and had to have a document corrected THREE times. Not acceptable for us to be correcting an attorney's error. I do not recommend that law firm. We did go to the "original" Millhorn which is now Millhorn and Shanaway, went to Mr Millhorn, very knowledgeable, no nonsense guy who will not over-charge a customer! Very pleased and not one second of frustration.

Amy Pittman. She holds monthly seminars on different topics and sends out a monthly newsletter to keep you informed. Her services don't end with your payment.

Eric Millhorn Law Firm

We used Eric Millhorn to update our original "out of state" plan, he came highly recommended by our investment counselors and we were very pleased with his services. We also learned a good bit about veterans' benefits offered in FL.
Also love the beautiful old home where his office is located...reminds me of my grandfathers "turn of the century" early 1900's home where my Dad grew up and where my siblings and I were lucky enough to grow up as well.

There are a few lawyers in the area that are often recommended, and they have been mentioned here already. We decided to go with Mary Trotter because she is board certified in Florida elder law, a qualification that only a relatively few lawyers in Florida have. We were very satisfied with everything.

I meant to add this to my post: If I understand your concerns correctly, in addition to an elder law attorney, you may want to consider looping in a CPA, financial planner, and/or a tax attorney to your advisory team.
