Ever since the Sumter County Library eliminated Overdrive I have been able to get my ebooks through the Alachua Library. You only needed to be a resident of Florida. I got this recommendation on this site 4 years ago. Today I received notice they are eliminating e-books to anyone outside of their county as of June 1. Sumter’s library system did not at the time work with their system. Has anyone had any success using their system with Kindle paper white. Thanks all!

I'm in the same boat as you. I got the dreaded notice this morning as well. It would be nice if Sumter county would re-activate the overdrive system. We certainly pay enough taxes to Sumter county. I'm so disappointed as I really enjoy reading with the kindle.

When Sumter County changed from Overdrive, I drove over to the Lake County library on 441/27, which uses Overdrive, and offers either Kindle or ebooks. Paid $20 for annual fee. Well worth it to me.

Sumter County Library system now offers Hoopla, which is supposed to be compatible with Kindle. Unfortunately I have not been able to get it to work with my Kindle. I have successfully downloaded books to read on my IPad but can’t figure out how to access them on Kindle.

The Sumter County library system uses the "Axis360" app, which is not compatible with the Kindle book format. But, you can use it to read books using a tablet, such as a Kindle Fire or other tablet. I agree that it would be a lot better if they would start using the Overdrive app. Someone at the library told me that the Overdrive app is too expensive.

I think it is irresponsible for the Sumter County libraries to use no security system for their books and DVDs. Maybe, if they would invest in a security system, they could afford to buy the Overdrive app. I have seen people walk out of the library with 7 or 8 DVD movies and not check them out. The DVD cases are not even locked, so people can just remove the discs and put them in their pocket.

I installed Hoopla and it seems to work about the same way that the Axis360 app works. You can read books in a browser on a tablet, computer, or a Kindle Fire. But, you cannot download the books in the Kindle format to read them on a Kindle Ereader, like the Paperwhite. Bummer.

Agreed & I love my paper white. I do not want to upgrade my kindle.

Tablets like Ipad's are great for many things but for just reading books electronically, I'll bet the vast amount of readers would prefer Kindle Paper-white. Once you use one, you'll love it.

I have the new Kindle Oasis, which I like better than the Paperwhite. It has an adjustable color background and it has real buttons for turning the pages. I especially like the buttons. It also has bluetooth for audible books, but I really don't use that.

My Paperwhite is several years old and after reading your post I took a look at the Oasis. It is tempting. It's just so damn expensive! I'm going to think about it, though. Thanks!

I just sent an email to this person asking politely could Sumter County please bring back the Overdrive Format so the hundred's of us who love the Kindle can get our books. Maybe others here could do the same? It's worth a try...:pray:

I went to the Sumter County library at Pinellas today. The only things you can do are use the computers, pick up a book on hold, and return materials. Wasted trip for me.

I am almost positive that TV libraries were privatized somewhere around 2013, meaning county tax money is going to a private company. $uch companie$ do not do thi$ for free.

The Lake County Library was still a public library the last time I checked. Public libraries are much more geared to their patrons — their customers.

I think there is an old thread archived somewhere here on TOTV from the time when this change was under discussion. I think the change to privatization went through fa$t. A search should find the old thread. It can be an interesting, historical read, complete with an interloper going on and on about how wonderful the corporation taking over would be. Her sales pitch was painfully obvious, rather like a canned speech.

My wife had eye surgery 6 weeks ago, and is waiting for her new spectacles.
She has been using Youtube for audio books, and it has been a Godsend for her.
They have a whole lot of titles and categories.

This is a copy and paste from the Lake County Library. You can only do this in-person, however, all the Library's are closed because of Covid 19.

A non-resident may purchase an annual library membership by paying a fee of forty dollars ($40.00). We also offer a six-month card for twenty dollars ($20.00) and a one-month card for ten dollars ($10.00). Fees must be paid at the time of registration for the card to become valid.

I see my choices as pay Lake County or sign up for Kindle unlimited.
