View Full Version : Villages Water Supply?

So I distill my own water for use in my CPAP machine. Today when I looked at the residue it was a dark brown. It's normally has a brown tinge to it but never a dark brown. I use cold tap water and let the faucet run for a while before I fill up the distiller. Just curious does anyone know the history of the water system here in the Villages? They've been doing some work on the golf course in our neighborhood I wonder if maybe something got in the line?

So I'm a cheap skate! My wife and I both have CPAP machines so it's more than a gallon per month, plus we use the distilled water for other purposes, such as crystal clear ice cubes, and to wash the car so not to get water spots. We also make our own alkaline water, which if bought in the store is about $4 a gallon.

FYI, the Walmart Great Value brand is $0.78 per gallon.

Really? You're willing to have brown water in your CPAP so you can used your distilled water to wash your car, and save $0.78 in the process? Please don't do that any more, a car with no spots isn't worth a pseudomonas pneumonitis or worse.

No, just the water used for irrigation south of 466 is "reclaimed"

Do you have a whole house filter or a filter on the faucet you use to get the water you distill? The filter may need changing. Also if your filtration system uses some type media that was recently changed, that might affect the water color

I'm not sure yet, we're renting been here about a month in the Polo Ridge area. We were RVing around the country until the Virus, decided to hunker down thru December to see what happens. I'll have examine the water system in the house.

Do you know if a boil water notice has been issued for your area?

Here's some info (https://www.districtgov.org/departments/Utilities/boil.aspx) from the district gov site.

This is from the 2nd run of the day, which I started about noon. The slightly brown tinged water is what I've typically been seeing most everyday since we've been here. Total Dissolved Solids runs about 155 ppm, which is not that bad actually. We were staying at an RV resort close to Kingsbay GA, I'd get about 350 ppm TDS with a thick white sludge left over afterwards.

I use the Distilled water from Walmart too, but see no reason why you should not do your own. I live in the Village of Poinciana and this past week Jacobs came through opening all the fire hydrants to flush the system. I worked for a water utility in CT and when there was annual hydrant flushing we would inform residents to run water for a bit before using because the flushing loosened and stirred up sediment on inside of transmission pipe walls and water might be brownish...albeit safe. Flush
ing hydrants in your area?

Have you considered using a 5 stage reverse osmosis unit under the sink?

Distillation will not remove all the chemicals.

Your TDS will drop to about 15, we have several customers using them for their CPAP & general drinking cooking etc.

Actually, all potable water is reclaimed.

jimbo2012

care to share with us where you got that info from?

Reclaimed water is highly treated and disinfected but still contains some constituents at levels outside the desirable range for drinking water. Specifically, reclaimed water may have higher levels of salts, nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), and pathogens (e.g., bacteria and viruses). Reclaimed water has been safely used for non-drinking purposes in Florida for more than 40 years, but because of its composition, this water source should never be used for drinking or sanitary purposes.

Water standards have been relaxed chances are you may be getting filterred water as distilled.

We had an RO system at our home in Maryland, we had a well with very hard water. If I buy a house here in the Villages I will definitely install one of them, since we are just renting now I will just continue with distilling several gallons a day. I've found that the RO and Distiller both are effective at removing unwanteds down to about the 9 PPM level.

Thanks for everyone's responses didn't mean to cause alarm or stir anything up, just reporting something unusual to see if anyone knew something that could explain it.

We use a “zero” water filter which removes all minerals down to <6 mho. Same as distilled water and we use this in our coffee maker and never get any scale. They come with a tester to prove it is working. So much better than the “britta” unit we used to use.

We have filtered water in the frig. We drink that most of the time but still use tap water for cooking and coffee etc. We have never had a stomach virus in the 13 years we have been here. Discoloration doesn't mean it is unsafe to drink. I trust they are doing the job and making it safe to drink.

We are still here, but still are thinking about a water purifier because of calcium buildup on sinks that are hard to remove. They don't harm but they are ugly and difficult to keep up with.

Obviously water spots occur if water droplets dry on the car. I squirt the car with water until all the large gunk is off. I then take a sponge with a 50% vinegar and water mix and wash the car, with special emphasis on the windows. Quickly I squeegee the windows and then with a towel, I dry the car. Any remaining moist parts of the towel I use to wipe off any water spots that remained. My car is spot free, and the whole process is 10 minutes!!

I have been using the CPAP machine for over 12 years with the TV tap water!!! Look at me and I am still alive and healthy! Every month I used vinegar to clean the water chamber's residue! Breathing from tap water is the same as distilled water because the moisture in the air is the same, no different. Only the difference is the residue in the water chamber is from the tap water! If you do not agree, google how the water is distilled!

" They've been doing some work on the golf course in our neighborhood I wonder if maybe something got in the line?"

What got in to the sprinkler system water line on the golf course is fertilizer. Massive liquid fertilizer tanks have been installed on new concrete pads adjacent to some of the pump stations that bring water up from the lakes. Trees were planted around them during the last week or so to hide the tanks and hide...well, you know, what needs not to be seen or asked about.
The liquid fertilizer concentrate is mixed with the lake/preserve water at the pump station and then pumped through the sprinkler system on to the golf courses, nearby green areas, the roads, car paths etc,.
Federal deregulation of restrictions on water and chemical usage on golf courses took place last month. I guess that didn't make the news.
Couldn't say where the chemicals go in the run off into watershed, ponds, lakes or effect on wildlife both in the water and around it.
Also don't know about what occurs due to overflowing the soil capacity, like when the sprinklers runs in the rain storms to reduce the water level in the ponds.
I could not venture to say how your home water was effected, but I also use a gallon or two a month with CPAP and enjoy the ease and low cost of the store purchase when needed.
