Doing a little Re-Decorating- wall color advice desperately needed!!

When we first moved here, our whole house was some sort of peach! Because of the open concept, different from the one we came from in NJ, where I was able to chose colors on my own, it was difficult to choose wall colors. We were
able to find a “decorator“ who just helped us pick out paint colors, but not really happy with results.

Changing our couch and dining table- then looking for dining chairs and coffee table. The wall colors in our family room, dining area, kitchen, and entry hall need to be changed... along with probably repainting the cabinets of a granite-topped built in bar-like piece we inherited in the dining area.

I’m looking for someone who has a good eye for color, enjoys the process, and would be willing to give me some advice. My taste is pretty far from traditional or the norm as seen here. Wall color is my only dilemma.. Anyone out there willing to help?

you might be able to get a referral from one of the Sherwin William stores to an individual that offers this type of service...but I'm not sure if they have reopened yet

Not sure if it still around, but Home Depot or Lowe's had an app at one time where you could take a picture of your room and then (by magic??) change the wall color. This sounded like a great idea, but i never got around to trying it.

When I wanted to change the wall color in my home, I used a free app called Paint Harmony. It let me choose from many different paint manufacturers and all the colors they offered. I just tool a picture of my room, selected the paint I wanted and then touched the wall area of the picture. The paint filled in the wall area and left my furniture alone. Was a great way to see what the color would look like on the wall with my furniture.

What is YOUR favorite color? Go with that. I have loved blue-green for always and I don't like orange. You will find a lot of teal and turquoise in my home.

Find a picture in a magazine or online of a room you love and study the colors used in that room. I am doing that now as I try to change the color scheme a little in the lanai...and keep it still with the rest of the house. There is a poster on this forum called LaryB and his wife is doing some consulting. She is a novice but she has some of the best color sense and decorating sense of any person I have ever met. Not sure if the service is still available, but when we moved here a couple years ago, Sherwin Williams in Lake Sumter Landing had a “color consultant.” The consultant came to our house with a huge color palette and recommended wall and accent wall colors that would go with our furniture and floors. The cost for her consultation was $95, but it came with a $50 coupon for paint at Sherwin Williams.

What I did was on TV website under homes there are a couple of hundred resales, I would flip though the photos of each inside until I found something that looked good with my flooring and furniture in my home. For example this room right here. You can get other decorating ideas, like crown molding, wood floors, just see what others have done.

All of your suggestions make sense. I did originally incorporate my favorite color, teal, into the room. Thankfully, the new couch is is going to be a neutral color (oatmeal). I think all of the granite in a weird area (like a built in summer kitchen without the grill!) in the dining area is throwing me off. The paint color on the wall surrounding it would have to blend with the built-in that’s now a creamy Beige (yellowy undertone, if I don’t paint that as well). I’ll figure it out but will definitely use one of the suggested services. Thanks!

Lowe’s sells 2x2 pieces of wall board. Buy 2 or 3. Buy a couple of paint samples. In neutral colors.
Paint the boards Then move them around the rooms, live with them for a bit. See how you like them.
Also. The Sherwin Williams stores are very helpful.

I know that color well. It’s a nice warm gray. I used the same on the first level of our home up North. But went a shade lighter in some rooms and a shade darker in others. Prefer more than one shade or color.

I can drive myself crazy when it comes to choosing paint. I have used the Sherwin-Williams consulting service, but I did not use the recommendations. I ended up choosing what I personally liked — though the consultation did give me a place to start by narrowing down the choices. (I went deeper than the one that was recommended. White woodwork seems to allow deeper colors.)

What helps me the most is springing for those little sample cans that are mixed to whatever colors you think you might like. Then I paint good-sized pieces paper or poster board and hang them around so I can look at them for a while, at different times of day, in different lighting. S-W has kits for this.

I smiled when I saw your question. After weeks of being at home, I am starting to feel hostility toward my couch. I am afraid I am slipping mentally into an entire redecorating project.

I used the Home Depot app to figure out colors for our home in Michigan when we were getting ready to sell. It really helped and gave us the opportunity to try different colors that maybe were outside of our thinking. We ended up with a color we would have never thought we would like and the finished product when done was awesome and we loved it!!

I'm a sucker for what I call a warm white. I have lots of paintings/art work that gives the pop of colours without fighting with overly colored walls. And I find the off white always makes the home feel bright and large, but the trend these days is the grey tones, which can be quite classy.

You mentioned teal, we used a light blue. Our home up north I painted all three levels a light blue with bamboo wood floors, plantation shutters and when people walked in, they said, it feels like we've gone to Key West. When we listed the home for sale, we sold it to the first couple to come and see the home.

So when we moved here we had Investment Painters paint our inside the same color. I don't have a better photo right now, but this will give you an idea.

Been there, done that. Last month I put up 24 photos. I went on eBay and bought 24 photos 8"x10" of old shows and movies that I liked. Then went on Walmart website and bought 24 frames, only $14 for six with glass front. They came bubble wrapped and free shipping. Put everything on the wall in three rows.

It is available, at least it was prior to coronavirus, at all SHerwin Williams stores. I took advantage of it and was very happy with the results although it is a process. At first I didn't like what she picked but as it has grown on me. When I am in the room and study it, I see why she chose the colors that she did. I would have had 3 or 4 colors on the wall before I found one I liked.
