saddened to read this, as we too have enjoyed taking out-of-town visitors to KB's for dinner and show
on the flip side...there's been a lot of 'bashing' on the developer asking what's he doing to support local businesses yadda, yadda
I'm certain that as the landlord he's been doing a lot to help the businesses around the squares survive....this is just another example...my guess is that he doesn't want to compete with the other restaurants while they're trying to make a come back
smart business move...albeit disappointing for the Katie Belle employees

Since they ruined the original concept of a place for Village Residents only, we have never gone back to Katie Bells. We used to love the Cattleman's Club Restaurant and the sights at Katie Bells on a Saturday night. We also miss El Santiago and Hacienda Hills Restaurants. OH Well!

When we first bought here Katie Belles was instrumental in our decision to buy here. In fact we were told there would probably be a "Katie Belles" in Lake Sumter which at the time wasn`t built yet. We go there many, many times throughout the year and enjoy it immensely. If this is the case that they are closing for good, you can bet your sweet butt that they weren`t very profitable with Katie Belles. I hope the article was misleading and that it will reopen one day.

what nobody but the owners knows is whether the venue was profitable or not
There's always the chance that someone else will move in once the economy gets back on it's feet...happens all the time with restaurants...one goes out and another goes in (unless the location was just awful)

I loved the old KB's, if you didn't like the band at the square, walk in and find a table around the dance floor, and good chance Uncle Bob or somebody better than the square was playing. If needed a snack, they had great pizza and cold beer by the pitcher.
I went one time to the new place, didn't like anything about it and never went back.

Never like to see any place close regardless of whether or not it is a place we frequent. First concern is the employees and second is that the other places will have longer waits when things eventually return to the new normal.

The old Katie Belles stayed above water when it was open to all then many people complained about non residents and the problems that so called came with them . When the villages stopped giving away coupons for perspective buyers that left a bunch of people ordering lemon and water and complaining when they started it having a cover charge. I’m out at least 4 or 5 nights a week ( not now ) I have nothing against the place but I guess they gave me no reason to go either , things change especially restaurants I would rather be at BoneFish , Bluefin , Chop House

The big question now is, where is Donna Moore and Dunning Shaw going to perform. Some smart restaurant will hire them every week.

Katie Belles, that was the headquarters of the infamous " Captain Midnight " the guy allegedly had a thick address book. Popular with the ladies who frequented Katie's.
He is mentioned in the book " Leisureville " which is all about The Villages.
Who knows whatever happened to him, he might be living in Freedom Point or Coleman. :ohdear:

With no hint if, how, or when the squares will open I predict a couple restaurants within a stones throw of Katie Belle's will also be closing shortly. FYI drive by SS square around 3PM and observe what looks like a "bar" to me that is open. People sitting arm to arm on stools with drinks in hand. At least across the street they are seated at tables and appear to be eating.

Never returned to KB, since the renovation, used to like the old layout & had several nice meals @ the upstairs bar
IMHO, the Villages cocktail crowd made the place unprofitable--can't make money with a glass of iceboater & a lemon wedge
Also, the area around SS is frequented by an aging demographic who are just too cheap to support an upper scale establishment
Flame on, looks like the Villages management has come to the same conclusion

I believe that the probable closure of Katie Belle's was due to the fact that the developer wasn't bring in any enough money. Why else would you be closing? The Villages Daily Sun article in today's paper of 5-12-20 mentioned that there were more opportunities for dining and entertainment in The Villages. If Katie Belle's was doing well they would still be open. Katie Belle's was unique with the huge dance floor and seating upstairs and downstairs. It was reminiscent of a southern restaurant of yesteryear with plenty of charm. I'm sure thousands of dollars was spent for a "facelift". They were hoping to make more money by getting rid of the big dance floor, squeezing all the tables upstairs and hiring paid entertainment. It was just plain greed.

I suspect there would have been a compliance issue with both spacing and serving. There is also the possibility that by remaining closed they will help those business's that have leases with them by not competing.. I do understand that you enjoy stirring the pot since you used the word greed.....your motive becoming evident

Dave, I have to think that is it in a nutshell. There wasn't enough traffic in the old one, and probably not enough in the new one. Not enough trade, not enough people, not enough money to buy supplies, pay the help and make the margin. The restaurant business is a tough one. Google percentage of new restaurants that close within two years in NORMAL times. There will be a lot of them go dark here, there and everywhere, sadly.

When I came here in 2001, it was an Icon of the life style of the Villages, fine dinning up stairs at the Cattlemen's and casual dining and entertainment and dancing down. I would have miss it but the powers to be destroyed it when they moved it up stairs and opened to the masses. So no I won't miss it .:faint:

Won't miss KB's at all! Many of the service people and front desk seemed rude at times. Singles were not welcomed and the price to sit at a table, above and beyond on the food cost was a bit ridiculous - Maybe it will be turned into something we all will enjoy even more! One can hope!

A profit deal = reason for being in business.
This is not a charity and if the business can't support itself, it needed to close.
If every resident who complains about this had gone now and then, they likely would not be closing.

Another example of the developers bureaucrats not getting the citizens input before remodeling Katie Belles or Hacienda CC or Realto Theater, etc. etc. Katie Belles, such a fine place, remodeled, ruined, then closed. Do you get input from others before you spend your own money? Why should the developer get citizens input to invest theirs? They have a damn sight better track record than most with knowing where to put their $.
Feel free to spend / invest your money as you see fit and leave others to do the same.

Something that I just thought of while reading these posts is was it fair to have a restaurant that is owned by The Villages competing with restaurants that are being rented from The Villages.
It's possible that they have someone ready to rent out the building.
When you think about it, why would the owner of a property want to go through all the hassle of running a place like that when they can sit back and collect rent?

I never understood the concept of having a large dinner while Rocky & the Rollers, Johnny Wild or Uncle Bob is blasting loud rock music at you. When you go to a ball game to watch an event, you might have a hot dog, a taco, some kind of finger food.

That's why I liked the old Katie Belles. You didn't need a reservation. You slipped in and usually tables would come open and a pizza and pitcher of beer was all you needed. Usually the music was the centerpiece and the dance floor. If you wanted a meal, there was upstairs and the music was just muffled enough that it wasn't a problem. Don't fix it, if it ain't broke.

Was never the same when they moved it upstairs. Loved it when it was villagers only downstairs. Used to go there for lunch - never opened upstairs for lunch. Won't be missed here.
We moved here after the "remodeling" was done, and never really enjoyed going there.
Having children included in what I felt should have been a "Night Club" atmosphere just annoyed me. Sometimes toddlers would be running thru the room, with adoring parents playfully chasing them. And the high top chairs were uncomfortable.
Too bad they turned this formerly great venue into a place with all the ambiance of a Golden Corral.

I’m sad I didn’t go to KB. The main reason I would have liked to go is that it was a unique experience—not a chain. Both have their place, I think. I like the consistent quality and predictability of chains but the real-feel of a local establishment is a welcome break from cookie-cutter. Finding a really good, unique local place is like finding a pearl. I hope KB will reopen and reclaim the heart & soul of TV.

Keep taking away the reasons to move here
10 years we miss many changes that figured into our decision to drink the Koolaid
They may call it progress how ever at times you have to look back and evaluate what made us what we are.
If this was important when you chose TV, did you continue to support KB after you moved in? Sometimes a place can be quaint & nostalgic, but not profitable. As a comparison, if it weren’t owned & operated by Disney, I doubt the Hoop-Dee-Do Revue would have still been operating (pre-COVID) It’s good food, the show is good, homestyle fun, but I only went twice in 40 years. Once I had seen the show, it was rather expensive to repeat especially since it felt like a been-there-done-that experience. KB sounds very similar.
Progress/change happens. I try to remain grateful that I had the chance to experience things while they lasted. I collect the wonderful memories then seek to add some new ones. It’s as if I am writing my life’s book in chapters. None of them last for the entire length of the book—because they aren’t supposed to—but (thankfully) the last ones are still to be written.

Central Florida isn’t known for truly fine dining. Try West Palm or South Beach for that. I think fine dining is lacking because of the strong economic influence of the family-centered theme parks & fixed-income retirees. Most places are fast-casual. Orlando & Tampa have some nice options. Did you try Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa? Bern’s decor is not what’s impressive. The steaks and humongous wine cellar are world-class. A few of the massive hotel complexes in Orlando also house great restaurants. I tend to prefer casual Mom-and-Pops but The Villages has very few of those. Lots of chains. I wonder if all of the chains will remain since many are almost homogeneous.

I heard a rumor that either a COSTCO or Trader Joe's was going to go in there.

I must have missed it, I don't recall any promises like that. Really they promised there would always be a Katie Belles?
We weren't promised there would always be a Katie Belle's but we were sold the bill of goods that there was a restaurant/bar/dance hall with entertainment in Spanish Springs that catered only to Villages residents. See how that worked out.

Many Originals that we know who are still in The Villages have fond memories of KB'S. They concede that the luster of the place was lost some time ago and are surprised it lasted as long as it did.
Being relatively new we would never even have tried the place. No appeal from the outside. Too much competition in The Villages and after the Virus is contained and it will be, it may be a while until the empty storefronts and restaurants are replaced by another establishment.
I'm sorry for the hopes and dreams and lightened pockets that this Virus has given so many people. That's inclusive of the Very Rich and The Mom & Pop Shops and all those in between and the families who have financial worries on top of health concerns.
No. I've never been there. Way too far away from where I live.
That's exactly why it's closing...
New home buyers say "Spanish Springs? All the way up there. Isn't that near Ocala?"
Katie Belle's was once THE PLACE to be in The Villages.
Sad to see it go.
It was loosely modeled after Bob Snow's Cheyenne Saloon on Church Street.

Yes, I expected there would always be an establishment just for Villages residents. That was a very big push by the sales rep and also the trolley hostess when we took the trolley tour. I'm disappointed that option has gone by the wayside. Not what I was expecting after all the talking up of the establishment only for Villagers.
Katie Belle's was a great option to listen to our favorite bands and performers in the hotter months. We enjoyed the bands more in the air conditioning.

I support coffeebean. Many moons ago when we arrived a major sales pitch was residents only exclusive club - Katie Belle's. The Villages gave out Villages Lifestyle dollars to be spent at Katie Belle's on a lifestyle visit.

We will Miss Katie Belle's. It was the greatest restaurant to attend in 1997 when we moved here. The Decor was gorgeous. Then, they decided to close the downstairs, which was a big mistake. It was never the same. People did love the entertainment and dancing and great food.

So there is no issue...................you were never promised and you were told there WAS a place. Exactly what happened. There WAS an establishment and the future was never promised.

Clearly it wasn't a deal-breaker for about 130,000 residents. When a restaurant / bar closes with such a large captive audience, you have to consider that it may have just run its course. If more people went there regularly, they would have stayed open.
I went there exactly twice in 7 years. I expect the majority would report similar visits.

not surprised that many will close their doors for good....that's a shame, but it's a very difficult business
no idea how true this is, but I read somewhere years ago that the average lifespan of a restaurant is about 7 years

Good locations, good features (food, music, ambiance, etc.) will return soon AFTER true normalcy does. That’s what capitalism is about. There were failures for the lack of qualities listed above, BEFORE COVID; that’s also what capitalism is about. A generation, or three, raised on “instant gratification” in a society of “instant information/disinformation” is not well-suited for any kind of waiting game, especially in the land where “we’re entitled” is the prevailing national sentiment.

No, I expected there will always be an establishment for just Villagers whether it by Katie Belles or another establishment. That concept was touted to us as prospective buyers as if it were the best thing since sliced bread. We had coupons for two to go to Katie Belles on our life style visit.
I understand things change. There are no guarantees in life so my expectations were dashed. I was just expressing my disappointment that Katie Belles is not an option any more for Villagers.

Actually you were not promised golf for life but if you were it did not stipulate how many courses. You were not promised flowers at public areas in writing. You were not promised how many Rec Halls and even if the existing ones would remain open - on and on and on. What is your point ? Why would you want to site me out for pointing out factual history ? Do you believe I'm making this up ? I still stand by coffebean. PS I went there hundreds of times in 15 years. To each his own - I dislike pickleball - I don't say to others I have only done it twice as if it is the plague.
I suspect there were pre-covid 19 issues with Katie Bell's. There was an ad in the help wanted section of The Sun that seemed to be basically permanent. So I always suspected management issues/employee issues which usually means money problems.

I suspect they didn't want SS to be a distraction in convincing people to buy further south. Take away anything they can, Katie Belles, Santiago Club, Chula restaurant, Church on the Square. These were to draw buyers. Not needed anymore. The real money is in selling new houses.
What might they conveniently take away from LSL?

Remember when you took your fist tour of the Villages
Katie Bells was touted as this YOUR entertainment spot and restaurant
Broken Promises?
Like makers of VCR's, boxy televisions, record players, carbon paper, typewriters, phone books, buggy whips....on and on. All great items that when invented, no one saw the end. But progress happens. Get over it.

The rationale for the original Katie Belle's closure by many posters here on TOTV was freeloading residents sipping water with lemon. I failed to see water with lemon sippers since Katie Belle's moved upstairs.Minimum spend limits, cover charges, raised prices, cut hours, and limited space apparently wasn't the magic formula. Plus all that space downstairs was supposedly extremely valuable retail space. Go ahead off the top of your head name the stores that went into the old Katie Belle's space (not Chico's - was there before the change). Whats' the rationale now? Apparently old folks homes are more profitable than restaurants. An old folks home most likely will only benefit a few dwellers and the owner not 120 K plus residents or downtown retailers. The winds of change are blowing in some not so fragrant aromas.

In your prior life, did you work for or own a business whose operating plan was "let's keep losing money when options are available"?
What normal person would think that makes sense?

If the developer can't make money downtown in his own business what chance does a tenant renting space from him have ? I don't believe the developer was loosing money on Katie Belle's before and after the change.

You don't have to have access to a companies financial books to figure out that when it closes they obviously weren't making money.
The federal government isn't a business in no shape or form, it's not supposed to make a profit. Apples and watermelon comparison.
When the government needs more money they raise taxes, a business can't force people to buy at their establishment so it has enough money to stay afloat.

Since the redo, I couldn't understand why they were not open on all the nights that The Sharon had shows especially on Sundays. A missed opportunity to make money and they missed it. So many restaurants are into the high top tables and a lot of people just find them uncomfortable.

Maybe because a bunch of cruising old Villagers drinking Lake County Cocktails (water and lemon) just wasn't justification to be open.
