This has been an issue since the beginning. The same people who were posting stay at home, if you don't you're entitled, selfish and an idiot that will kill us all, were the ones running around OUTSIDE THEIR HOMES taking pictures and describing incidents of OTHER people not staying at home. I was reading some posts for and against reopening here in The Villages and our country in general. One was talking about being selfish and it got me to thinking.
There are those wanting to reopen yet they’re being classified as selfish. There are those that rely on all kinds of people to supply them while they cower in fear at home. Isn’t that being selfish too?
You expect your garbage to be picked up, you expect the grocery store to be open so you can get milk, you expect truck drivers to supply the stores, you expect farmers, meatpackers, fruit and vegetable pickers all to keep food in that grocery store.
You expect Amazon to still ship all the things you’re ordering while you sit at home shopping. You expect the delivery driver to leave it on your doorstep. You expect your phone to work, your power to stay on, and your mail to show up rain, sleet, or shine. And most important, you expect the doctors and nurses to be there if you need them although many of them across the country have been furloughed because their units and services have been shut down while the entire system focuses only on COVID19.
The whole premise of shelter in place is based on the arrogant idea that others must risk their health so you can protect yours. There is nothing virtuous about ignoring the largely invisible army required to allow people to shelter in place.
I know there are some of you that are screaming mad about what I just said but stop and really think about what is allowing you to stay safe in your home.
I truly believe that with some common sense on my part, I could easily go back to life as it was. I want to go to restaurants, I want to shop at the little store just up the road.
And yes, I could catch COVID-19. I could also catch the flu or a cold. I could die from obesity. I could die from a heart attack. I could be in a car accident. I could get run over by a bus. I could get struck by lightning. We take risks everyday. If you choose to stay home, that is absolutely your choice. And please don’t start screaming at me about how I’ll just spread it. Why are you worried? You won’t get it because you’re staying in your home. Are you going to forever cringe and glare everytime someone coughs, sneezes or has the sniffles? Are you going to shelter in place every time a new strand of the flu happens?
Our economy can’t withstand much more of this. If our economy collapses, so will the rest of the world’s. If that happens, you will see the rise of tyrants.
I absolutely don’t want people to die...from COVID or anything else. I want people to live.
But sheltering in place is not living.

The folks that are gathering and going into the restaurants are the early adapters...they're testing the water for the rest of us
(and helping these local businesses get back up on their feet)...
I read recently that going grocery shopping isn't as much of a risk because you're in and out (unless you get caught up waiting in the zucchini line)...however indoor events and restaurants present a greater risk because you're there for a longer period of time
...not sure if that's true, but it made sense to me on the surface
Hopefully these early adapters don't end up like the soldiers that were in the first few waves of landing craft that hit Omaha, and other Normandy Beaches back in the day....

From what I've seen in the Villages, the obese, unhealthy, and nursing home residents are in lock down. They are the ones that need a quarantine. Those gathering are younger, healthier, active with a strong immune system. They are in the group of no symptoms from Covid19. If they get it, they then get immunity.

I think history will judge Sweden as having the best approach. Their only goof-up was not doing something about the nursing homes. That's where most of their deaths have occurred.
But they haven't destroyed their economy and quality of life.
After we reopen, I think you'll see a resurgence of the virus and the number of deaths will pan out to be the same rate overall.
The only difference will be that we made ourselves miserable and destroyed our livelihoods in the misguided attempt to outsmart Mother Nature.

Personally we are being careful - social distance and mask (primarily when shopping etc), but our life goes on, golf and outdoor stuff - maskless. BUT we are sensitive and caring to others, and in the case we DID catch Covid - we keep our distance.

A person’s rights stop when they infringe on someone else’s rights. Spreading the virus affects more people than just the person who doesn’t care. In the 70’s people were arrested if they had HIV and had sex without telling their partner. The constitution does not give people the right to do whatever they want if it harms others.

For all of the whiners, just how many people do you know, personally and for a fact, lived here in The Villages and died from Covid19 which they caught from the golfers, people out and about, wrong way shoppers, etc, etc.?

We are not getting rid of the virus anyway, that was never the plan. The plan was to slow its roll a little so the healthcare system could become more prepared. This has taken place. The death rate in the U.S. has dropped from 29% to 22% over the past month. The reason for this is that the health care system now has ways to prevent more deaths. This gets better everyday as new medicines and treatments develop. Herd immunity also develops everyday. Eventually on its own the virus will die off. New evidence on how it travels changes daily. The latest key advances are, the virus is not spread widely by casual contact, but more rapidly by family members hunkered down inside. The next advancement tells us the virus is not passed outside or in hot climates like originally believed. The biggest injustice of this virus, is making people believe they will die "IF" they get the virus. 99.9% not only survive, but have little or no effect. Just like other diseases, it may be too late to change how you lived your life to avoid the results of dying from a disease now. I guess you had the opportunity in most cases to control your own destiny just like you have the opportunity now to "protect yourself" as you see fit.

Why is this your problem? MYOB!
If it only affected the people involved it would be different but it doesn't. Someone that gets the virus may be the one you come in contact with at a store or maybe the gas pump. I read where a woman got it by touching a keypad at a pharmacy. Don't ask me how they trace these things back...I don't know.
I'm not belittling the people that choose to go out but why be careless? Why not invite your friends over for drinks and sit outside spaced safely apart? Some are talking about the economy taking a hit and they are right but what's it going to be like if the second wave of this thing is worse?
Maybe the best post I saw on this thread was the one that someone said all the folks at RJ's were young, healthy individuals with healthy immune systems...young? In the villages? What is the average age in the villages? Of course, it is your business what you do but you would have to been living under a rock for the last few months if you believe that your actions can't affect others. The whole "stay at home if you're scared" just don't get it and most know it or should.

They’ll find out...we’ll all find out.
If the morbidity for seniors is a lot higher than the younger population it’s safe to assume that most of the celebrants you saw were seniors.
I wonder how they would respond if offered a hat with five chips in it — four saying “free dinner for you and your party” and the fifth saying “you die”? How many do you think would play the game? Because those are pretty close to the real odds if a senior gets infected.
By the way, the CDC’s current definition of “senior” for the purpose of calculating morbidity rates for the coronavirus is age 50 and above.

HIV was discovered in 1983.
You are right that it was illegal to have sex if you were HIV+ and didn't disclose it. It is STILL illegal in many states. It is also illegal in some states if you don't disclose that you have ANY infectious disease to your sex partners. That presumably also applies to Covid-19.

My issue with this is that those who are congregating in crowds and "having fun" is that no one knows who may be a carrier of the virus. I hope that everyone stays safe and does not contract the virus. Those of us who are more cautious can stay away from crowded restaurants, bars, town squares but still exercise by walking, riding bikes, golfing, etc. But we also have to occasionally go to the grocery or the pharmacy. That is where we are most at risk of catching the virus from those who are not following the governments guidelines about social distancing and wearing masks. Please wear a mask when in the grocery or pharmacy to minimize viral transmission to the more cautious among us. Remember viral transmission can and does occur prior to symptoms. Symptoms are often the result of the immune response against the virus. The virus comes first, the immune response comes second, and the symptoms come third. Hopefully immunity then occurs.

So sick and tired of the doom and gloomers. Most of the mortality is in nursing homes, compromised health wise and ENCLOSED! Open, fresh air is GOOD FOR YOU! The economy is being flushed down the toilet and you want to hide. There is an almost zero mortality rate in children. The villagers who have been control tested for the virus has shown very little contact and not everyone who catches the virus dies! There is no way to eradicate this. We will have to live with it like we do a lot of other diseases. Just because people want to get back to normal does not make them STUPID. The amount of people who want to control others behaviors is amazing. If you want your behavior controlled, move to China, they seem to be good at it.

The Village people made it thru with out many cases or deaths so I am surmising unless a host appears and many get infected the same will continue based on past exposures. Time will tell and until that time these people are out whooping it up. Everyone has a choice even if there are bad ones!!!!

Yes Gators has been really rocking lately. My problem is that they are not keeping their distance and no masks. Who is to say they may be right next to you in a store, etc. And could be a carrier. You will never know.
So they are enjoying themselves and other may have to pay the price. Just saying.
Think before you leap. There are other out there trying their best to stay alive.

So, you are saying the mortality rate is 20%. Really? The mortality rate for Lake County is way under that. We have 367,000 people in Lake County. Now, how many have died? How many are confirmed positive? Who really knows how many have had it and didn't even know it? Exactly! No one know how many have had it! It is your perogative to stay home.

You might want to rethink that 20% number.
Covid 19 death rate percentages by age: (by those with confirmed cases)
80 + 21.9%
70-79 8%
60-69 3.6%
50-59 1.3%
40-49 0.4%
30-39 0.2%
20-29 0.2%
10-19 0.2%
<10 0.001
50% of all Covid 19 deaths appear to be coming from nursing homes (see my previous thread) If you are 50 to 69, living in single family home, your chances of dying are pretty small. The 21.9% number for those over 80 years is probably 80-90% coming from nursing homes.

For crying out loud, some of you REALLY think that you can dictate others' actions. This is a free country, whether you like it or not. If you NEED the gov. nanny to protect you, then maybe you don't deserve to live in this FREE country. If those folks felt it was safe enough to mingle together, that is their problem and their use of their freedom, whether or not you approve. No one has declared martial law and we do not live in the USSR. Get over it. If you don't approve, fine....jot down your disapproval and move on with your life. People like some of you are responsible for seat belt laws, warning labels on tobacco and helmet laws. Things that REQUIRE the gov to dictate to you how you are to live your lives. I grew up with NO seat belts and made it just fine. No one needed a warning label on tobacco to know that it was dangerous and Florida is one of the few states that does not have a helmet law. Some folks can use common sense and manage their own lifestyles and others are just wasting oxygen. The same ones that complain about groups of people having fun are the same ones that complain about lawn ornaments and improper parking. I am surprised that some of you can live so long with all the stress you impose on yourselves over what other folks are doing that you do not approve of. Folks have differing opinions and that is not a bad thing. I wonder how many of you social distance and wear masks during the flu season. A lot of folks die from the flu every year. The handy wipes at the entrance to stores did not start just since the virus pandemic.
That said, I wear my mask and gloves when I go shopping and I try to social distance when it is possible. Do I social distance all the time? No, because I interact with my neighbors across the street. They are out and about every day. I am not. But, I refuse to live in fear. I will take the precautions that suit me. No matter how much you protect yourself, there is always going to be those that either protect themselves better or worst than what you feel is suitable. So be it. It is what it is.
Stress will kill you also. If you do not like what others are doing, then stay home. Maybe the person complaining did not have a legitimate reason for driving past that group of folks that were enjoying life. Maybe that person was taking just as much chance being out and about as they were, when he or she did not need to be out and about. Who knows? I really don't care, because I will concern myself with myself and my spouse, and not everyone else. In my opinion, the world is over populated anyway. Maybe the stupid should make way for the contributors. In my opinion, it is not up to the gov to protect the stupid and it is definitely not my responsibility to take on the job. I have better things to do. I plan on enjoying what time I have left on earth before I get planted under the earth. But, by all means, if you insist on making everyone else's business yours, then stress yourself out and shorten your own life doing so. I am not going insist that you change your lifestyle to comply with mine. I am merely mentioning my opinion and giving a bit of a suggestion. Take it or leave it. I don't need the Constitution as reference to tell me that we live in a free country. For some of us that fought for it, FREEDOM has a flavor that the protected will never taste. I neither wish to control your actions or be controlled by anyone's wishes or opinions. My only concern today is of running out of toilet paper, and that worry is very slight since I have enough to last me a month without having to shop for more. And on a positive note, since we are mostly cloistered at home I have no need to worry about my barber shop reopening soon.
I do take the pandemic seriously. I just do not feel it to be my responsibility to force others to take it seriously.

:ohdear: Luv how the major response from people is that "It is my right", "I can do what I want". There is no where in our Constitution or laws that says you can do whatever you want, whenever you want!!! Where and when has anyone said that the current situations are permanent.
Where's the law that prohibits that person from having a good time? All those folks were aware of the seriousness of the pandemic and all of them decided that they were going to use their own free will and gather to enjoy their time. How do you know there was anyone infected in that group? Personally, I would not join that type of gathering, but I would not prohibit them from doing so. Some people would prohibit others from operating motorcycles, using charcoal grills in their back yards or parking a red car in their drive way, if they thought they could control the situation.

Sorry. I don't buy it. Those people who became infected while isolating themselves, did NOT stay at home. There must be some sort of break down in the understanding of what "Isolation" really means. If their homes were clean of the virus, the virus did not blow in through the open window. Sorry, it just doesn't happen that way.

I bet none of them had the virus and that makes your comment a moot point. How many masks do you see during the flu season? I have never seen one in the Villages, yet the flu takes tens of thousand lives every year. I bet you have seen those handy wipes at the store entrances BEFORE this pandemic. I wonder why. Maybe because of the flu? It is your choice to live in fear. It is not your obligation to force your fear on others.

If it only affected the people involved it would be different but it doesn't. Someone that gets the virus may be the one you come in contact with at a store or maybe the gas pump. I read where a woman got it by touching a keypad at a pharmacy. Don't ask me how they trace these things back...I don't know.
Then she touched her face BEFORE she washed her hands. This virus does not have feet. People move this virus around. It is so easy to protect yourself when you are out of your home. Everyone has to be on the alert to protect themselves. We have been told so many times what to do. Just do it!

A person’s rights stop when they infringe on someone else’s rights. Spreading the virus affects more people than just the person who doesn’t care. In the 70’s people were arrested if they had HIV and had sex without telling their partner. The constitution does not give people the right to do whatever they want if it harms others.
We don't prohibit people from driving automobiles but there are people who shouldn't be driving in the first place due to age, health, or just plain inability to drive safely. Look up the number of fatal accidents that happen every year.
A study by John Hopkins estimates that up to 250,000 people die every year due to medical mistakes by doctors and other medical personnel. The study show says that medical errors are the third highest cause of death in the US.
The HIV arrests you cite is quite a different thing, those people knew they were sick and KNOWINGLY passed on the disease.

This "something" is a dreadful illness. If you are one of the unfortunate to be effected severely, this virus can play havoc with a person's clotting mechanism and cause clots anywhere in the body. This virus also causes multiple organ failure besides the ravaging it does to the lungs. If you are one of the unlucky ones to be severely impacted by this virus, it is a miserable way to die.

they will be in Winn Dixie today breathing on us.
Not if they are wearing a mask. The mask blocks the droplets that are spewed when someone speaks in a normal tone.
I get it. You can not eat and drink with a mask on. Hubby and I celebrated our first breakfast out since this pandemic in Mt. Dora yesterday. We dined outside on a second story balcony. The only other patron was clear on the other side of the balcony about 25 feet away. It was just lovely. We did not wear masks because it really is impossible to eat and drink when wearing a mask.
So, to all you folks who are having a wonderful time eating and drinking and congregating in public establishments....... don't wear a mask. Having said that, please wear a mask when you are indoors in stores and can not easily social distance. That would be just about every indoor space that has aisles including retail stores, grocery stores, warehouses and pharmacies. Is it too much to ask? Only responsible people wear masks in these venues. Thank you for being responsible.

Day 9 of eating out. I must be going to all the right places. Not at any given time has the protocols set in place, not been followed. Up to 10 people per table with 6” distance to next table, is the guidelines. Last time someone posted over a 100 at an establishment, I was there picking up food for a neighbor. I sat there for 15 Waiting, no where close to 40 much less the 100. Those doing drive by’s, might want to stop and count for a better accurate count. But then it would make a good story.

My thoughts on this matter are very simple. Those of you that would like to go back to life as it was to socialize with your friends go to restaurants and attend parties should be tattooed. So when those tattooed people show up at the hospitals they should be refused medical treatment. Hospital staff should treat people that are obeying the rules not ones that put themselves and the medical staff in jeopardy.
So I wonder how many people would be willing to do that?

Nice first post. Refuse treatment, must not be in the medical field. Even if you just shot and killed someone, and were also shot. You still get medical care.
Your theory is flawed. Most do not go to hospital for treatment. They are monitored at home, with no medical staff present. Since I know 11 that contracted Covid while working, none of them were treated at any facility. All have recovered, donating plasma, and back to work.
So how many would be willing to do that, Every Healthcare worker, that puts not only their self at risk, but their family as well. They treat each person the same. Something you have very little knowledge of

Agree. Well written. God bless the essential workers you mention; that the elite and pampered have “allowed” to be so.

Congratulations, you win the idiotic post of the day award :eclipsee_gold_cup::eclipsee_gold_cup:
I'm looking over at my Hippocratic oath hanging on the wall, and it doesn't seem to mention refusing care to sick people. I'd suggest you read it if you can get enough light under your bed.
PS: nice first post, welcome:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

We'll be ready to reopen when people follow guidelines for theirs and others safety.
Freedom is a responsibility not an unearned privilege to do as we please.
Stop acting like spoiled whiny brats who are willing to hurt others and put them at risk!
The SELFISHNESS I see in some of these posts is mind-boggling.
I suggest you read post #15, then read it again.

They did something like this in the late 1930's and early 1940's in Germany.

I wish it were that easy. There are folks who have to keep doctor's appointments and must continue to have diagnostic testing. In those circumstances, staying at home is not a viable option.
You drive in your car or golf cart to the doctor or lab, you won't get the virus while driving. Doctor's offices and labs control entry and only allow 1 or 2 people in at a time and sterilize the things you come into contact with. Your risk is very low.
When you go to the doctor or a lab you are being exposed to all kinds of other illnesses that can prove fatal also. That's why many people go to the doctor or have lab work done, they are sick with something.

[QUOTE=BobnBev;1763786]Drove past RJ Gators (LSL) last night....about 200 people crowded together blocking the sidewalk, drinking and dancing. Guess they are immune from the virus.:ohdear::ohdear::ohdear:[/
Were they overflowing into the street or down the walkway to the radio station? Can’t believe the number. Just like last Friday someone posted there were over 100 people at the bar at City Fire. That’s a bunch of BS. I was there at six to eight and at any point in time there were about twenty. The outside bar area has x number of seats. They cannot exceed the capacity of those seats and will not be served if you are just standing.
It appears the art of fake news has been mastered by some here.

How do you spell slippery slope? One could say the same thing for smokers, drinkers, overeaters, folks who work around dangerous chemicals, people who worry themselves sick, etc.

I find it hilarious that the old people who bitch and moan about younger people living in TV now want us to stay home.
By your logic, if they "bitch and moan about younger people living in TV," they've probably ALWAYS wanted you to stay home.
Not all "old people" feel this way about younger people.
