To the person who left a ding in my new blue SUV in Publix's parking lot, Colony Plaza last week, just to let you know your irresponsible actions left $800-$1,000 in repair cost for me.Thank you very much .

One can see them do it every day in the various parking lots.
They open the door then push it all the way open, and many just kick it open.
When it bangs the vehicle next to them one can hear them grumble as if it was in their way.
Another segment of inconsiderate elders....fortunately they are in the minority.....and that still is too many.

The major reason I tend to park further away from stores so that other cars will normally not be near me.

I do the same thing. Plus, walking is good for our aging bodies.

Give Brice Kelly dent repair a call. (386)216-5185. His work is amazing. I had a MB slk Black and sure enough got a dent. When he was done you couldn't find it. Plus he did a repair where a previous dent was removed but not to his perfection and that was no charge. You'd only be out a call.

parking lots are the second most dangerous areas in villages. The mail station parking lot is the dangerous. I avoid it between 3PM and 6 PM. Store parking lots on windy days are excellent place to pick door dings. the wind blows all the empty carts that the lazy wont return to cart area.

1. If it's JUST a ding (which is an actual term with an actual meaning) then the repair would only cost between $100-200 total.
2. It's possible that it was a shopping cart/buggy/carriage that the wind blew into your car, and an employee or another customer rolled the cart back to the store and had no knowledge of the cart causing damage to your vehicle.
If it's not JUST a ding, then yeah that probably would've been someone being careless, and they should've made some attempt to communicate with you - gone into the store and asked to have "the owner of the car with plates blah blah blah" paged, or put a note on the windshield with their name and number on it, or something.

Agree totally. Plus, like previously said, if you want to avoid dings, park farther away from other vehicles. I have seen people squeeze into spots just to avoid walking more than 6 steps to the store.
A ding is a ding. It happens. Yes, annoying and disheartening on a new vehicle but the world doesnt stop turning.

I know exactly how the owner of his " New " car feels, it happened to me years ago.
It is a NEW Car, expensive, a lot of thought , planning went into the purchase.
I tend to park where the likelihood of someone parking next to me is slim, but every now and then some clunker decides to even though the lot is practically empty.

We had that done to a new car several years and by new I mean less than 6 hours old. I parked at the end of a row and the other driver parked on the grass. When I saw the damage I went back into the store I saw the police officer and asked to have the car owner paged. We all walked to the parking lot and the owner was indignant and claimed she was not responsible. Until of course the office opened her car door and it perfectly matched the damage on my car. Woman was a jerk. Paintless dent removal fixed it. This is how auto dealers do it

A couple weeks ago my girlfriend bought a new Ford F-250 pickup truck. When we got it to her house, she asked me to grab a couple short lengths of 6 x 6 she uses for blocking the wheels of her horse trailer and toss them into the truck bed. One was covered with dried mud, slipped out of my hand, and hit the side of the truck, causing a 2” round dent in her new truck. I felt awful about it and promised to pay for the repair. (Shouldn’t a truck body be stronger than that?) Of course, a year from now, judging from the condition of her last truck, she will have much bigger dents, and she won’t get them fixed.
As for me, I try to park maybe a hundred yards from the store I’m visiting if it is a busy period. I especially avoid tight spaces.
My girlfriend’s mother, who is 85, drives a fancy Lexus. She not only tries to park close to the store—even though she walks three miles a day—but when she wants to back out, she pulls straight back without looking. Last year a guy ran into her while she was doing that. She actually thought that she had the right of way if she was backing out! She argued that he was at fault.

I’ve had more dings in the 8 years we have been here than the entire time before it. Really dinged me off the first couple of times, but I guess now I’ve just accepted it as a part of the cost of living here.

Pretty sure anyone who has ever bought a new car or one in good condition knows the feeling. It's not unique to only select few car owners of specific cars.
But if it's a ding, it's just a ding. Not a big deal. Not even important enough to make the list of "first world problems."
My car was new when I bought it. It was a "lot car." The dealership employees used it to get lunch for the crew and similar. It only had 300 miles on it, total. After driving it off the lot I discovered it already had a ding in the back. The dealership offered free ding repair for the first 90 days. I could never get in touch with the ding guy (it was a subcontract job). The 90 days expired. I got over it by the 100th day.
Really - it's a non-issue.

What is a clunker? Anything under $100,000? There are very few actual clunkers in the villages. The OP’s ding was likely not caused by one. And if it was just a ding, he way overpaid to fix it.

We (esp me) are VERY careful where and how we park. Been in TV for over 6 years - not one ding on our new cars. phew. But, must say, on one of the very windy days earlier this week - opened the car door as usual (no cars next to us) and the wind caught it. But luckily (as usual) I had a hand in the armrest. If I didn't and a car was next to us...BANG!
The TV folks, IMO, are no more inconsiderate with their car doors or shopping carts as anywhere in the USA.

When rather large people push the door open lean on the door to get our as they get out the door slides up and scratches the the side plus a ding. My solution is park far away and get my 10000 steps in so I don’t become
One of them another solution is put rubber molding on your doors just in case

We dread those first dings! Whenever we got a new car, I would hardly drive it. I didn't want to be THE ONE who got the FIRST ding. Spouse would be so mad. Once that was over with, I could relax. LOL

It is surprising since the parking spaces allow for 2 golf carts. They are pretty wide considering that parking spaces for cars where there are no golf carts are probably one foot smaller. Was the ding circular or was it a vertical ding. I would imagine if another car door hit your car it would have a vertical dent. Otherwise I think it might have been a shopping cart.

If you have a good automobile insurance it should cover most of this. These types of issues that are not collision related usually also have a low deductible. Like $250 ? At least check it out!

We're you the person parked askew taking up three spots instead of just one?
I had a shopping cart hit my BMW and also some jerk in his golf cart scratch two circles of paint off of my bumper from screws on his license plate. Really irritating.

I took he OP as just venting a little, so made my own obsevstions from my experience. Did not mean to “no big deal” his concerns. I think we get the point. But it is moot. It is impossible to be sure you will never get a ding. That “should” be possible and people “should” be honest and fess up and pay for their mistakes, but it just doesn’t always happen.

My mustang received a very visible ding that upset me terribly. After reading this blog, I contacted Brice Kelly. He repaired the car today. He is amazing, almost a magician. He restored the door, luster and the result is perfect! Highly recommend. He is reliable, reasonable and cheaper than a psychiatrist!

If you have a small ding with no paint damage the repair will be cheap but if there is paint damage $800 - $1,000 sounds typical to me. We had a jerk ding our door, dented and paint damage, and I was quoted $800 for repair. Our other car suffered a small dent over the rear wheel and it cost $850 for the repair. You can't just paint the ding spot and get it to match the rest of the paint, the body man will have to blend the paint over the entire door so you don't see the difference between the new paint and old.

While I sympathize with you and agree, I have learned from experience that my new car is my total responsibility.
In this demolition derby world, when you buy a new car, you have to assume the risk. There are parents with kids, contractors, bad drivers, stones and litter on the road etc. All will be available to make your new car have patina just like all of the others. You cannot control the actions of others.
So it is up to you to protect the new car. That is called risk mitigation. You wouldn't drive it deliberately into an Ocala national forest trail, unless you were an avid Geocacher. I was and while doing that chose not to buy a new car.
Parking in a public lot is kind of like a forest. You have no control over what happens after you park. And I would not expect some harried mother in a ten year old van, whose kid just dinged the next door car, to go into the stores seeking the owner of the new car that was just dinged. At best , I would hope that she would say "you should be more careful".
So, be as defensive as you can. Did you add sidestrips on the car to protect the finish from inadvertent door openings? How about door edge guards on your doors. Park in areas away from other cars. Look for spaces near curbs where you can protect one side and minimize damage to other side by staying as far from parking line as possible. You are the one with the gold chariot. Don't expect others to worry about your chariot. They may have more pressing thoughts on their mind. Also, if you squeeze your car into a tight space and the owner of the neighboring car comes out to find that he has to be a contortionist to get into his car, you might expect to see some marring to your finish. Finally, be smart enough to not have political stickers on your car.
Good luck
