I don't agree with YOUR exaggerated titles. We all read on this forum and discussed an opinion piece by someone on The New York Times that was looking at us in The Villages as a potentially dangerous area for the virus because of our age.
I think that Governor DeSantis really set his foot down early on and may have spared us more deaths. As to the rest, an observer might wonder why we didn't have a big flare up and more deaths. We do have an older population, and we are the third most populous state in the U.S. but I keep wondering what was the factor? Is it our warm climate?
Personally, I think Governor Cuomo and Governor DeWine did good jobs trying to manage the outbreaks. No one really knew for sure WHAT to expect. They were still floundering in Italy and China trying to figure it out.
We started the quarantine right around March 13th, Friday the 13th. That was really a very short time from the first reported deaths in Wuhan in late November. People were trying to figure out whether it was going to be a hard seasonal virus year at first... I am not a person who believes conspiracy theories. Until someone can prove me wrong, it is a mutation of a nasty virus, heretofore not known to the medical community or mankind.
As we look back it was not handled well...probably because no one really knew what to expect. That is not limited to the U.S. The Prime Minister and the heir apparent to the throne in U.K. both caught Covid-19. Other leaders of countries sickened with it as well.
We still have not sorted it out well. We still have much to learn. Is Kawasaki Syndrome that affects children part of it. How about blood clots in large vessels in younger people?
We don't have many answers. We don't even know what questions to ask, so like most humans ...we taunt each other.
Ugly.

Yikes
New York and several other states forced nursing homes to accept covid 19 patients which has resulted in over 5000 deaths in New York nursing homes alone. That's more than double ALL covid 19 deaths in Florida
Florida did the opposite, and sent them to the hospital immediately. Florida, DeSantis notes, “required all staff and any worker that entered to be screened for COVID illness, temperature checks. Anybody that’s symptomatic would just simply not be allowed to go in.” And it required staff to wear PPE. “We put our money where our mouth is,” he continues. “We recognized that a lot of these facilities were just not prepared to deal with something like this. So we ended up sending a total of 10 million masks just to our long-term-care facilities, a million gloves, half a million face shields.”
I guess if killing grandma and grandpa is doing a good job then you are correct.

Whichever television news channels you watch, you can be certain that what purports to be “news” will be alarmist, meant to rile you up—whatever your political persuasion—and make you angry enough to watch at least until the next advertisement. If you doubt it, think about television weather reports about storms: “This could be the worst storm ever!” The news stations are in it for the money. If it doesn’t have video to go with it, usually they don’t show it. They count on interviews with “man-on-the-street” people who are emotional, as if they knew anything or as if that mattered. They just want to keep you watching—and afraid.
I don’t watch these stations at all unless I’m somewhere where they are on. I have a friend who was hooked on them and filled with anxiety and fear about the virus. A couple weeks ago she decided to stop watching and just read the papers. Now she feels much less anxious.
As for The Villages, our salvation is due to our living one or two to a house, with plenty of places to walk or ride and get some heat, sun, and exercise. That, combined with having so many businesses and activities closed or limited. Whether we want to or not, we have found social distancing quite easy. If New York City was spread out the way The Villages is, its death rate would be more like ours. (Of course, maybe it would be spread out all the way to Niagara Falls.)

Look at the quoted exaggerated or totally out of reality articles on the Media that the above poster was kind enough to provide, it shows the totally slanted leftist view of the media portrayals of Doom and Gloom!!
Our Governor did the right moves while bothers did not, if I recall, Trump sent a Hospital ship completely loaded to New York and Cuomo decided to send Covid 19 patients to Nursing Homes and the Ship remained empty, it was a bad decision, but politicians do not admit failure only promise hope which they never deliver!!!!!!!!

Did Governor Desantis do a good job handling the virus??? I think he did up till he decided it was time to reopen. I think he is moving a little to fast and it may come back to bite him and us. Everyday I get a news article which states the number of new cases and deaths. The numbers are still increasing every day. They are not increasing as bad as they did several weeks ago but they are increasing. I hope we have made the right decision about opening because if the governor was wrong and the numbers start to spike the next closings and lock down will be much harder than the one we just went through. Believe me as a former owner of a small business that employed 10 people I get what being closed does to a small business. I am all for trying to open but it should be slower than the pace we are at now until the number of cases and deaths are not going up as they are now.

...what would you have predicted about Florida? If I had to pick One state I thought would get slammed by this it would be Florida. The potential to have been devastating Had to be the highest in the country.
the actual percentage of deaths In this state is 85% are over the age of 65.
I don’t know why we were spared, but predictions about Florida made sense to me.

Whatever you hear or read in the media....Take it with a grain of salt.
When you hear what they are saying …..listen to what they are NOT saying.
And while they sensationalize everything, they want you to be GLUED to the television.
Why?? It's so they can make $$$$ from their advertisers.
They always want to be FIRST to report something new. And in doing so, they almost get some fact wrong, totally destroying the integrity of the report. As a previous poster said, Nobody proof reads anymore.
While the Covid-19 situation IS serious, I think that the government's response was a knee jerk reaction and they for the most part, over-reacted.
Common sense and personal cleanliness is all the protection you need.

I know I have been singing a minority song Covid-19 started. Being an old dude, I remember 1968, even though I spent the year in Viet Nam.
Over 100,000 Americans and over one million worldwide, died from the Hong Kong flu. Like corona virus, it was a horrible thing and people died. We did what we could to stay safe and went on with our lives. Six months later we had 400,000 in the filth of Woodstock, with no ill effects.
I'm not minimizing, at all, the tragedy of death! I am lamenting that we became a socialistic, and in many ways cowardly country! We have already spent TRILLIONS of our kids dollars and destroyed this country's economy with a needless "lock-down" that will take MORE than a generation to recover. The bankruptcies and deaths caused by the lock down will dwarf the benefits.
A TINY example of the side effects: EVERY month 150,000 plus Americans get diagnosed with a form of cancer. We are at the point of medical expertise that early diagnosis of most cancers result in remission success and those folks can lead a full life. For the last two months virtually NO Americans were lucky enough to get that early diagnosis because of individual fear of going outside to the doctors or simply because hospitals, clinics etc. were closed for all but emergencies and corona virus treatment.

Can anyone guess how many people have died since this started because China is good and Cuomo has done a great job?
I guess you mean me.
I think The governors of New York and Ohio and Florida all did a good job with the situation they had at hand.. They all shut things down immediately. I think in NYC the Virus had already exposed many, many, people even before people were aware of it. Governor Cuomo did shut it down. Shut the Subways down. Told people to stay inside. Shut the Airlines down right away and sadly more than 20,000 people died anyway. I don't know what he was thinking when he sent convalescing Covid-19 people to Convalescent centers with older people. That was a bad call, we all know now. DeWine and DeSantis shut it all down right away, shut the airlines down, etc. etc. etc. DeSantis didn't shut the Churches down and that could have been a disaster but it wasn't.
I personally don't believe that the virus was manufactured to be a get back at Trump. I don't think it was an on purpose event. Scientists can trace origins of mutations. But for one country to deliberately infect the whole world is very hard to believe, unless we throw everyone into the bad and good qualifications of politics.
I could be wrong. It would not be the first time. I am NOT a medically trained person. I was a preschool teacher with education in child development and psychology. I am not a medical person. My views on education have changed over the years and I don't place as much trust as I did when I was young in behavioral psychology. I am leaning toward thinking that a lot of our personality traits are genetic. I can think whatever I want to. I am Free, Republican and eighty years old. But I am not an Extreme Republican. I don't like extreme political views on either side. You can disagree with me.
I just think that GoodLife is incorrect at times just like anyone else. Like me. And possibly you too Bmit. Does MIT in your name stand for Massachusetts Institute of Technology? If so, WOW.

Probably the only point I would disagree with, is the, 'we are spending trillions of our kids dollars.'
Our kids are now running the world, and spending their own dollars.
Our generation is the one that picked up, and stood the world back on its feet after WW2.
We worked and spent our dollars giving them the great lifestyle they are enjoying now.
No guilt trip here!

Governor Cuomo has been lionized by the media for his daily pressers about the coronavirus in NY. He's reading speeches, of course, since there's a full-screen graphic ready to pop on screen as soon as he mentions the topic/sentence. But, no matter.
Cuomo and Governor Murphy from NJ should be answering very tough questions about their policies regarding nursing home residents and LTC residents re: Covid-19. In both states, nursing homes were forced to take back nursing home patients who tested positive.
How did that work out? Horrifically. Cuomo's been trying to dance around the topic whenever he's asked about it. Yesterday, he specifically blamed Trump because - he said - NY made its decision to force nursing home residents who tested positive back to their nursing homes because of the CDC guidelines that were in force.
Funny how Governor DeSantis didn't do that. Was DeSantis in violation of CDC guidelines? Of is this just another example of Cuomo thinking he can do no wrong, and that no one will actually call him out on it?
Thankfully, there finally is some growing concerns for investigations into what went down in NYS, and why. Will Cuomo actually pay a price for his policy? I wouldn't hold my breath. But there's lots of relatives of deceased NY nursing home residents who want answers, and some politicians are taking notice. There's a bit of an increase on the press side, but that's not to be counted on.

As we excitedly wait for a Coronavirus vaccine to keep us safe again we must not forget that 45,000 - 65,000 die in the US every year from Influenza even WITH a flu Vaccine.. I wonder where those numbers would be without a vaccine, I myself haven't had the flu in 15 years or so since taking the flu shot.. I think the mortality rate will continue to decline as we accept the responsibility of protecting ourselves and not expecting the Government to do it for us..

Apparently you didn't notice the dates on those selective clips. All BEFORE things got serious. In the same time frame we had WHO saying "No human to human transmission" and "Not going to be a pandemic". Also Fauci stating "Americans have nothing to worry about". Not one of the clips you listed had anyone saying it was a hoax.

Well we are at double that death rate in just two months vs 12 months and as we 'responsibly' press to open up for political reasons, the US will be in have a lot more deaths. I hope you are right, but I am a realist.

I commend you for admitting your error. Most here never do this. I am giving you a star for honest behavior.
However, your first comment in this thread sort of accused me of posting exaggerated titles or headlines. In fact I took those Florida scare headlines direct from the media. You should know by now I don't make posts without backup.
“A gold star,” you say. Gimme a break. That has to be one of the most arrogant, condescending remarks I have ever seen on TOTV.
As far as your backup goes, you pick and choose whatever fits your political leanings. Cutting and pasting and linking become meaningless because the internet will belch up anything you want to believe — and, btw, many of your thread titles are a little on the tabloid-y side.
Also, I do not think awarding yourself bragging rights is appropriate. Stringing together the thoughts of others just because they bend your way is not an accomplishment. No “gold star” for you.
(Ironically, I probably will get reported and this post deleted while the on-and-on leaflet drops continue, even though that political tone gets louder every day. I have got to stop looking at TOTV. At least I am doing so less and less.)

Should have mentioned that this is your opinion, based on the facts that substantiate what you want them to. Nothing wrong with that, only that there are many that will be on the other side using the facts that substantiage what they want them to. Whatever is done their will be consequences, some won't see their grandkids grow up, some will lose their jobs but most importantly, we will all be inconvienenced to some level and that is enough to take risks. The only truth will be in hindsight.

Ugly. That's pretty much it in a nut shell:icon_wink:

Sorry, but you are not a realist at all.
We (The US) are flagrantly exaggerating the Corona Virus deaths. Just two quick examples: Google the CDC web site and see the actual four page instructions for filling out death certificates. It includes such exact instructions as "...if it is probable or even possible that the subject had covid-19 ...." count them. No tests or autopsy required. Two years ago we had 81,000 deaths from flu. Last year 36,000. Look up this year's numbers. They are ZERO! Any flu like symptoms are being classified as corona virus! The approved hospital reimbursement for a Covid-19 patient is $19,000. Routine flu reimbursement is capped at $6,000. Which one do you think that the struggling hospitals are going to use?

I just looked up this year's numbers. Estimated deaths from Influenza is between 24,000 and 62,000, per the CDC website.
Estimated from last year was not 36,000, it was 34,200.
Estimated from the year before was 61,099, not 81,000.
The estimates are more specific after the data can be thoroughly examined, and since this year's flu season just ended a few weeks ago, it can't be any more specific yet.
Tone down the hyperbole, especially if you want to make statements that sound like facts, but have no actual facts to back them up.
You can find all this information on the CDC website.

So you are saying that the current administration who is in charge of the CDC is lying to us. Regurgitation of comments from a Fox News contributor on the Laura Inghram show is your argument? A world conspiracy to get Trump out of office and rip off the government.
So yes, I am a realist. By the way, those comments didn't quite check out. At least this organization sources their facts.

Quarantine the main stream media? That's the best suggestion I've ever heard on this forum, and this is first time I've posted anything. I just had to agree in print.
Quarantine the politicans!
