Questions about bug zappers: Are they allowed? Needed? Effective? A noise or light nuisance to your neighbors?

I don't see the need.

The answer that till get here will be check your deed restrictions.

Frankly our homes are near each other, noise carries.

If you really feel the need for one I would research a non zap zapper. They use a vacuum system and a black light. Quiet.

I have one on each side of the Lanai. When it gets dark I get my folding chair and crack open a Pabst and listen to the frying. I am not sure what the neighbors dislike the most the bug zapper or my cigar. Or it could be my continuous George Jones music.

I don’t know much about bug zappers other than they make noise and if you live close to neighbors, I wouldn’t advice anything that makes constant noise during the night while people try to sleep - like wind chimes.

I’m from Florida and bug zippers are effective. I suggest you call ARC to ask if you Can install one. If installed you’d want it away from your neighbors, so they don’t complain.

I use one out back of our house when it isn't raining. A lawn specialist told me that certain moths that lay eggs in the lawn which hatch and become cutworms that eat the roots and kill your grass. I clean dozens of these moths out of it daily. It also keeps the mosquitoes down. Additionally, it lights up the very dark backyard a bit better for security.

Mine isn't noisy. The slight popping sound can't be heard inside unless you have your window open and who does that this time of year. Mine is right outside our bedroom window and don't notice it. It kills bugs that lay eggs in the lawn and mosquitoes as well as lights up a very dark backyard.

Grandson and I used to catch flies to throw in the zapper, just to hear the sizzle.
Sad I know, but fun!

I installed one outside my house in the mountains of Pennsylvania some years ago. It killed thousands of mosquitoes, probably bringing them from far away. But it also killed large, beautiful Luna moths and other large and lovely moths. I didn’t even know we had Luna moths! So I disconnected it.

We got a plague of Japanese beetles eating our grapes. I put up traps. The trap bags filled so fast that I tied a 50 gallon plastic bag to the trap, and the beetles fell into that, gallons of them. Then a bear came, ripped into the bag, and gorged on those stinking beetles. I think, again, that the trap actually attracted beetles from far away.

Is it possible that your zappers are drawing insects from several hundred yards away? Thanks! But maybe you are drawing them from nearby lakes, too.

At one time it was determined they attracted more bugs to the area and therefore to the zapper. Maybe they've improved.

They do not kill mosquitoes, they can kill beneficial bugs.

I've had 'em up north. They're not needed here.

you have a screened lanai and most likely a 'postage size' lot, and you are close to your neighbors

what the heck do you need a bug zapper for

do you really plan to sit outside after dusk?
