Are you kidding? You can play Mah Jong 12 hours a day about 6 days a week here !

What I would like to know is where is the "friendliest" place to go and learn, if you have NEVER played b4 and know nothing about it???

THAT is a very good question. Seems many are very serious and don't want to be bothered with learners--and already have their own 4 some.
I am a brand new learner and some very nice people in my neighborhood taught me. I love it, but am uneasy with those who are expert and have played for years.
I think there is a class taught at one of the rec centers--also at lifetime learning. Best idea is to be taught personally. Really need 4 people to a table to learn.

Maybe this can help. If it doesn't help directly with your mah jongg question, it is still very informative. If the link doesn't open correctly, just copy and paste it in your browser search window.
Page 42 is the mah-jongg clubs.

There are game websites where you can learn to play any kind of game.
Search Yahoo Games and you will come up with almost every game there is and with Mah Jong with directions and where you can play with live people all over the world. Or, you can choose to play with robots if you don't feel confident to play live.
Try the site, it's great. I love to play live bridge and cribbage and Mah Jong Solitaire.
Here's the link and if the link doesn't work, then merely copy/paste the following to the Search engine: Yahoo! Games - Games and Online Games
or games.yahoo.com

A lovely woman teaches MJ on Tuesdays at Laurel Manor and Friday's at Chula Vista and I believe she also teaches one day at Colony but I'm not sure which day. Her name is Joan and she is a legend in the MJ community. She frequently has two tables of beginners and has the patience of Job. The nice part it is, as the players become more proficient they move to other tables and play regular games with their peers. Easy way to learn the game. The games begin at 12 noon but it pays to arrive by 11:30 since it gets busy.
