artist question

I have a friend who is joining me in The Villages next week. She does a lot of different types of art. Do I remember that we have a kiln for artists to use? If so where is it located. Also, pottery, where is this done in The Villages. I would like to show her what artist things (can you tell I'm not an artist?) we have to offer here. Thank you for the help.

I believe they have a kiln and do pottery over at Lake Miona, but don't know if just anyone can use it. I suspect you have to be in a class or under supervision of some sort. The Villages Learning College offers a ton of art classes in all types of media, and there are a lot of other artist offerings in the rec guides. It is really wonderful here if you're into creative art. I've taken a variety of watercolor and acrylic classes.

Taj is right. I know of one general art class that meets on Mondays at noon at the SeaBreeze rec center. (The rec center is a pretty stop all on its own.)

There are art classes in session at Colony Cottage at ten on Tuesday and Thursdays. That is another rec center that is fun to show a visitor.

For the times for all of the other classes check the Recreational news available for free at all rec centers. I THINK there is a kiln at both Colony and Seabreeze too, but I believe that only residents may take classes except at the LifeLongLearning College and that is open to non residents. (But in that case one must sign up and pay for a series of classes in advance.) The classes at the rec centers are free to residents.

Thanks for the answers. I just want to SHOW her the kiln and other neat offerings in the arts that we have. She used to work as a potter so I'd love to show her any areas that have wheels for people who live here to use. Not that she would use them as a guest but perhaps I could get her move here someday.

Amazing Glaze in Summer Trace might have a kiln. I have not stopped in there yet but it is a place me and my wife want to visit for some projects.

Also save a copy of the Thursday Recreation News for her to look at. It shows all of the clubs and there are quite a few painting and pottery clubs that are offered.

Hi jdsl,
Several of the rec. centers have potters wheels and kilns! You can check in the Recreation News link that Z provided to see when pottery is available at each of these rec. centers.

A room is reserved in blocks of time for potters, such as 9-noon on Friday. If that's not a convenient time for you, pottery will be offered on a different day and time slot at a different rec. center.

During those times when rec. rooms are reserved for pottery, you do NOT need to be in a class. Other than the potters wheels, clay cutting tables and kilns, you do need to have your own supplies such as clay, glazes and potters tools. There are closets with shelves where your supplies can be stored. The closets also have designated shelves for pottery to dry before glazing and firing.

Although all potters clean up after themselves, a designated voluteer is responsible for opening and setting up the room for pottery and for leaving the shared equipment and the room spotless for the room's next reserved activity.

I think your visitor just might be blown away!
