The most common test of cognitive function which is given as a screening test to people who are older or have suffered a neurological insult is the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. It is absolutely not an intelligence test. Rather it is a screening test with a cutoff defining normal vs do further evaluation. So a low score means you need more evaluation and a normal score means you do not have evidence of dementia as measured by this test. A high score means you do not have evidence of dementia. It does not mean in any way that you are smart.
For fun you can take the test online. It is not the same as having it administered in a clinical situation so do not take a passing score as meaning you have no concerns. Nor should you take a failing score as proof of a problem. But I thought many might wish to see what the test entails.

Interesting, Blueash, thanks. I'd definitely have trouble drawing that cube, but my spatial skills have always sucked so that's not new.
The neurologists I've seen have short versions of cognitive tests they give in the office and I always have to remind myself to CONCENTRATE ON THE FOUR WORDS because they will come up again!

I shouldn't help on the test, but to draw a cube, just draw a square, then draw another square slightly overlapping. Connect the corners. The Montreal has five words to remember but you only need to get four correct to score full points on that section

Apple, Penny, Table! Does that ring a bell at The Villages Health Office? Drawing a picture of the clock is another favorite. Test, Test, Test. I like it!
The first time I was tested I was concerned that they found something. I'm happy they are just looking after my well being. Good Job!

First time TV health caught me off guard with the three important words since my mind was on conveying a few new issues I wanted to discuss since the last visit. But being the quick learner I believe I am, the next visit I was greeted with "orange, dime, sofa". When quizzed at the end of the session and asked to repeat the three words I quickly replied I wouldn't give you a dime for that ugly orange sofa. PA told me I cheated. I said oh did I - I think I aced the purpose of the test.

I aced it, but the last few questions were really hard.

I’m guessing Villagers who wear masks score much higher than those who do not.

This test is too hard. For instance, counting back from 100, also remembering 5 words after all the other questions, I can't pass that and I certainly dont have Alzheimer's. This test is nothing but frustrating to many of our elder citizens.

The test is hard or easy according to how your brain is wired. I am a words person so I did great until they wanted me to count back from 100 by 7's .,, thanks Blueash I went to bed last night counting backwards:ohdear: On the other hand, my husband is a numbers person and he aced the counting part and had a problem with remembering the words. One test does not fit all.

I used to be a nurse anesthetist with a pretty good sense of humor. I never told people to count backwards from 100 when I started putting them to sleep unless I wanted to mess with them, and then threw in “by 7s!!! One 18 year old patient just looked up at me when I said that and said “I went to Fairborn HS!!!” Apparently FHS is not known for their academics!!! 🤣🤣🤣

What would be interesting is to see any decline over time. If I couldn't do some of the tasks in my 20s, who cares if I can't do them in my 60s.
What I have always been is a sucker for brain teaser type quizzes!

I really hope you aren't driving that boat behind you because if you can't do those simple things, you could never drive that boat.

Yea that's a pretty basic test! I just missed one word of recall when the 5 words had to be remembered after a few minutes. Still don't want to be President. ;)

you should try the test after 7 concussions over my lifetime. . . that's me, and I am pre-disposed to dementia for that reason. Can I do numbers? piece of cake. . jeopardy, they never have the specialty topics in which I would excel, otherwise, I win about $5 if I am in the green. Long term memory works ok, its the within the last day or two which finds keys in the refridgerator, and frozen foods in the bathroom. . . ugh!
mostly all sports injuries. . .

So true.
Sports UK have brought in strict laws regarding concussions, and not before time.
The hits in rugby are so hard now, from players so huge and heavy, they need protecting from themselves.
Back in the day of my rugby playing, they soaked your head with a cold sponge, and sent you back into the game.
Sometimes after a whack, you could not remember even playing!
Touch wood I seem OK, but a lot of lads had strokes at quite a young age.
