LA Times panic porn article about The Villages

Starts out with this catchy headline:

With a COVID-19 death every 8 minutes, this Florida community fears who will be next

WOW! Covid deaths every 8 minutes! Sounds awfully scary for one commuinity

Reading the article, they "explain" the headline.

A record 173 Floridians died from the virus Thursday, an average of more than one every eight minutes.

That's not really true either. 173 death certificates were turned in Thursday, but only 20 happened on Thursday. The rest were from earlier dates. Yes that Thursday total will go up, but explaining this would ruin that catchy headline, which is what most people will remember from the article.

News of rising infections arrive with unnerving frequency

Hmmm, sounds bad, lets check the stats for Sumter county.

Percent positive of new cases vs # of tests has dropped to 1.4% from a high of 13.5% a week ago. Total new cases per day is averaging 21 per day last 3 days, down from 41 a week ago. They must be talking about Florida as a whole, not The Villages, but they don't tell you that.

National media loves to bash TV and print panic porn like this, you know why. A more accurate headline would be:

Florida community composed of high risk individuals appears to beat the odds with very low case and death numbers.

So that's why my CA relatives and friend have been calling.....yikes, the great newspapers/reporters haven't changed a bit! Add the drama and they will believe

I agree, the headline was bogus...you had to read the whole article to determine what the truth of the matter was. Many of the reports appearing in the media today seem to really be more about sensationalism and headlines than anything else

oh for the days of Walter Cronkite and Huntley Brinkley, when the news really was reported as the news and not some spin job

we all need to just play it safe, know what the risks are and manage the risks that you choose to take

Guess my sister in NJ will be calling soon to ask how we are.

Wonder why TV are always shown in a bad light in the media?

"And thats the way it is '. Cronkite would choke if he were around today.

And now he is rolling around in his grave

Until the hospitals stop getting extra pay for covid-19 deaths we will really never know the real numbers. Covid/protest, let's ruin the USA.

Do you have some factual information backing this up?

I just read 992 positive Covid cases and 25 deaths for Sumter county. That is just The Villages. So who knows the exact numbers they never say. I think if it was going to hit the villages, it would have already! I think we have less cases here then orlando
