may have missed it but was wondering if it is true by medical docs that it is safe to swim ,play volleyball or walk in our pools ?? doesn't seem safe if people spit, sneeze, exhale water into pool?? they say it safe because it has chlorine but i thought our pools used salt ??

I believe the salt is used to create chlorine in the pools.

If anyone is concerned about pool use, They just don’t use them.

It's safe. I play water volleyball four days a week at least. We are still alive and having a great time.

Salt in the pools convert to chlorine.

Salt is a compound of Sodium and Chlorine. Sodium chloride. NaCl. In a salt water pool, water dissolves the salt so that chlorine can float around killing things. The alternative is pouring in chlorine bleach or using powdered product that releases chlorine when it dissolves. Salt is a lot cheaper, and, I guess, gentler. (I’m not sure.) But the salt concentration is much less than in the ocean. I’m not even sure if it tastes salty. However, it IS strong enough to kill bacteria and viruses, and it doesn’t take long to do it. The process of doing that (or being exposed to sunlight, etc.) uses up chlorine, as I recall, which is why people test the water and add more salt if necessary.

With social distancing, you should be essentially risk free in an outdoor pool, even with spit and mucous and pee. You would be at much greater risk at, say, the average neighborhood pool in the Bronx on a summer afternoon with several hundred kids in the water at once and more lying all around the edge. But that’s not the situation here.

If they never empty the pools but keep adding salt would think that the salt concentration goes up and up.

How do they control salt concentration?

My concern too. I do water classes with plenty of distance or swim laps..all seem safe to me.

Right? And they are on top of each other. We went to check it out. The pool is huge and they have them huddled together. 6 people on each team. You can Hardly move! They should make the courts bigger. But yea, I think that is why so many people are putting their own pool in. The bad stuff I hear about activities at the pool. Seems worse than kids. I don’t have to swim that bad.

No one knows what’s in the pool! I was told salt then told only a few pools have salt. Some pool attendants didn’t know others went to check and came back to say no one had a clue.
Most have chlorine was the final consensus. I’ve been in a pool every day for 2 months, everyone is social distancing with no issues.

Of course there are those who know what is in the pools. The rec assistants would not be who I would ask.

I'm no pool expert, but Google helps:

I saw several bags of calcium hypochlorite next to the pool filtration equipment at the Cattail pool. Here are some facts about the chemical:

Fast-acting Calcium Hypochlorite chlorine granules provide 68% available chlorine for your pool.

Granules can be used in swimming pools, spas and hot tubs.

Provides powerful, effective sanitizing power for all needs.

Kills bacteria, algae and other organic contaminants.

Clears cloudy water or dull water appearance.

Suitable for residential or commercial pool treatment.

Vinyl pools should pre-dissolve Cal-Chlor into a bucket of water.

I swim/exercise several times a week and it's very rare to see anyones head go under water.😀

Salt water pools use the salt to create chlorine as the water is pumped through the pool equipment’s hydrolizer. As the water goes back into the pool the chlorine starts breaking down back into salt. The water is cleaned without having to have high amounts of chlorine constantly in the water. So the water itself should be relatively safe, but it’s people you need to worry about. You still need to social distance in or out of the pool since masks are not likely being used there. Be safe!

How crowded are the water aerobics classes and water volleyball?
Do you need to wait long to get a spot?

Old people leak more than toddlers.

That is what the water filtration system is for. Plus, there is a LOT of water to dilute anything that may "leak" into the water.

There is a big filtration system that does all that. I trust the system to get it right.

I swim/exercise several times a week and it's very rare to see anyones head go under water.😀

I swim laps (Freestyle stroke) and my face is always in the water with the exception of every third stroke when I take a very quick breath. I exhale while my face is in the water.

Dont use pool if you are sickly. Stay home. 80% will have no symtoms and sail through Covid with no problem. 15% will have symptoms similary to a cold or flu. 5% may need to see a doc or go to hospital. So, let the 95% live.

Well, don't use the pools, but leave us, the ones who do use them alone. PERIOD!

Since you’re at a distance from the pool itself, you can’t tell that the players are at least 5 feet apart from each other and we’re outside. We are not on top of each other and, believe me, we can move. I play WVB and all the players are very conscious about this virus and keeping each other safe.
