Does the fire department still replace batteries in smoke detectors and clean out dryer ducts?They have temporarily ceased replacing batteries due to COVID. I can replace batteries for a couple Miller Lites.

The FD has never cleaned dryer vents. For this, I highly recommend Covenant Enterprises, Desmond Harris, 352-308-9243.

Desmond will replace your smoke detector batteries for you when he cleans the dryer duct, I am not sure if he charges extra for that.

Depending upon the age of your smoke detectors if they are over 10yrs old then it would be time to replace them. We replaced ours in May and bought the newer model which has 10yr lithium batteries in them hence in 10yrs we replace the whole unit but no more changing batteries every year.

If they do in fact last 10 years will be a whole new generation of smoke detectors.

You can install lithium batteries in any smoke detector. But, even the cheaper alkaline batteries have a 10 year shelf life. The battery is only used as a backup when there is a power outage. The smoke detectors are powered by the house electrical system.

Should the batteries on a 10yr detector happen to go bad then the low battery alarm would go off and the manufacturer 10yr warranty would kick in.
