I like having a new car, and it's time to upgrade. I'd like to buy something local here in the Villages and surrounding area. I don't know anything about the local dealers. I'd appreciate any input, or experiences you've had.

My theory is that the dealer really doesn't matter. Research what car you want, do your homework on how much the car is worth, and locate the car in the local area dealer inventory online. Then, go to the dealership and test drive the car. You should be able to buy the car for the KBB.com or Edmunds.com fair value price from any dealer. If you depend on the dealer to advise you and play games with you, you will get ripped off. Car dealers hate me because I refuse to negotiate with them. After you buy the car, you can have the warranty work done at any dealership.

To get your best deal you may want to check out this web site. I've used James Bragg's program in the past he has an interesting way of car shopping and you may just get the best deal you can. You do need to focus in on the brand, model car and options.

His program is involved but he says the best time to put out bids to dealerships is the last week of the quarter. The theory is with manufacturers kickbacks based on a predetermined quotas will have the dealer sell well below cost if they are short of meeting their quota. They stand to make lots more $$$ when they meet their quotas so come crunch time at the end of the quarter they will make a deal that benefits the consumer. He also writes you never enter the showroom. You basically do a write in/email program that tells the dealer in the next week I’m going to buy a car and I would like you to bid and give me a price. Of course you have to contact 3 or more dealers with your bid requests. Even if you don’t use his service it’s worth the $49.95 to get the materials you need to purchase one car, if you need more info on other than a single vehicle choice it will cost you an additional $15 per additional car.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with James Bragg but like his program it works and it could save you some $$$/.

I have used Nahas Chevrolet on route 44, just outside Brownwood for my last two vehicles. No high pressure and good service. I just completed my recent purchase 2 weeks ago. They have excellent discounts on some models. I deal with Scott Moll. He is very knowledgeable. I purchased an Equinox SUV. 😉

I have been satisfied with Phillips Toyota in Leesburg.

You also might consider using a car buying service -- Sam's Club offers one and there are several online. I used the one through USAA.

Even if you enjoy the give and take of haggling in person or want to trade in your existing car, you can still go directly to the dealer's website and get a firm price quote for a specific model.

My best car buying e experience was at Off lease Only.
Off Lease Only Find the Best Used Cars for Sale | Used Car Search (https://www.offleaseonly.com//used-cars/certified_true/)

Low doc fees. This link is to their cars that have not been in an accident. Many of the rest of the inventory has minor to severe damage but they have been fixed and give you a report on it. I prefer pre-owned and save thousands. Some with remaining factory warranty

I did my research on the cars I was interested in. I went to car dealers in Leesburg and Ocala. The salesmen I dealt with at all dealerships seemed to think I should pay sticker price or after consultation with their boss they could take off $150 or a few dollars more. I refused to get ripped off so I put buying a new car on the back burner since there was no rush. One day I went to Phillips Buick on 441 to look not buy. Phillips took thousands off sticker price and Offered such a FAIR price on my trade in ( which other dealers lowballed) I had no choice but to buy the car. Phillips has other brand car dealerships around the Villages. I would highly recommend Phillips based on my experience.

First off, know what car you want or at least narrow it down. Do your research. Know which extras youll agree to since they will pressure you to add all. Know your price limit. If trading your car in then know the trade in value. Dont be bullied. Stick to what you want. Be prepared to walk away. Some will let you leave but call you within a few days with a better offer. Others wont let you get out of the parking lot. Its all a game. Enjoy!

If a Lincoln becomes an interest and you look into the cars at Plaza Lincoln, be very careful with their sales practices. From the top person to the bottom, they pulled numerous shady practices. Seniors Against Crime has a folder full of complaints on them. Mine is one of them.

I must say, I love my Corsair and the Service Department has been very good.

Keyscales Ford and Phillips Buick are two long-time dealerships then our fair in their dealings. I can also say that will all their service departments are more expensive than local mechanics they get the job done. I cannot recommend the Lincoln dealer on 441 in Leesburg and I think the service department cuz overboard on pricing. Has several others have said do some basic research on the internet before you go as for what your trade-in is really worth and remember they have to mark up Used Cars 3 to $4,000 to make profits so don't expect retail on your used car also get your loan in advance over the internet because that's the main place dealers make money these days. If you currently have good credit it should be in the neighborhood of 4% or so. If you're planning on paying cash don't tell them until the rest of the deal is totally done and you have everything in writing signed off by the sales manager.

I have bought many cars at Phillips Buick over the years (12 cars) and I work with Blake Kelly. No pressure but know what your car is worth and be willing to negotiate . I also buy mine at year end as in the last few days of the year many promotions Usually come out to meet year end quotas .... so try the end of the quarter/year or go see Blake, meet him, and ask him to notify you when the promotions are deeper which would benefit you more . He’s great to work with .

Lots of good advice here (except for the inane comment about gas prices) but I would add one more thing - require the sales person to talk about "out the door" price rather than the price of the car. That way you won't be surprised when they add on the "dealer prep" fee and the "document" fee and the extra charge for floor mats or whatever.

The whole Bill Bryan dealership in Fruitland Park is great. Buying our new Chrysler Pacifica there a couple of years ago was the best car buying experience of our lives. Customer service shines here and Ill Park ( yes, Ill as in “sick” ) was a wonderful salesman. He knows his vehicles, inside and out, and made the whole experience fun. We are treated like a part of the Bill Bryan family and this is the first time we have ever felt that our business was important and appreciated. If we ever decide to trade this beautiful van Ill Park is who we will work with.

Just bought a 2020 model in March. Found vast disparities between dealers in Ocala versus those South of the Villages. Trend in Ocala seems to be to add thousands to the sticker price. Typically around 5K. So you see $250 for mudflaps, $400 for a flashing brake light addition, $60 for a first aid kit etc. One dealership even include one year of credit monitoring in the extended sticker, while another added $2,000 for "additional dealer mark up", hard to believe but it was on the added sticker.

Ended up buying car in Clermont which only had the factory sticker on the car and got discount from there.

So once you decide on a model, deal with the dealers that have only the MSRP sticker on the car and not one or two more added on for high priced options you don't want or need. Don't waste your time on any of the Ocala dealers.

I agree but buying in the last week of a month can produce big savings! Finally it’s important to compare apples to apples so when getting quotes on pricing make sure ea car is equipped the same.

I have never seen a dealer who wouldn't accept the KBB.com or Edmunds.com fair value price. The key is to ignore all of the add ons and offer to buy the car at the fair value price. They can take it or leave it. But, when you start to walk out, they will accept the price. There is no reason why they shouldn't. As soon as you start to negotiate with them, you have lost and you will pay too much. I tell the dealer upfront that I will only discuss the bottom line, out-the-door price. Also, getting mad, arguing, or lying to the dealer doesn't work. I tell them how I calculated my offer, and they can sell me the car, or I will just buy it somewhere else.

Gasoline is the cheapest thing about owning an automobile! Most cars get about 20 mph (+/-) and with gas less than $2.50/gal that allows travel for about 12½ cents per mile. With the average auto useage in TV at 10,000 per year, $1250 for fuel....probably cheaper than the insurance on a new car.

depending on the type of car you'd like, a previous poster mentioned dealerships along the 441 line. since we've been here, i've used plaza lincoln, specifically a gal named Christie in the service dept. she's the best-won't try to sell packages you don't need, & is very upfront re: repairs, estimates & time spent repairing the car. she also impressed me with her intimate knowledge of what the actual issues might be when faced with a mechanical issue.

Just bought my third new car from Phillips Buick GMC; it was the second one from Matt Wilcox. Good guy.
I prefer GM products because of OnStar. In the past, I have also purchased 1 vehicle at Key Scales Ford, outstanding service department. A few years ago, we experienced a shady warrantee issue at Plaza Cadillac. The "new" car they sold us was not new after all. We caught them in a lie when the 36 month warranty was activated several months before the date of sale and therefore ran out before our 3 year anniversary mark. Apparently, the car had been used in several promotional events, which was not disclosed to us.

I second Phillips. I bought a Pacifica at Phillips Chrylser of Ocala. This is a relatively short drive from the villages. Bill Bryant in Leesberg would not deal at all but I did 95% of my negotiations via email and phone with the internet department and Marc (my salesperson) at Phillips of Ocala. It was a very easy transaction and when I finally went to the dealership we had one small hiccup which Marc immediately fixed and away we drove with the Pacifica at a great price.

USAA has an excellent car buying service. And, the same service will allow you to accurately value your used car trade in.

I recently purchased a new car, using my 2016 Honda as a trade. USAA saved me thousands off MSRP and I traded the Honda to the same dealer at the amount specified by USAA.

The downside? Since the deal is advertised to a number of dealerships, you might have to travel as far as Orlando. But, there is no hard sell, actually no "sell" at all.

You specify the options, the dealer bids on the sale, initial contact is done by email, then phone.

Easy-peasy.

Oh, and no additional nitrogen ($$$) in your tires, unless you insist :a040:

I have been satisfied with Phillips Toyota in Leesburg....

A couple of years back there was a horror story on TOTV about how dishonestly a buyer was treated at Phillips Toyota. Because we planned to buy there, we looked into the story, found enough truth to it, and as a result bought elsewhere. From answers to the post, it sounded like other buyers also boycotted Phillips Toyota. Can’t remember the name of the OP, but I’m sure you could find it doing a TOTV search for “Beware Phillips Toyota” or something like that. Definitely worth taking into account. Maybe the old OP will post again?

Just went through that a few months ago for the 2nd time around here. Each time the results were the same. Best thing is to decide exactly what you want, send dealers an email listing exactly what you want. If you have a trade in they'll ask for the info on that (VIN # etc.). We found the local Ocala/Leesburg dealers averaged $3-6,000 higher than many others outside of the area. The locals ones also tried to get us the buy something we really didn't want on a vehicle, or drop off something we really wanted (I.e. wanted AWD new 2020 Honda Touring but they only had a 2WD and tried to sell us on that). We found our vehicle in Jacksonville, no fuss no hassle and $6,100 less than local. The out of area dealers locate the exact vehicle you want....and trade off one of their vehicles with other dealers. We also found out that with the Ocala/Leesburg dealers.......they may have different names, but the actual ownership is all the same but they won't tell you that. Also, some of the add ons such as door edge trimming, upgraded interior floor maps etc were provided by dealer at no extra charge (the local dealers were charging). Once you purchase you can use local dealer for all service and warranty work. Yes, it's nice to support local businesses........but not when buying cars. Don't worry, the local business gets your money through service. Good luck and regardless where you buy, hope you get what makes you happy.

We have had good luck with Cecil Clark Chevrolet in Leesburg and Phillips Toyota in Leesburg. I will never buy from George Nahas Chevrolet. I took a brand new Corvette there for warranty work and they did over $1500 worth of damage to the car and sent it to Wayne’s Auto Body for repair who made it worst. I had to take it to another body shop to have it repaired. The Service manager at George Nahas told me that I was not his customer since I didn’t buy the car there. He was right, I will never be his customer.

First go to several dealers to find what car you want. Then send an email to every dealer of that brand within 100 miles telling them exactly what you want, and what discounts you may qualify for such as military or student or repeat buyer. Ask the dealer to reply by email with the total final cost including any fees, taxes, registration etc. You then have an "out the door" final cost. Print out the email and take it to the closest dealer and ask if they are willing to match the lowest cost, or call and ask.

If they say "no" get up and leave. You may get chased into the parking lot when it is decided they will take the loss and have you as a happy customer.

As to selling your used car if that is in the plan, you'll get the most if you do it yourself but that is a nuisance. Next option is trade in when you buy the new car... if they don't make a profit on selling the new car, they will low-ball you on the trade to make the profit on that re-sale. A third option is to use the instant cash offer on kelly blue book, kbb.com Be completely honest with the condition of your car and you will get exactly what is offered. You can do this before going to your dealer to see how much less they are offering.

Or you can do it the easy way and use a dealer you like, trade your car there and pay their cost. It may mean a couple thousand dollars more but save all the time and trouble. YMMV

I have used Phillips on 442/27 in Fruitland Park. Good people, not high pressure. Ask for Fred.
Off lease only are wrecked cars fixed up...buyer beware. We went and checked, many have salvage titles.

I suggest you read the newspaper for ads. Lots of them.
That said, I bought a new Hyundai Elantra in late April and the deal was 72 month interest free. Good deal plus I like the car a lot. Jenkins Hyundai of Leesburg.

I totally agree! We always use USAA. Also, do your trade-in car separately, after you have agreed on a new car. Don't let the dealer try to add it on to your new car negotiation. Also, even though you may have to go to Orlando for the new car, you can get it serviced at one of the closer dealerships.

Just look around, you can buy something a few years old with almost no miles
That's a good idea. Just be sure to get a mechanic to closely look it over first before you buy.

If you buy a car that is still under warranty, you may not need an inspection. The dealer will fix anything that is broken.

Just FYI. All services need an appt.

I know you said a nEw car, but I’ve bought three cars now from Enterprise car sales. They send 90% 0f cars to auction, but put 10% up for sale with full warranties. They inspect and update the cars and their website has a ton of information about the car with photos. The prices are below blue book and posted so there’s no haggling, and they have a money back guarantee for about a month. You can get cars that are 1 year old with 12,000 miles and save a ton on the depreciation. I’ve never had a problem with them. Google enterprise car sales. You can actually buy rental cars from many companies, too. Just a thought.

Glad it's worked for you, but I would never purchase a used RENTAL CAR.

I had rented hundreds of cars during my career, and know many people that had as well. Did we drive and take care of these short-term rentals carefully and as we would our own cars? Hell no. I had 'fun' with plenty of these vehicles as others I know did as well. Not abuse them, but...

Would I invest $$$ in a used vehicle that had (probably) hundreds of different drivers behind that steering wheel? IMO - nope. No matter the maintenance or warranty.
MUCH rather invest in a well-cared for one or two owner vehicle.

reminds me of a Seinfeld episode>

Rental Car Agent : Would you like to purchase the renter's insurance?

Jerry : Yeah, you better give me the insurance because I'm going to beat the HELL out of this thing.

I like having a new car, and it's time to upgrade. I'd like to buy something local here in the Villages and surrounding area. I don't know anything about the local dealers. I'd appreciate any input, or experiences you've had.
Found dealers here add on $2000. dealers fee. They think we are flush with cash, (Jenkins). Had salesman pound on desk cause I would not buy car. Ended up at Headquarters in clermont, no pressure, no extra fees.

KBB.com and Edmunds.com don't include a dealer fee in their calculation of the fair value price. If you know the fair value price, you don't need to discuss any individual pricing items with the dealer. As soon as you start to discuss line items of any type, you will lose money. Let him pound on the desk all he wants. When I shop for a car, I refuse to even sit in the dealer's silly little office. It's easier to discuss the purchase in the lounge where they have the free coffee.

I for one would love to see the salerep pounding on the desk. I'd be LMAO!!!

BTW: the acceptable doc fee is about $75. NOT $700.

Retiredguy typed ->The key is to ignore all of the add ons and offer to buy the car at the fair value price. They can take it or leave it. But, when you start to walk out, they will accept the price. There is no reason why they shouldn't. As soon as you start to negotiate with them, you have lost and you will pay too much. I tell the dealer upfront that I will only discuss the bottom line, out-the-door price. I tell them how I calculated my offer, and they can sell me the car, or I will just buy it somewhere else.

best approach! i always forget the out the door price part, but correct. Also, 3 year old off lease cards, < 30K in miles the best "value", which means your desired make and model and the youngest car for a fixed and least amount of money you want to spend.

Not local to TV, but wife took her 60K 4 year old Subaru outback to dealer for servicing. REcommended changing the differential fluid, (good idea) and then the bill was $1,100. I looked at what they charged for. They rotated the tires, which I forgot to tell the wife to not have them do. So for a personal project, a front back all wheel drive tire wear analysis, i measured the tread difference front to back. Ooops, they never rotated the tires. Then a while later the oil light came on, Ooooops, they never changed the oil they charged for. Oooops the family who owns the dealerships has had family members hauled to court charged with defrauding mfgs. . . . with the virus and work from home change, and intrastate travel eliminated, car service sales and service ground to a halt, and they needed cash to survive, so no mechanics, no service and higher bills. I assume that they never changed the diferential fluid, but i have no way of telling at the moment.

ie, always know your answers to what you want and what will pay, prior to going to a dealership to buy a car. Then find a trust worthy mechanic.

Research on line. Find one you like and drive it. Go back to any car search program on the internet. Find the one you want, put your contact information in. Dealers will be contacting you from all over the state with their deal and free delivery to your local dealership. Know what you should pay ahead of time and it will pay off.

I have found that, anytime you have a car shipped from another dealer, you need to pay a deposit. I would only buy a car that I can actually see on the lot. But, if you do pay a deposit, make sure that what you sign clearly defines the car with a VIN number and a copy of the official Government window sticker and that the dealer cannot substitute another vehicle. I have seen two friends get ripped off because the car they thought they were buying was not the car that was delivered. Typically, the dealer's deposit form will allow the dealer to deliver a similar, but different car. And, once you pay a deposit, you will NEVER get the money back.

The last time I was at Jenkins Honda in Leesburg, to pick up some maintenance items from the parts department, I wandered through the showroom. Every car had a Jenkins sticker next to the Honda sticker with several thousand dollars worth of nonsense, including $10K additional markup on one car. While you can certainly negotiate that nonsense away, I wonder why anyone would want to bother when they have other choices. On the other hand, the prices for the maintenance items were reasonable and the guy in the part department was very friendly.

Stay away from anyplace that has the name Jenkins.

This kind of response is not what I requested. Please keep your "hear say" to yourself or make your own posts with facts, thank you.

To get your best deal you may want to check out this web site. I've used James Bragg's program in the past he has an interesting way of car shopping and you may just get the best deal you can. You do need to focus in on the brand, model car and options.

Complete ripoff, all information in his so called "program" is public information and available to anyone who wants to take the time to do some pre-purchase research.
