View Full Version : That's Amazing!

Read no further unless you want another of my anti-newspaper diatribes.
Front page of today's rag has, as its "That's Amazing" section, a story regarding a turtle being saved from sharks by the Coastguard.
Clearly far more amazing than when the same story appeared on page A4 of Sunday's paper and it was merely "Off Beat".
I should have thought that the second time around it would be less amazing?

It is a very strange paper. Would have thought that they would have an editorial page so the developers can tell us their thoughts.

Equally as bad is the **************.com. Go to their 'Breaking News' section and you'll find articles from as far back as last year. There is rarely anything current.

There's so little to print about. I'm in Improv, and we've been in the paper several times as well as Village Neighbor.

How about yesterday’s election results? Pretty important for Sumter County residents. But when was “important” or “newsworthy” a choice applied by the editor of The Villages Daily FUN?

A few years ago the front page headline noted that there was a nationwide WINE SHORTAGE. But the article went on to state villagers need not worry because there was enough in stock around here to meet our demand. Just one of the many reasons I eventually canceled my subscription in favor of a different (but more expensive) newspaper. Well worth it if you want real national news.

There is always some news in that paper, but IMHO that publication should be entitled:
"Oh, Look How Wonderful We Are".

One reason we still subscribe is something light to read while having breakfast.
Does give some news about what is going on around here.
And they do have some interesting columnists like Walter _____. Last name escapes me.

I will cancel the newspaper, it is a worthless rag. Now that they will be burning the recycling instead of recycling, it is more of an incentive to cancel. Less garbage to deal with.

The inherent conflict in The Sun is that the majority of Villagers call themselves Conservatives. And the wire-service news source is Associated Press - an obvious left-of-center media outlet. Having been here only three years I don't know if this is capable of being remedied - but I'll keep reading the IMPRESSIVE local paper, knowing its news IS shaded Pink.

What is REALLY strange about the paper is that years ago they eliminated "Doonesberry" from its comics section. I NEVER forgave them for that atrocity. They were afraid politically of a LITTLE BIDDY comic strip. So narrow minded, typical. SAD !

Alright, we mostly agree TV Daily is weak. Among those of you who still like to read a newspaper everyday, what do you get? Nothing? Or do you get all your "objective" news reporting online or from television and internet sources? Incidentally, I read both the POA and HOA monthlies and get some sense of balance and truth about Villages goings on from doing that.

It's funny that you brought this up today. After reading that story AGAIN, I was considering contacting the paper and asking them why they do this over and over. It's poor editorial management. That was probably the tenth time I've seen a repeat story in the paper in just a year.

Try reading the recreation section or pick up a free copy at a rec center. Very informative advertising. No activities to list. And we pay lots of amenity fee $ for the pleasure. Are we smart or what???

The Daily Sun is not The New York Times. All print journalism is waning all over this country.
However after reading the jabs and criticisms and some from new people who had more than one comment I think they would be happier getting a subscription to The Orlando Sentinel or The Tampa Bay Times or The Miami Herald as they have the editorial slant you are more used to.
The Daily Sun does have it's front page news on the second page and does get and print National and international news there to.
It echoes the editorial opinion of the majority of people who live HERE.

Complaining has become a favorite past time. Our local newspaper, while I don't agree with politically, usually reports the news in a fair and honest way. The Sun does not support conspiracy theories from the right.
If you don't like the news, it a simple solution, don't take the newspaper. Either way, who are you to complain.

While I agree that most of the national news is dated, let’s keep in mind that this is a local paper geared toward course population. It focuses on local activities and our community and in that respect I believe it does an excellent job. I also think the paper has a strong sports section.

Thank you for your many suggestions to cancel the newspaper but I have no intention of so doing. I have taken it for ten years and find many aspects of it to be of interest.
Obviously not the numerous photos of residents' grandchildren doing cute things - I don't even know most of the residents; why would I be even remotely interested in their grandchildren? Makes life easy for the newspaper, though, if they can get other people to provide free copy.
Nor the banality that fills D2 every day - 'Bob Smith swings his pickleball bat and puts a looping return over the net. "I play for ninety minutes every day", says Bob, before returning to his game'. Fascinating stuff, reading about someone else's pickleball game.
Pages of back to school photographs of kids we don't know? No thank you.
But I do enjoy reading most of the news, and the comic page is my favorite, so I consider the price of the newspaper worth paying to have it delivered every morning.
And in case you are worried that repeat stories are raising my blood pressure, I enjoy finding them like others enjoy finding hidden words in a grid. Whatever floats your boat, eh? Long may they keep coming - and I'm sure they will.

That option is available. 2 quarters on Wednesday and 4 on Sunday at your closest Daily Sun paper wending machine.
Better yet try online https://www.thevillagesdailysun.com/ and save the quarters.
