Hello!
We were in TV this past February for a few days (stayed at Comfort Suites) and were interested enough that we are planning a lifestyle preview.
Couple questions ... are there any plans for an indoor pool or a sun shade covering for some of the outdoor pools? (have had four skin cancer surgeries and would like the shade protection).
How long before you really felt part of the community ... developed good friendships, and felt you were "home?" When we were there in February, we didn't experience the "warmy, fuzzy, welcoming" feeling I read about. We tried initiating conversations many times but it was only other visitors like ourselves who were interested in talking.
We were surprised how early things closed up at the squares. Music seemed to end earlier than the time stated. One of the bands (who were playing at the square by Cody's) announced before their break that they would be back in 15 minutes but they never returned. Is this normal? Is there a piano bar in or near TV?
Thanks for your help! Have just started reading these forums ... it's been very informative, and we are very much looking forward to our next visit!

I found just the opposite with the people on my two visits. I saw them to be extra friendly. Everyone smiling, nodding their heads and saying "hello" was commonplace. I'm sure there a a few dirt bags around but I feel 95% of The Village People will go out of their way to make it America's friendliest hometown. PS: I just purchased a house in Buttonwood.

Being sensitive to the sun also, I've found pools that are partly shaded, you just have to take time and look in your neighborhood at various times. But, mostly, I go to the pool at the end of the day when the sun is not so strong. You can wear a hat (most do) and some even wear long-sleeved shirts. Also, there are four pools open until 11 pm!
We were surprised at how early things close up here, too. But then we realized that there is live entertainment indoors at several restaurants and you can continue the party indoors.
We are full-timers and have lived here just a few weeks, but we already feel at home and know that moving here was the best decision we could have made.

Which are the 4 pools open until 11 pm?
I avoid pools during the midday hours - easily burned - understand the skin cancer concern.
My grandsons have swim shirts that screen UV rays - would think these are probably also available for adults somewhere online or at a bathing suit shop, but haven't checked. The fabric doesn't get heavy like t-shirt fabric would.
Swimshirts would be great for water aerobics and water volleyball also.
Hi Pat and Bob,
Welcome!
A couple of things....entertainment does stop at 9, but if it's cold, and it was cold here in Feb, then entertainment stops when the temps reach a certain point....I think it's somewhere in the 40's but I can't give you the exact temp. It gets difficult for entertainers to play guitars or horns in the cold.
Sorry you didn't meet too many friendly locals. Really most people are very friendly to others, guess you just met a few who had other things on their minds.
You start to feel a part of this community almost immediately. When you start your moving in process, people will come to say hello and and offer various types of help, be it the use of their phone, internet, drop off food, etc, but if you're moving into an area with few people, they might too, be busy getting their households in order. You can go to them....believe me, it will be appreciated and always remembered. I remember the appearance of a neighbor with a tray of food to heat up for our dinner when we were moving in. It was so wonderful of her and so greatly appreciated. She is a dear woman and I am honored to be her friend. You'll find the same thing happening to you or doing for others.
I'm not a pool person, too hot in the summer, but you've been told to check out all the pools during the day to see how shaded it might be...good idea. There are lots of pools in the community and though it's nice to be able to use one close to home, others might provide better sun protection right now.
Again, welcome home.....enjoy!

Hi Pat,
:welcome: to TOTV.
Chatting right here is actually a great way to meet Villagers, and it easily carries over to "in person" friendships if you are outgoing and make the effort. If you can arrange your lifestyle visit so that you are in TV the third Friday of the month, you'll have a wonderful opportunity to meet your TOTV friends at the Crisper's Luncheon.
You'll meet friendly people who have interests in common with yours when you participate in rec. activities and clubs in TV and when you go to the (shaded) pools. There are clubs for virtually every interest and even for people from various hometowns. Learning a sport such as golf, pickleball, bocce ball or hundreds of others is a great way to meet people.
Some people say that the best way to make friends with neighbors is to move to a new Village, where everyone is moving at about the same time. While that might be so, we've found our neighbors in the eight-year-old Village where we purchased to be very friendly, helpful and welcoming. We purchased only this past October-- and we are only snowflakes!
So yes, you will meet the nicest people in TV! Hope you join us.

We found a church right away and there found many of our current friends. Our church has something called Table Talk. Four couples meet once a month either in each others home or a restaurant and back to a home for dessert. It is a great way to meet people. In fact that is where we met our very best friends.

We were some of the first in our neighborhood. Once there were enough homes occupied we organized a block party in the street. It was a bring your own drinks and a bag of munchies to share. That group grew to over 100 in about a year. We have 8 or 10 close couples from the original group we do things with on an almost daily basis and get together with others often. It took a few weeks to feel at home.
As for the pools the CC have more shade than most but a priority membership is required. The others have a building on 1 side and shade can be found early or late in the day depending on config.

We have visited TV twice over the last several years, and always found the residents very friendly and outgoing. We are looking forward to retiring there, but unfortunately cannot do this until 2018.
Until then we just lurk on this site and get all sorts of very useful information on TV. You guys are the best.

We have been here two years, in Hemingway. The folks here are great. Once we moved in the neighbors were all helpful. We have been going out together during the day doing sports things. Water volley ball a great way to meet people out side of your neighbor hood. At the evening we usually wind up at someone's gathering. As far as after hours, there is little that I know of.
A covered out door or indoor pool I don't see it happening. They just closed one up do to lack of use.
