I have been told that I will need a hip replacement in the near future. I would appreciate any doctor recommendations and personal experience with recovery. Also curious as to when and if you were able to return to golfing.
Thank you.

I used Dr John Williams in the Sharon Morse building. I went in on a Thursday morning, was up walking once in my room and went home the next day. If I golfed, I could have golfed in six weeks. His office number is 352 751 2862. A lot of people use Dr Duke in Ocala. I wanted to stay local but I think everyone who uses Dr Wiliiams loves him.

I used Dr Duke for my hip replacement last year at Marion West Hospital. Went home the day after surgery and was back golfing after 4 months after surgery. Saw the doctor in his office before surgery, the day of surgery, then his support staff for subsequent visits after surgery.

Dr. Michael Messiah, 352-243-6899, wonderful orthopedic surgeon, french-canadian, office located near villages hospital. I was ready for golf after 2 weeks but Dr. had me wait 6 weeks.

My research narrowed my choice to Dr. Locker in Ocala whom I highly recommend. He has a surgical suite on sight so if you don’t have problematic health issues you can have this as an outpatient procedure which saved me on the hospital cost. I was in at 6:30 AM and walked out at 11:30. He has also perfected a bikini line anterior approach if hiding the scar is important to you. He was personable and never hurried an appointment. Dr. Duke is also reported to be very good and has joined Dr. Lockers practice but don’t quote me on that. Don’t put it off. I did thinking I was too young (not yet 65). My implant is 1.5 years young and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Good luck in your search!

Thank you all for your important feedback. As a 77 year old I wasn't sure if the surgery would allow me to return to an active lifestyle.

First of all, it’s an easy surgery. You will start playing golf in 6 weeks with no pain at all. (It won’t fix your game, but, you’ll be good as new).
I had mine about 15 months ago. Dr Locker did mine and was fantastic. Highly recommended. The truth is we have several good Doctors for hip replacement. The key isn’t so much the surgeon as it is the type of surgery and the facilities. There are two types of Hip Surgery Anterior and Posterior. Anterior is done in the front and is much simpler and quicker recovery. Posterior is done in the backside and they cut through lots of tissue. Recovery and pain level is higher and longer.
My surgery was at West Ocala Hospital and they were great. Caring, clean and very nice.
Again it is an easy surgery and very little pain. Respond with any questions you have.

I had my hip replaced June 10th and I have my life back 80%. Pickleball has to wait a while longer. Dr. Joseph Locker in Ocala. The hospital is West Marion. Both were excellent. One overnight and gourmet meal for lunch the following day.

Another vote for Dr. Locker. He did both my hips. One six years ago and the other five. It is a very easy surgery , rehab was good ( use Better at a Home for rehab). I was back to Pickleball in four weeks. They can make you good as new 😀.

Yes, all these posts are correct. I had A hip replacement in New York. After contacting about fourteen doctors, (because I was considered higher risk And many doctors hesitated operating) I finally found a fabulous, top notch doctor. I was in surgery one day and home the next. Some doctors still use the old procedure (posterior approach) because that is what they are used to doing. I was thrilled that I was able to have the anterior approach (cut about 4 inches in front of upper thigh). Very minimal recovery and little to no pain. I was walking as soon as I was out of recovery. The only difficulty is lifting leg on and off bed unassisted for about 1 week. They do want you to give it 6 weeks before driving. Anterior approach, muscles aren’t cut. Posterior approach, Muscles cut causing much more pain and
you can never cross your legs. Chances of hip popping out. Stick with a doc who will do anterior approach. I was golfing again, not long after.

Don’t wait, you’ll eventually have it done and kick yourself for not having it done sooner. I’ve had both mine replaced, as well as one knee. My first replacement was about thirty years ago. The procedure and prostheses designs are hugely better now. The rehab these days is much shorter, only a couple of weeks rather than months. Truly a life-changing procedure.

Pick an experienced orthopedic surgeon who does the procedure using the ANTERIOR approach. That foreshortens the recovery time dramatically.

Dr. Jeffrey Karina is a great surgeon. He was head of orthopaedics in a large NY hospital and is known locally for his advanced techniques with knee replacements. He does hip replacements also.

the best thing I ever did several years into total hip replacement and it is great. typical comments from the many people I spoke with prior to getting it done was that they should have had it done sooner.

I agree with Dr John Williams. He did both my hubsand's hips and 1 knee. He did both my knees at once. We both love him and have had no problems..

I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Joseph Locker with Orthoepedic Institute in Ocala. He did mine and did a fantastic job. The surgery was performed at West Marion Hospital which is far better than The Villages Hospital. I would never have another done with anyone but him!!!

Well coming here is a start but why one person likes a Dr. may not be right for you. I would go online & find what kind of Dr. you’re looking for & then look at their background, it’ll list Drs. & a little about them & how they’re rated. If you type in surgeons or whatever kind of Dr. you want. It should tell you anything you want to know about this Dr. Of course anybody that has surgery is going to say this one is the best. Good Luck!

I agree with all of this. I had mine done 1 year ago in Overland Park Kansas (KC Area) where I still live until Fall of 2021. Anterior approach with little pain. I stopped prescription pain killers after 2 days and used only Tylenol. I could have golfed after 4-6 weeks but waited until after my 1st follow up appointment that got delayed to 7 weeks. Surgery was after noon so had to stay overnight if it had been early AM could have gone home same day. Do not delay. I am thinking about my second hip soon as it just started some slight paid although I am still walking 18 holes of golf twice per week back here where I don't have my own cart. It did not fix my golf game but made it much more enjoyable. Rehab is a piece of cake. MUCH easier than knees.

My 80+ yo mother had her hip repair done in 2011 after a fall by Dr. John Williams. I say repair because she’d already had it replaced many years before when she lived in south FL. He is fantastic. Her recovery was very smooth.

There are several good surgeons recommended. Anterior is the best way to go - NO problems after with muscles cut, never crossing legs again, etc. Robotic if possible. Personally I do all surgeries at Shands in Gainesville.

I had my knee and both hips done by Dr Ollivierre. My wife had a knee done by him. Excellant surgeon and person.

I believe that's an Anterior hip replacement where the surgeon works between the muscles, pushing them aside to get to the hip joint. This allows ready access to the hip joint with minimal or no muscle cutting.

Again, thanks to all of you who took the time to respond. I have researched all the Doctors recommended and have decided to go with Dr. Locker as he is in same group as my pain doctor. Can't thank you enough.
