View Full Version : Are Supermarkets Fully Restocked Now?

Hi all, we are planning to rent for a couple of months and we're wondering if there were still hard to get items in the supermarkets or if they have recovered from the hoarding that took place a few months ago and are now fully stocked. Anything we might want to bring with us besides face masks and hand sanitizer? Thanks!

When other half comes down car is packed with essential items, as a just in case. It’s hurricane season, but during the Past hoarding, tHe stores refused to except returns, so It’s about the same as in any state

The stores are well stocked. The only item I cannot find is a tub of disinfecting wipes - like Lysol wipes or Clorox wipes. Also disinfectant spray is hard to find - like Lysol spray.

Just some info for those looking for Clorox wipes. Walmart (best one is in Leesburg because most of the "Villages hoarders" don't go there) gets them often. Target on 441 had 4 levels of 6' shelves filled with 4-packs of Clorox wipes on Monday or Tuesday. If you belong to Costco you can often order 6-pack boxes of their house brand wipes which are identical in "ingredients" to Clorox. You have to check their website a few times a week because they come and go. We ordered a box and had them in 2 days about a month ago

More empty spaces on store shelves than normal. Much better than it was say 3 months ago when so many things had limits you could purchase.

There's PLENTY of face masks and hand sanitizers, of all different types, materials, brand names, and price ranges. Bring a few anyway (since it's a good habit to get into), but the hoarding ended very shortly after it began. The initial hoarding contributed to shortages, and it took awhile for manufacturers to catch up. But the hoarding itself was short-lived, since most stores imposed limits on items after they realized people were being irresponsible and greedy.

There aren't as many brands of paper towels and toilet paper as there was previously. But there's plenty of it, and plenty of a variety of strengths/softness (or lack thereof). Keep in mind though this is hurricane season, which means people will STILL buy more than they need whenever there's a "hurricane watch" or "severe thunderstorm warning" in the area. It's just the typical nonsense though. You won't need to panic if you don't see your favorite can of soup on the shelf.

Some items run out quicker than they did, when the shipment comes in. But it's usually replenished within a day or two, or readily available at one of the many other stores nearby.

The Publix at Colony Plaza often has Windex wipes, which come in a package, not a tub.

You’d think the homeowner would supply the house you’re renting with disinfectant wipes. Hope they’ve disinfected the vacation club rental house, per CDC

No, some of them were being irresponsible and greedy. That is WHY the stores started imposing limits. You didn't watch the video of a couple buying ALL the toilet paper in one of the Dollar Stores, so they could sell them on e-bay and make a profit? They bought the entire store's supply, leaving nothing for anyone else. Loaded up their pickup truck full.

Then one guy who bought out the supplies of hand sanitizers in several stores around three different states for the same purpose - though he was banned from the platform he was using to resell them, if I recall correctly.

In the Villages it was on a smaller scale but it was still happening. People were buying 4 or 5 24-packs of toilet paper, 5-8 loaves of bread, 5 packs of 100-each napkins - more than they would need for an entire year of many things, and enough of other things to last 5-6 months. The canned soup shelves were completely empty within hours of being stocked, so were canned vegetables.

It wasn't "preparing." It was hoarding.

We never had any problem having enough in our home. Never hoarded anything---did the regular shopping. One thing we noticed though was tomato products (ie. sauce) was hard to find and the shelves were skimpy with other tomato products for whatever reason. Frozen veggies too were down. But I will say, we didn't starve and found just what was needed. I do know with toilet paper it must have been a world-wide issue as someone whose link I follow online (video) mentioned in their country it was hard to find as well. For whatever reason we were good at our house and never had an issue. Happy to see those shelves are back with product.

We did Walmart pick-up as well.

During the hoarding times, Walmart made a number of substitutions.
Most were okay, until they substituted our ice cream.........I was in an unhappy house.

We prepare all of our meals at home...for the most part we haven't had any difficulty finding the items on our grocery list over the past couple of months

the limitations on the number of items one could purchase seems to have ended

you are expected to wear a face mask in the grocery stores

all that said...we did have to go to two stores yesterday to find a fresh cabbage...but those are never heavily stocked anyway

I suspect that 'the shelves' on our local grocery stores look no different than those where you are presently

As I was sitting on our front porch, I happen to see a very large package delivered to my neighbor a few months ago. Afterwards he saw me in the yard and ask me if I needed any toilet paper. I said no. Our daughter just had 72 rolls delivered to us and I have no idea what to do with all of them he said. 72 rolls - all we could do was have a big laugh. Someone said that paper towels were a bit hard to find and sugar free ice cream. Life goes on.

one of my 'guilty pleasures' is Diet A&W or Diet Barqs root beer. I used to drink a can or so of Diet Pepsi almost each day. My kidney Dr told me some additives in Coke/Pepsi -for coloring I believe- was not good for patients with kidney issues. I asked about root beer - thumbs up from him.

So began the 'root beer kick' - OMG so good and brings back chilhood memories. Was running low a few weeks ago, and at Winn Dixie, had a special on their brand diet Root beer. hmm, not quite as good. Last Friday we were at the WM on 466. Went to the 'soda' aisle - yikes, SO picked over and LOTS of empty areas - including ANY type of diet root beer. Oh well. Friday, I assumed would be all stocked up.

The stores are stocked people are not hoarding. The virus is not hitting the villages. We have been running around all this time and not sick. Some stores require you were a mask. So bring them. But no need to cancel. We have a lot of false positives being reported. I know several people who first got positive results then 2 days later with the more advanced test was negative. The makers of Clorox wipes said on the news 2 weeks ago that we will not see their product on shelves before 2021 because they just can’t get caught up.

Another farce played on us. Oh well after the election no matter who wins this too will fade off into the sunset.

Strange one would think they would continue to make something that has higher demand as quickly as possible.

I took the time to discuss this issue with 2 Publix locations - both said that their producer was impacted by the plague.

Thing is....all the major brands have nuggets on the shelves so I’m a bit skeptical. It’s 5 months later - nothing I can do except check the shelf each time I visit.

Would think a lot of it is based on poor management of some stores

You'd be thinking incorrectly then. Most products in Publix are brought in via automatic ordering system. Publix doesn't call Kellogg's and tell them "We need 20 boxes of this, 4 boxes of that, and two cases of the other thing." The bar codes scan into the system when you buy something, that goes into a matrix, and this very complex computer program lets the vendors know what was sold, how many of each. Then the vendor's computer program figures out which stores in which districts need which items in which quantities, and collects whatever is available to fill those orders.

If something is unavailable, it doesn't get shipped - but the rest of the order does.

I can't speak on behalf of every store in the country, but I can tell you this is basically the same as the system in Staples, and in Party City, Stop & Shop, and Big Y.

Management has very little control over what is actually sent to the stores, with certain exceptions.

Yesterday they were gone.

When all this craziness started I saw a guy with 32 jars of peanut butter in his shopping cart-wondered if he's finished it yet?

That person was a speculator, hoping to make money reselling the peanut butter online at an inflated price.

During the shortages, we saw thing like yeast, for making bread, where a tiny 3 pack that normally sold for 89 cents, was selling to $10 to $15! We didn’t buy at that inflated prices, but I’m sure that some people did pay that much. Those speculators probably made a lot of money.

You’re better off if you don’t live hand to mouth. There’s still shortages on freezers. If your freezer quits working now, good luck trying to find one. People were buying a lot of food and freezing the food.

Now is the time to slowly stock up on toilet paper, paper towels, bottled water, disinfectant wipes, and other things that had shortages in the past. If you experienced running out of things that you couldn’t buy, now is the time to restock, so you aren’t burned again.

When the rioting, looting, and arson was occurring in Minnesota, I wanted to top off my half full two gallon lawn mower gas can. I couldn’t, because the gas station was closed due to “social disorder”. Another customer at the gas station was panicking because he couldn’t buy gas to fill his empty gas tank. He didn’t have enough fuel to drive home, and might not have enough fuel to drive around and find a gas station that was open in the middle of the afternoon because of the rioting, looting, and arson that might be reoccurring after nightfall. We used to top off our car’s gas tanks when they got down to half full. Now, we top off the tanks when we have driven about 100 miles since the gas tank was full. I think it’s irresponsible to drive around with a nearly empty gas tank.

It’s important to stock up on items, and stop living hand to mouth. Some people live their lives with only a burned out light bulb in their empty refrigerator!

I've been shopping at Publix, Wal-Mart, and Winn-Dixie. I see shortages of canned soup at all three stores. They have some soup, but favorites are often unavailable.

I am also seeing shortages of canned soda, especially diet. Fresca has nearly disappeared. I'm hearing there is an aluminum shortage ~ not sure if it is the cans, or the metal, or a combo of both.

I'm told the "aluminum shortage" (huh?) is responsible for the lack of Diet Caffeine-free Coke (or Pepsi) in cans. Why in the world would this be? Are people eating too much aluminum? Come on already!

I'm told the "aluminum shortage" (huh?) is responsible for the lack of Diet Caffeine-free Coke (or Pepsi) in cans. Why in the world would this be? Are people eating too much aluminum? Come one already!

Some explanations (it's not just a single cause, it's culmination of things):

1. For months, bars were closed. That meant beer normally contained in kegs, was then contained in cans and sold in supermarkets, where it was quickly purchased. Remember all those beer drinkers could no longer get beer at bars on tap. And bottled beer is more expensive then canned beer. If you're gonna have to drink your Bud Lite at home, might as well go for the can instead of the bottle. So - more demand for cans, as a result of zero demand in bars due to closures.

2. Ecological reasons. This is all happening during the era of recycling. Outside the Villages, maybe outside Florida, or perhaps outside the waste-belt completely - the rest of the country and most of the world is trying to reduce consumption of plastics. So they're turning to cans instead of plastic bottles for liquids.

Combine the two together and you have an aluminum shortage.

They were buying soup because it is food that has a pretty long shelf life. They are trying to buy food that will last a long time for a food shortage with an unknown end date. The soup doesn't need refrigeration, but it probably needs to be cooked. But mainly, it's for the long shelf life, much longer than many other foods.

I bought 20 jars of peanut butter, and 10 assorted large jelly. The daycare on site just opened up, and had a list of staples they needed. So we all went shopping after 12 long hours, and not one person thought it was odd the quantity of what we were all buying.

Hi all, we are planning to rent for a couple of months and we're wondering if there were still hard to get items in the supermarkets or if they have recovered from the hoarding that took place a few months ago and are now fully stocked. Anything we might want to bring with us besides face masks and hand sanitizer? Thanks!
Dave

the super markets are fully stocked

just bring your wallet, a grocery list and a positive attitude...and you'll be fine

Since this all started, we haven't been able to buy Lysol or our favorite cans of Campbell's Soup, anywhere! Sure, the stores might not have your first choice of items, but they'll have something comparable.
