I've been looking at properties in the villages for the past year - plans put on hold until Covid-19 is over - and have made some short trips to visit and experience the lifestyle around Sumter.
I like variety in my food and Thai, Indian, Japanese, Korean foods are all favorites. While I managed to enjoy a meal at Thai Ruby I was unable to locate any nearby Indian restaurants.
Can anyone that lives around Sumter and shares the same taste as me comment on what options there are in the Villages? If I have to go outside of the bubble to say Ocala or beyond, then do you find it too far to travel?
Thanks.

Lots of places reviewed! But how do you filter the search to only see a list of Indian restaurants? I'd LOVE to get a decent chicken curry but have no idea where to look.
Ah I found it - the search button isn't JUST a search button. It lets you filter-search! Awesome, thanks!
I think next time I go to Mt. Dora I'll have to stop at Shiva restaurant. Maybe instead of getting my usual chicken curry I'll try a couple of their appetizers, and the masala tea, and kheer for dessert. Missing Indian food SO much! We had one place in walking distance of my house up north, and 3 others within a 15 minute drive.
Miss the gastronomic adventure of New Haven County, Connecticut, SO much.

We did have an authentic Indian Restaurant in SS many years ago, it was in the group of shops past Publix. Unfortunately, it just could not make it here. Food was excellent.

I can help you. A fantastic Indian Restaurant at Palm Coast Fl. 2 hr drive from the Villages.
I just happen to have a 3 Br. 3 Bath Condo that I am selling this week. Approx 2100 sq ft, 4th top floor end unit facing the intercoastal waterway. The condo is immaculate never been rented and I am the 2nd owner and honestly hardly been used.
Price $ 345,000 with furniture available. The restaurant is easily less then a 10 min. drive. :)

Hi - I'm a Brit - Have eaten in the Spanish Springs one a few years ago - was not good not surprised they did not make it ...now were any of the ones in Ocala ... SO us Brits formed our own curry club and we meet once every 3-4 weeks at someone's house each of us then bring different things - starters/mains etc. When you get to The Villages make friends with a Brit ... we have over 9000 Indian restaurants in the UK .. we know what we are doing !! What region to you like ?? Flavours are totally different depending on region.

For chicken curry, Amrit Palace In Ocala is good But my favorite Indian restaurant is Bombay Cafe, near I75, excellent food, all vegetarian or vegan (South Indian).

If you can't find those type of restaurants near you I recommend you try making them yourself! Because of Covid I tried to make my own authentic indian food and it was just as good as restaurants I've been to, and quite easy to do.

We use and rate restaurants on Trip Advisor, you might want to review these there.
Those are off my head the best of the best around here. We do patronize restaurants that have great food and service

Most of the restaurants around here are ok but not consistent unique or exceptional being it is for the most part franchise food. A great steak, Japanese etc can only be found driving 45-70 min in either direction. These businesses can not afford the 20-30% higher commercial rent plus a royalty fee payable to TV, before they even open they have these 2 strikes against them. This won’t change.

A basic chicken curry is very easy to make. Publix has wonderful naan bread and you can make a yogurt dip very easily, too.

Please understand TV is 90% white, largely midwestern and northeastern transplants. With the exception of large city dwellers, most do not seek ethnic restaurants. Add that cheap largely defines Villagers, the area is full of $15 meals and $2.50 beer. To experience something different, you have to go to Gainesville, Ocala, Tampa and Orlando. FYI, Amrit Palace has been a great family run Indian restaurant for over 20 years.

You have to go to Orlando and even there it is not the real thing. How I miss Manchester! Used to go there when I worked for Unilever.

Amrit is okay for what it is, but it is Americanized Indian food. I'd rather drive the few extra miles and go to Orlando for Indian food. Many choices. Make it a day and go to Trader Joe's and Costco.

Amarillo Palace in Ocala is excellent, both for food and service. The SW side of Ocala is about a half hour’s drive from The Villages north of 466.

I thought the closed space in SS was over priced for Indian food
But how do you filter the search to only see a list of Indian restaurants?
It's easy, they have a SEARCH PAGE (http://thevillagesgourmetclub.com/search.html). In Section 2 you check the box on Indian/Pakistani, then click on the green SEARCH button. Comes up with 5 in the area. Click on their big blue buttons to read the description and any reviews. Not like Yelp with false testimonials, this site takes reviews from club members only and they all live in The Villages. No advertising to get in the way too.
Cool!

The wife and I found that out the hard way. There was a new Indian restaurant we wanted to try it out as we had never eaten that cuisine before. A friend went with us and we all ordered 3 different dishes. There was so much curry in the food that we couldn't tell the difference in the meat in our dishes when we tried a sample of each other's meal. All you could taste was the curry. We didn't finish our meals. Our friend was a very direct individual so when the server asked how our meal was my friend told her it was the nastiest stuff he had ever put in his mouth.
Some months later a co-worker, an Indian lady, invited us to her wedding and said they were having an Indian caterer provide the meal. We were quite apprehensive about the meal but it turned out to be the direct opposite of the restaurant experience. The food was delicious. I told our friend about the meal we had eaten previously and the difference between the caterer's food. She said that more than likely the restaurant owner and cook were from an area in India where they used a lot of curry. The caterer was from another area where the use of curry was modest. She also said she didn't like excessive curry in her food.
