Nothing against Google et al - we both use Google Chromebook laptops (also have a Windows & Apple).

I tend to use the GOOGLE search engine about 10 times per day - for various reasons. Lately I have found some Google search results to be quite 'partisan' and somewhat biased. Esp for news, articles, and current events topics.

So I researched other SEARCH ENGINES and came upon alternatives. Checked out DUCKDUCKGO. Used last 3 days and find it to be very fair impartial "results", quick, and displays (esp videos and images) nicely.

Another very good reason to use the above recommended search engine is because they don’t sell your search results to third party firms to be used for targeted marketing purposes.

'impartial' meaning they don't seem to be filtered with algorithyms based upon political stance. It's well known that Google, Amazon, Yahoo, Twitter - and many others on the 'coast' apply them. Easy to see with some results, esp news. I am Independent and like 'all sides'. Even if I may not "agree with them". Freedom of thought, expression, and Press. period.

Thanks for sharing, I'll try it....even though I don't let the "left coast" tech companies cloud my common sense and power of reasoning....:icon_wink:

Have used DuckDuckGo for a couple of years and love it. I use Google sometimes but use DuckDuckGo 95 percent of the time. To me it is more efficient.

Google includes results based on popularity of searches. If "most people who use Google" click on "this website dot com" to find information about "this topic," then it will show up #1 on the list when you search for "this topic." It will filter out certain things, such as XXX porn sites that have added tags and hashmarks expressly to get on that list. Or it might filter out things that Google has previously marked as illegal, such as warez sites and Nigerian scams. Mostly though it just tags those results with a "warning - this might be a compromised site" or some other such wording. Your own preferences will determine which things get filtered out, more or less. Most of it is entirely in your control, you just have to be pro-active.

It's not an agenda, it's just how the math works.

DuckDuckGo is very useful.

Bing is loaded with nonsense, used mostly by people who don't understand how search engines work, and will copy a search RESULTS link, thinking that it's a link to a specific result. Or they'll believe that every link on that search result is reliable and truthful - again, because they have no idea how search engines work.

Such a broad brush you use to disparage others! As a Bing user I can attest to the fact that your opinion is just that and is not a fact!

It's quite true that Google can be partisan as well as 90% how the media papers and TV stations. DuckDuckGo also has the advantage of keeping all of your searches private. The other way you can use Google and Chrome his to logout of your Gmail account and create another one. But don't use the new one for email. Google basically collects all the information about your emails and your search patterns to give you the results you generally want. In other words it's a shelf replicating system a feedback give you positive results that you want and like. Very similar to YouTube suggesting movies or videos similar to what you just watched. There is other other small search engines as well are you can explore

Thanks. I’ve just downloaded the App to give it a try. I’ve seen it praised a number of times in Consumer Reports, but I’d never tried it. So far as I can tell with five minutes of use, one big difference is that instead of having a tool bar across the top with tabs for everything I’ve looked at and left but not closed, there’s a little box at bottom right of the screen with numbers in it for each open tab. I click on that and get a list of what is open. That will take a bit of getting used to.

Duckduckgo.com is good. I would also recommend dogpile.com, which simply aggregates searches of multiple search engines.

Google now completely turns me off. First, I don't need a search engine to find commercial ads for me. Second, I am center right having voted for both parties, but I find their searches to be highly biased for the left.

Leaves you in vulnerable position. It does not offer all the results Google does.

I left Google years ago because so many of my results showed left leaning results. I now use BING. I love the daily "Bing Page". Each morning, I'm greeted by an interesting picture and the story behind the picture. It's often a gorgeous or interesting place around the world. I love to read the broader description! It's like taking a little journey every morning!

Ecosia.com is a German based search engine that I use along with DuckDuckGo. They used their profits to plant trees, so if you want to help them all you need to do is search. The results seem to be politically neutral and they do not track you if you prefer, or maintain a profile of you. So, they cannot sell your data to others.

Perhaps you can explain to me how I just did a search 5 times on a subject and the sites showed up it exactly the same order every single time.

Thanks for the suggested alternative.
Initial trial is favorable.

Along the lines of alternates....for a conservative news source try
Gateway Pundits.

Charlie , Your an Independent. Did you know that you can't vote in local elections unless there is someone running as a independent. Sometimes you can't vote even if your a registered Democrat. Of course you may have meant that you are a independent thinker which I applaud you.

That is incorrect. If you're unaffiliated (which is what most people who say they are independent mean - not Independent, with a capital I), you can vote in any election in your district as long as it's not a primary. In order to vote in a Republican Primary you have to be registered a Republican. To vote in a Democratic Primary you have to be registered a Democrat. After the candidates are selected through the Primary vote, they still have to run for a final election. If you're registered to vote in that district, you can vote for whatever candidate you like on the actual final Election day.

I used to use Moxilla Firefox and Go Duck Go. I hated the "big brother" aspect of Google, but I like the features of Google!! For example, when I search for a subject and want images of that subject (like Halloween), there is no comparison of the search capabilities of the two. Google crushes Go Duck Go in that aspect. It's been a while, but I don't remember Go Duck Go even having the ability to click on "images" when searching a subject.

Maybe I'll try Go Duck Go again (which means a lot of my "remember me" sites will have be log in with user name and password again. Sigh).

A major issue that you are not addressing is that your browser, and its ads, have access to your web activity and data is sold to the highest bidder.
I switched to the “Brave” browser that blocks ads, tracking cookies, and does not sell your browsing activity.
Occasionally, a web site with pop ups may not load correctly, so I temporarily switch to a backup browser. But denying the Silicon Valley tech giants access to your data should be a primary goal.

I group Bing and AOL together as old and forgotten programs. I would like to add Bixby to that but Samsung won't let me on the Galaxy Note. Google search is fast and loaded with features. Never noticed any political leaning.

really???

The search engines you noted DO NOT rate Search engines - they provide the results of their searches (various sites, which may rate the Search Engines). These different sites provide their OWN ratings and results. Example if one of the Search results is Consumer Reports, and they consider Joe's Search Engine tops - that's on them. Of course, one may pick and choose and reply with those as..... your SHOCKER! really....

Well golly gee willikers, I just did a search for the two words "search engines" and you're right! It pulls up a list, and nothing more. You know what's the first result on the list when I type those two words into Google?

17 Great Search Engines You Can Use Instead of Google (https://www.searchenginejournal.com/alternative-search-engines/271409/)

That's the FIRST result. Google is showing me the 17 alternatives to its own browser. Shocker isn't it?

Maybe because of metrics. That'd be my guess, since that's what Google says its results are based on.

It's not advertising itself, it's not promoting itself above anyone else, it's not pushing a political agenda on anyone. It's just providing results based on a complicated series of metrics. Just like most search engines do (some are just aggregates of other search engines results).

The only upside to DuckDuckGo is that it doesn't track your useage. That's it. That's the only benefit to it. And that's a really huge benefit, if you worry about your useage being tracked by the company you have chosen to use.

As for me, I know that Google knows exactly what websites I visit, since I use the Google Chrome browser and it keeps track of that stuff so that I can visit websites without lengthy load times.
