(CNN)An 8-year-old girl was among at least 53 people shot during a violent holiday weekend in Chicago, according to police officials.
Eight people died between Friday and Monday in shooting homicides, the Chicago Police Incident Notification website shows.
The girl was killed Monday evening after gunshots were fired into an SUV she was traveling in, Chicago Police Chief of Operations Brian McDermott said during a press conference Monday night.
"I am saddened and angered that another child has lost their life to gun violence in the city of Chicago," McDermott said.
An unknown vehicle pulled up beside her at a stop light and shot into the car as the light turned green, he explained.
The girl suffered a gunshot wound to the back, according to the incident notification.
Three other people were in the car with her, at least two of whom were shot, according to the incident notification.
Following the shooting, the victims' vehicle crashed into a tree. A woman believed to be the child's mother suffered injuries from the crash, according to McDermott.
Police believe the victims' car was intentionally targeted and police are searching for the gunman, he said.
Chicago Police Supt. David Brown is expected to address violence over the Labor Day holiday weekend on Tuesday morning.

I agree...why no coverage
I'm thinking that because this has been going on for SO long that it's no longer considered news, but rather just routine happenings on the weekends in Chicago

I'm a Chicago boy born and raised in part of the city that has a lot of the crime.
Two of my cousins were inner city cops and I always wondered how they managed.
It's just sad how the city has gone downhill and I've no desire (nor reason) to return.
And yes, where's the outrage? One forum I was reading had a comment that the wagering "over/under" for Chicago shootings is 50 for every weekend - and that you should always take the over!!
This is the problem in America's big cities. George Floyd and BLM is certainly an issue and the police need policing (sad to say that too), but you're right - where's the outrage by our leadership (politicans, athletes, activists, religious, whoever) over the huge numbers of people being crime victims. It's not even talked about!!

Chicago is a complete mess. The lightweight mayor of that city does not care about the plight of its citizens... of all colors.
Eight years of the previous administration run by a citizen of Chicago who for those eight years failed to address the problem. If this individual would fly from Martha's vineyard and spend his free time "peacefully" helping his hometown, perhaps something positive could have been accomplished. The same goes to all these "social justice warriors" who walk around wearing black shirts and dribble a basketball.

There's no outrage because it wouldn't be politically expedient.
I saw that a white guy killed a Black cop last week and not a peep from Black Lives Matter.
It's only a problem if it can be used to further their agenda.
Murders have been going on in Chicago for years. There is especially a high murder rate of Black people. But suddenly, it's President Trump's fault.
All of these protests, rioting etc are only happening for political purposes.
It’s just not Chicago. It’s KCMO, NYC area, St. Louis, Orlando, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Ect... about every major cities. The above has been bad for 50 plus years. Basically the agenda is to stop policing so illegal activities won’t be pursued. Basically 3rd world law and disorder like Mexico.

No money in it. It's about money, also about notoriety. Best to report on white vs black then black vs white or white vs white or black vs black. Keep the ratings up fan the fires of civil disrest. Sponsors of news stations control the masses, manipulation by selective aggravation of our lives. No lives only matter when news stations can make money off of them. It's business not personal!

There’s coverage in Chicago, but the wire services and TV have tired of picking up the reports.
As a Chicago area native, it’s commonly known that the well-armed drug-financed gangs control the south and west sides of the city. The fatalities and injuries are gang wars or innocent bystanders. The gangs have well-defined borders and “defend” them aggressively. They sustain their ranks with aggressive “recruiting” of new members. Young men have a choice when drafted into the gangs — accept or be beaten or killed. The situation on the south and west sides of the city is very much like what the situation was/is in Mexico.
There isn’t any way that the City can afford the number of police which would be necessary to quash the gangs. The solution would have to be the same as what was done in Mexico. They deployed virtually their entire armed forces, marines and army, throughout the country to go to war with the drug lords.
Whose decision is it to deploy such forces? Certainly not the mayor of Chicago. The mayor can request federal involvement, but as we know that would require a federal Executive Branch decision, unlikely because of the disdain between the political parties.
What’s the solution? It may be more reportage of the weekly statistics, but certainly it’ll take a lot more than that. This is a situation that local politics simply can’t afford to fix. Until the street gangs start invading, looting and killing “other” parts of the City, not much will be done.

I could be wrong on this, but I think that the reason we don’t see the outrage over civilians shooting civilians and civilians killing civilians that we see over the rare (but tragic) instances of police shooting unarmed civilians is that there is a hidden agenda beneath the protests and riots.
A huge percentage of young men in densely populated poor African-American communities get arrested for crimes and end up in prison, whether for a short time or a long time. This makes it much harder for these young men to succeed in the future, and it often destroys relationships, puts immense stress on women and children, and eats up what little money families have in bail, lawyer fees, restitution, and court costs.
I think the hidden agenda is finding a way to 1) pressure the police to stop searching young men and thus not catching them carrying drugs or weapons; 2) decriminalize as much drug use and sales as possible so the young men don’t get arrested and don’t go to jail; 3) make marijuana use completely legal, so fewer young men go to jail for having or selling it; 4) drastically change sentencing for crimes such as assault and larceny so fewer young men go to jail; 5) have social workers who can’t make arrests deal with family disputes, as these often lead to arrests. In short, the aim is for society to accept that criminality is part of the lives of these young men, but if we just don’t arrest them and convict them, they won’t really be criminals, even though they don’t change their lifestyles.
Thus, if we legalize marijuana, use will not decrease, and illegal selling probably won’t decrease, but fewer people will go to jail. If graffiti is legal, there will be even more of it, but people won’t be in jail for it. If cops don’t search people, they won’t catch people carrying illegal firearms. There will be even more guns carried, but fewer of those carrying will go to prison.
I think this is all insane, and probably you do, too, but I do think that’s why we don’t see more outrage.
In the spirit of Jonathan Swift’s famous satire “A Modest Proposal,” I offer this. Perhaps gang members should be allowed to register as such with the police. In exchange, they would be allowed to kill other registered gang members with impunity, but only them. Kill another registered gang member and you don’t even get arrested. Kill anyone else and pay the price. Society would benefit.

Most inner city shootings are gang and/or drug related. Unfortunately many innocents like the young girl and others are sometimes killed also. Gang and drug problems are primarily societal issues but also police issues. The flooding of America with easily accessible guns adds to the problem. Both avenues must be addressed to make progress on the shootings and killings.
I really get upset at comments like this. Chicago has had this problem for over 20 years why do you want to blame Trump why not Obama who was their senator from 1997-2004 and was President For 8 yrs why is he not the problem. He’s from there and yet he does nothing to help fix the problem. But haters like you what to twist your little minds into some how it’s the sitting president fault not the guy who was in office for 15 years who’s from Chicago .....put your hate down and open your mind so you can see what is happening.
Chicago has been a corrupt violent city since the Al Capone days 70+ years ago.

I am not from Chicago thankfully, but it still concerns me tha this is the becoming the "new normal". Murders and violent rioting not being reported on and seems to not concern the local leaders. If you have not heard the meeting held on the phone between the mayor and the council, they just curse one another, call each other names and the yelling. No business was discussed or agreeded upon, because they could not even talk to one another.
If you heard In Portland, the mayor is attacked on the streets trying to support the riots and the rioters go to his house he just decides to move not address the problem.
The violence is out of hand needs to be stopped.

Defund the police isn’t the answer. And Rudy Giuliani cleaned up New York. Feds offered to help with Chicago violence.
