Question for my fellow NEW home friends.
As you know you get a 10 year PARTS on the AC heat pump from CARRIER and a 5 year LABOR warranty from CARRIER.

Munns will sell you the last 5 years of labor (I think was 650.00) but you have to do it in the first 24 months of ownership. - which then takes you to 100% coverage for 10 years.

How many have done this extra coverage for the LABOR , last 5 years, anyone?
Worth It?

p.s. I hate extended to be 100% - but curious to see what others have done.

THANK YOU!

It's not worth it. Obviously, Munn's has priced it to make money. But, another thing to consider is that you will be locked in to having Munn's do all of your repairs for years 5 through 10. If your HVAC system fails in July, you want it repaired immediately. But, suppose Munn's can't come to your house for 2 or 3 days, or they come and need to order a part? I want the option to call someone else to do the repair. Munn's is good, but there are several other HVAC contractors available when you need them.

I had a friend that owned a car dealership. He said that there is not an extended warranty in any business that is worth the money.

I've been in retail sales where the company wanted me to push warranties on everything.

Companies make huge money on extended warranties. That should tell you that they're are not worth buying.

Insurance is great for protection against catastrophic problems like death or fire.

IMHO better to self insure for small stuff and think you are way ahead in long run

Only if you can not afford the cost of labor. Insurance is for losses you cannot afford.

The last time I paid for an extended warranty was in 1981, I'm so far ahead of the game now that I most likely will never have enough repairs to come close to what I saved. One thing I do is use my credit card on items that have warranties as it doubles the warranty period at no charge however it does not apply to cars, boats, etc.

We used Munn's only until the warranty ended and then until the AC went down (8 years total). Then we went to another local company and the repair tech told me how Munn's should have caught the problem easily on their annual checkup - but didn't.
Munn's is in this strictly for Munn's, not you. I'd be very hesitant to tie myself to them long term.

I had a problem with my AC and Munn’s sent out 3 different technicians and charged me over $300 and never fixed the problem!
I have had good luck with JC’s AC. He came after I gave up on Munn’s and fixed the problem for less than $100. I’ve also heard a lot of good things about Chuck Farrell.

Yes it's worth it if you have trouble with the unit,...no one knows...we just had a 5 year plan and it paid for itself.

Remember, Munn's and Sun Cool donated $$$$ to the corrupt commissioner's re-election attempt. I'll
never use either one for anything!

I have lived here 11 years. I have had 3 AC problems. Problem #1 capacitor on the out side unit went bad, Munn's came at 10 PM (called at 9)and changed it about $60. I bought another capacitor on Amazon for the next time $30 to have on hand. Problem #2 capacitor on outside unit bad again. I changed it myself and ordered another on Amazon. Problem #3 Motor on inside unit stopped working. There is a solid state unit mounted on the end of the fan motor. Munn's came within an hour and put a temporary unit on and came back 2 days later and made permanent repair. #3 was just out of warranty and cost $600 parts and labor. The part on Amazon cost about $300. In all the instances I was never without AC for more than a few hours. I did not have the extended warranty. #1 &2 happened at about 4 and 8 years. #3 happened at 10 and a half years. 2 of my neighbors had the #3 problem within warranty.

I have used the extended warranty and Munns for repair. If you need repairs from Munns they will be there within 24 hours 7 days a week 365 days a year, many times the same day.

The 10 year parts only applies to the original owner otherwise it drops to 5 years. Munns will prorate the labor warranty if you sell.

I have the same guarantee from SunKol. My compressor failed after 7 years. The part was under 10 year guarantee but they charge me $711.00 for diagnostic and replacement labor. It took just about 1 hour to replace. When I questioned unreasonable labor charge I was told it is a flat rate and I should have taken their extended labor guarantee.

If someone wants to flip houses buying the home warranty is a steal. Most can't buy and start fixing things but flippers find issues right away and use the warrentys. All my flippers made money off the home warrentys.

I have never been a fan of extended warranties, especially on automobiles. However, I have reconsidered that with the new cars which have dozens of computers that run everything from air pressure to lane changes, to cameras, to telling you when to pull over and take a break. If anything happens to any one of them, the fix can be $1000 or more.

Whenever someone tries to sell me an extended warranty I ask them is the warranty needed because you're selling me a piece of garbage that is the less quality. the request to buy usually fades away quickly

We bought it, have had 3 repairs covered under warranty. 2 most recent repairs were after hours (2 hour minimum at 1.5x normal rate) and past the 5 year point. IMHO it will pay for itself upon the next failure. Stuff breaks, skilled labor isn't cheap...

Chuck Farrell is not taking any new customers (at capacity) and suggests Kalos.
I had very good service from them - although they also have an "annual plan" that seemed pricey. I'll pay as I go.

EXCELLENT analysis most would not think about. It "can" save a few people once in awhile to have an extended warranty, but on the whole as you pointed out, these are NOT developed for YOUR benefit; they are developed to increase profits for the provider at little (comparatively) risk to them, of course ! It's a business. Keep that in mind when considering them anywhere. I suppose I have been lucky with past AC units here and in other locations (Lennox & Trane), but all have lasted more than 15 years ! If the unit has multiple problems, maybe faulty or a "lemon" to begin with, the serious problems would show up in the first 5 years provided by the manufacturer I would think ! Like everything, depends on your individual circumstances regarding the $650 cost vrs. the possible benefit ?

I too have found Chuck Farrell to be prompt, reasonable, and compassionate with a balance of running a business and making a living but also understanding of "reasonable" and running an honest business. So many friends and neighbors have experienced paying, paying, paying, and nothing ever actually fixed. It takes LONG time and a great deal of checking (and not just in on line social media) to find out the REAL truth about a company or workman's ethics, training, and skills in diagnosing problems in AC and many other areas !

I would say buy it if you can afford it. In five years who knows how expensive repairs could be and you might not be able to afford it easily then.

I am an AC contractor here in the villages and can state with 42 years of experience that a compressor cannot be changed in one hour. 3 hours minimum, usually 4 hours.

For that flat rate for compressor it’s not just labor. Includes shipping charges on compressor including back to carrier if they request it back, new refrigerant, new filter drier, brazing materials, nitrogen to leak test, vacuum pump oil and time to check out after installed.

Most companies up north charge over 1,000. 700 is a bargain.

FYI, for everyone on this post. As to the pricing of the 5 year labor warranty, Munns does not price it. The contract is purchased from AIG with Munns as the service company. Each time a warranty is ran Munns will submit a claim to AIG for reimbursement based on a set schedule.

I for one did not take the warranty when offered. My mistake. After 3 years everything went. It would have been an 8000 job. It was covered. Now I will have to pay 1200 from year 5 to 10 for labor. Well I for one will gladly pay it. They are prompt and honest.

We did it. It proved to be a good investment for us. The capacitor went out two times on our unit. The part was covered, but the labor would not have been. There is so much cost for them to come out, and then diagnosis and then getting part (s), and returning. Adds up quickly.

After five and a half years. My air conditioner quit on labor day. I had purchased the extended warranty within 14 days of closing on my home so I received a discount. Thankfully I had it because there was no charge on a bill that otherwise would have cost me $780 odd dollars. I know of other people who have used the warranty. I highly recommend.

My A/c drain line got plugged and A/C float switch was defective was not covered under warranty, price to replace it Munn’s $125 price on Amazon less than $15. I also have a rather large air filter on line price 2 for $54 last 6 months each Munn’s price on annual service call close to $100. I love Amazon.

seems like the vote is split 50/50 for and against

The best case scenario is being lucky enough to get an A/C unit that was built on a Wednesday and installed on a Wednesday.

The manufacturing environment is pretty much the same regardless of the product...

My FIL owned a car dealership...he always said that you want to buy a car that was built on a Wednesday.
Because the workers were still recovering from the weekend on Monday and missed things...on Tuesday they missed things because they were in catchup mode. By Wednesday they were hitting on all cylinders and everything was built to spec. Come Thursday they were beginning to think about the weekend and apt to miss a few things. By the time Friday rolled around they were totally into their weekend plans and not concentrating on work.
