I thought I was in an episode of The Twilight Zone because it looked like a cross between a hummingbird and a big bug.
It was near Fox Run Golf Course.

Weird, I'd never seen anything like it before either and saw one a couple of weeks ago when visiting sister-in-law in AL. Does anyone know what it is?
Wow, how neat! I'll have to be on the lookout for one of these creatures!

This gives some information on what I think I saw:

There seems to be quite a lot more of these kind of critters in Europe, Northern Africa and Asia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macroglossum_stellatarum

We used to see those Hummingbird Moths quite frequently in our back yard in New Mexico.

A few years ago we had one in my backyard in CT. Here is a pic of it from my Flickr. It is indeed a strange and wondrous creature.

...Doggie Doo Run Run, where it was getting nectar from the flowers in a tree that also housed some of the web of a banana spider. The female banana spider occupying this web was bigger than the clearwing hummingbird moth.
I sure was relieved when the hummingbird moth went on its way and escaped the spider's web.

We had them in Denver a few years back. They come infrequently. I was drinking a beer by the sage bush and about 6 of them came along sipping from the sage flowers and trying to get my beer. Yes, they are moth and a basic brown/beige color but they are shaped and act like a hummingbird.
