Walked past Codys at LSL this evening and see a waitress serving customers with mask covering chin and not mouth and nose. I am not a believer in wearing a mask while riding in your car, golf cart , bike, or simply walking where you can maintain distance. However, where masks are required, wear them properly.

Whether she licked her fingers or not she was going to touch what was put in the bag. You can’t hide from a virus. When are people going to get that? Sooner or later we’re all going to come in contact with this. Just like the flu or the common cold. You’ll either get it or you won’t. Take the masks off. Stop being paranoid. Did you say something to the employee? I would have pointed out what she did was not a safe practice. I would have also let the employee know that rubbing the plastic bag together with both hands will release the plastic and made it very easy to open it. I do that all the time in the grocery store with those darn plastic produce bags. Works every time.

I don't think you get the point the original poster made. The employee LICKED HER FINGERS to open the bag. The employee put saliva on her fingers then proceeded to touch the customer's purchases and the bag she was placing the purchases in to.
That would skeeve me out during normal times.

This discussion NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MASK. It has everything to do with proper hygiene. We are supposed to wash our hands frequently, especially those who deal with the public. What about licking the fingers don't you understand that is a breach of personal hygiene and safety to the people this employee was serving?

Amen to that. I refuse to live my life in fear. I wear the stupid thing when in public out of courtesy to others, but relish the day that this paranoia is behind us. I traveled internationally alot in my career. The first thing I did when I got on an airplane was wipe down the armrests and serving tray with an antiseptic wipe. I do the same at a grocery store on a cart and then use the wipe to clean my own phone and keys. Germs and viruses are everywhere. Just use some common sense and put the koolaide drinking behind us.

This is a pandemic. If you don’t know what that is then google the 1918 one. We are talking about a virus that can kill you especially if you have underlying conditions or if you are over 55 but even younger people have died. Our death toll is over 195,000 now. It is not the regular flu for which we have treatment or a vaccine. It is not the cold! If you think just don’t follow guidelines as it will get you sooner or later, then you are giving up what control you do have and that’s over your own behavior. The prediction of deaths now is 400,000 people by December. Hopefully we will have a vaccine by then. There are no guarantees that if you do everything right you won’t get it but if you don’t try your odds of getting it go up. Also, this can affect all your organs of your body and they don’t know the long term effects.

Just for a few minutes observe what all of us do with our masks. In a short 10 minutes we fidget/adjust with them several times. Hand goes to face to do this. When we take a drink or eat we lay them down in unsanitary places then put them with the collection of germs back on our face. Did you know you can blow out a candle with you mask on? Do you really think these masks are stopping anything coming out of your mouth? If your healthy these masks do more harm than good. If your in poor health and are at risk I am wondering if they are also doing more harm than good. Just my thoughts and observations on this mask mandate.

He gave my son a nasty scowl when he noticed him watching. Too many guns around TV to confront a nasty guy about sanitary procedures. AND, there are way too many edible products that can be accessed and touched. Beware...

Yes they are. When this first started I ran into this dilemma. I wound up taking all the produce bags I needed at once, licking my fingers and opening them all. One time. Then I got smart. I took a couple of sanitary wipes from my car, folded them up into squares and put them in the basket. When I needed to moisten my fingers I had a source and when I touched something suspicious I had a wipe.

During my first tour of duty in Korea, 1970 - 1971 I was stationed just a couple miles south of the DMZ. There were open ditches that served as street gutters and sewer lines. Rice paddies were fertilized with human waste. Infant mortality rate was very high. The air had an odor that would curl your socks up to your knees in the summer. I had to take a booster shot for yellow fever as there was a severe breakout of the disease that killed many Koreans. You could not eat food in the Korean villages and towns or drink the water as you could be infected with some very bad germs and viruses. Ice cubes in your Coke were a big no no. It would do our country good if people here were to spend time in a 3d world country. They would come back with a great appreciation for what we have.
Correction it was Cholera, not Yellow Fever. 50 years ago and it took a while to remember correctly.

It amazes me that the "entitled elitists" believe that everyone else should conform to their "scientific" standards, or their political views on EVERY subject.
That said, if you have a problem with how a business is run, then do not frequent it.
If you have a problem with how someone else wears their mask, what kind of mask ,quality of mask or the attitude of those not wearing a mask, then STAY home where you feel safe.
A note on those crazy produce bags: When this first started, I was wearing a mask and gloves in the stores to protect my wife. Just like everyone else on here, I consider my family first and everyone else last. Human nature, regardless of what you may disingenuously announce. Those thin protective gloves make opening the plastic produce bags simple. If you are so worried about the virus, you should be wearing the gloves anyway. So, problem solved. I no longer wear the gloves and I wear the thinnest mask I can find, so I can breath easier. I submit to the business rules out of courtesy for the private business owners, or I do not shop there.
I agree with those that talk about 3rd world countries. I have been to and lived in several. I have never used hand sanitizer in my lifetime until I lived in India. I got into a habit of washing my hands almost every time I touched anything. I have seen dead bodies on the side of the road. AMERICA is GREAT! AmeriCANS are spoiled.
Once again, if you don't like how a business is run, there are plenty of other places you can shop. Go for it.

old habits are hard to break...I struggle trying to open those darn plastic bags in the produce section at Publix
I always have hand sanitizer hanging on my purse. So, I use a tiny bit to wet my fingers to open those bags in the produce department. Never lick your fingers while you are out touching things that others may have touched.

Universal masking really has nothing to do with "staying safe" as you put it. Of course, universal masking will keep everyone safe but that is the side effect, if you will, of mitigating the virus. The best way we have to get our economy and our lives back to normal is to mitigate the virus. How do we do that? Our best tool, according to Dr. Redfield of the CDC, is wearing a mask. Along with social distancing and proper hand washing, we can get this virus under control. What will be the benefit of getting this virus under control, other than saving lives? Well, for one thing, we can all get our lives back to the normal we knew in 2019 and before.
Don't you want to see fans back in packed stadiums and ball fields for all sports? Don't you want to have all restaurants back in business with 100% occupancy? Don't you want to see schools open with no worries of children becoming sick with this virus and bringing it home to their families? Don't you want to be able to socialize in large crowds such as the town squares right here in The Villages? Don't you want to see music in the squares once again? How about getting our country's unemployment back on track and getting everyone back to work? Personally, I can't wait until the cruising industry can resume safely. I could go on and on. These things will not happen unless we, as a population, get this virus under control for good.
Universal masking can be done now as we all wait for an effective and safe vaccine. Science has proven universal masking WORKS. We should all do our part to get our country back to normal.

Our government today very strongly advised that even the shutting down to protect our country was the worst action in history, thus what I think you suggest about masking just ain't gonna happen. It doesn't matter what experts say about any of this, we will not mandate, and will mock any states that do.

Licking fingers! Yuck even before Covid world.. wonder if they wash their hands after the restroom break?
Why not? People would like a finger to separate bills when counting their money to pay me all the time. I never gave it a moment's thought the entire 40+ years I've been a cashier.
As for opening the bags - licking fingers is convenient, but not necessary. And that potato trick only works if you're in the produce aisle.
The way to open a bag if you can't find the friction with dry fingers: heat. Pinch the top of the bag between thumb and forefinger. Hold it there for around 6 seconds. The bag will then separate just fine.

I truly believe and have said this very early on in the pandemic......Shutting down the country was not necessary. We could have achieved the same result by mandating universal masking when in public. That would have needed to last a month or two and we would be done with this virus. Of course, the world would have had to participate too. Too much to ask? Maybe so but look what shutting down has done to our economy.

Was at Walgreen’s today and an older woman was checking customers out in Cosmetics.
All customers were wearing masks and keeping 6 feet apart.
I see the employee take her mask down, LICK her fingers to open the bag and bag the customer’s goods.
:ohdear:
Of course, you see this all the time, or at least I sure do, just watch people (waiters for instance, and many others, don't mean to pick on anyone). I am personally still examining (by looking up their credentials, research, etc.) the many very highly recognized doctors who do not believe masks, or lock downs, have any discernible effect on this type of virus, and also reading everything I can dig up on those who do and why (what research studies lead them to believe this actually has an effect on a virus), so I am open to both sides of the debate. I wear a mask when asked of me. I see so MANY instances (like the one described here), so many, and it leads me to believe we may just have too much faith that masks are the key to this. The finger licking, the pulling down of masks when speaking and then serving the food as they tug the masks back "up" but usually leaving nose out, for me, I am not convinced it's the masks that are important. I have this nagging feeling that one day, just like in the middle ages when people feared the plague was being carried in the night air, so plugged the doors and windows as best they could at NIGHT ! Someday I think my great grand children, or great great grand children will laugh about the "fetishes & charms" their grand parents believed would protect them from the 2020 plague. Not a "no mask, no way" person, but it does make me wonder if I am putting my confidence in something my formal education tells me, no way, there is no "scientific" evidence this type of homemade "mask" works and certainly not when you see how both adults and children deal with them. But, I don't resist, I just laugh at myself, not others :confused::confused:

I try to find a piece of product that might be wet or touch something in my cart that has condensation on it to moisten my fingers.

Those plastic bags are a pain to open and understand what one must do to open the darn things. Got to be a better way
Stu, to get those pesky produce bags open go over to where they have the produce that gets misted (parsley, green onions etc) and find a wet spot to dampen your fingers (not on the produce itself). Works every time.

Nope, as long as "sports" is political I will NEVER watch one again. No skin off my back and I am sure they don't care either. If a millionaire, athlete elitist wishes to tell us that we enjoy white privilege, that COPs are bad or even to protest bullying in grade school, I have no use for them. They can make a dam* commercial about it. I will stand for the American flag only and I will stand for the National Anthem only. Not some contrived biased black anthem or any other nation's anthem.
Regarding masking, I wear one solely for my family's ease. I care about others but not enough to change my way of live, just because they feel stupid enough to take chances with their own lives and expect me to conform to their standards. Like I said, if you are worried about someone not wearing a mask, stay home. It's your right. It is NOT your right to demand someone else conform to your fears, regardless of how you "scientifically" justify it. No law, no requirement, period.

There are many businesses, retail stores, pharmacies, grocery stores, big box stores, medical facilities, etc. etc, that REQUIRE you to wear a mask when entering their establishment. Their establishment, their rules. Follow the rules of the establishment or don't go into said establishment. There are rules.....no shirt, no shoes, no mask, no service.
You may want to live your life like there is no pandemic going on but you are the one who just may not be able to enter establishments that REQUIRE masks. I surely hope you will not be one of those people I have seen on the internet throwing tantrums when requested by employees to don a mask.
Good luck with your pre-covid life. Problem is we are all still in the middle of a pandemic.

I think if we had to use our real names on sites like this - people wouldn't be so rude and condescending to each other.

Horrible post. That’s why almost 200,000 Americans are dead. Me, myself and I.
Half of them in Village Roundabouts
