We are amazon driven, so we have an Emerson that connects with Alexa. Very happy to control our homes remotely.
Nest does have some features that we do not have, it senses when you walk by, so keeps track of when you are gone, and adjusts temp. Even though I can use my phone app, I can ask Alexa to change whatever I need done.
So when I Ask Alexa to start my car at 3am and it’s 30degrees, I can have Alexa turn up the thermostat so it’s warmer in the house when I arrive

I'd like to have that old round Honeywell model
between the smart phone, our smart television and our smart irrigation system controls I already feel dumber than a 5th grader
I've mastered the popcorn setting on the microwave, I have "Mr. Coffee" down pat and I can work the dishwasher....but frankly, I'm reluctant to introduce any more 'smart' stuff to my household until my grandkids can come down

I replaced mine with a nest several years ago. There was aspects of it I truly hated, like not being able to see at a glance what the current temperature was in the house. I kept thinking about replacing it with an Ecobee, but never did. We just recently purchased a new home in Monarch Grove and it appears all new construction is having an Ecobee installed. I've been very pleased with it so far. It does everything my Nest did AND I can look at it and tell what the current temperature is. Another feature, which I haven't used yet, is you can add an 2nd unit in another room where you might be having trouble regulating the temperature.

We had Ecobees in two properties. Don't have one here but will probably install one at some point. We really liked them.

Yes, but I got an Ecobee. Took me 10 minutes to swap out and as a plus it has Alexa built in.

Just to add, at least as of last year, the reason I chose the Ecobee was Nest had no way to just do a HOLD on any temperature, it always had to be in program mode. There was a lot of complaining about this lack of feature which was why I chose the Ecobee which can HOLD at any temp as long as you want in order to bypass the smart features IF YOU WANT. Nest had no option for that. Maybe it has changed in the last year but I doubt it. The explanation on how to "fake" that feature was quite convoluted.

Can Alexa tell you the current actual space temperature in your house? That is the most critical,IMO to determine if there is an HVAC issue

Can Alexa tell you the current actual space temperature in your house? That is the most critical,IMO to determine if there is an HVAC issue It will tell you whatever the thermostat is reading as will the Ecobee app and let you change temp by voice or control anything else that is Alexa compatible. I don't find the Alexa feature that important a feature except it has a decent speaker in it so I sometimes use it to play music. :) There are also small optional wireless sensors you can put in various rooms to adjust the temp when it senses what room you are in if that room is above or below the set temp. We don't use 1/100th of it's"smart" capabilities.

Honeywell has several Models that are Alexa / Google capable.
No subscriptions required.
We just had the Honeywell T10 installed.
Totally simple and their app is excellent.
Contact Michael Labanz (member on this forum) he installs them and shows you all the info.

I have thought about it but with the irregular schedule my wife and I keep it seemed impractical. It is not like when we went to work and were away from the house for 10 hours during the day. We are in and out all day long and pass the t-stat when going to bed at night. What is the advantage if you live here?

I replaced my carrier thermostat with a Honeywell WiFi thermostat. Required installing a new multiple wire cable between air handler in the garage to the thermostat. The carrier thermostat installed when the house was built used a 2 wire cable between air handler and the carrier thermostat. I could have swapped the carrier thermostat for a WiFi capable thermostat, I did not want to be locked in with carrier only options.

When I had mine installed, the electrician had to do a small rewire in the garage. I used Munns and their package including Nest, installation and 2-year warranty was great.

We replaced our thermostat with the Nest about three years ago. It’s very simple to install. As seasonal residents we can control the temperature and humidity remotely with the Nest app on our I phone. It’s very slick, have not had any problems.

We had Nest for two years and found it frustrating to use. It is not easy to adjust manually. I'm comfortable with technology but thought the thermostat was unnecessarily complicated. As noted in another response, you cannot set a specific temperature but only a range (which admittedly can be limited to 3 degrees). It seemed that the furnace was kicking in more often than necessary cooling, then heating, then cooling. We are pleased to have moved to a house without a Nest and would not consider one again. To be fair, perhaps an updated model has worked out some of the bugs.

My husband installed Ecobee in our new home. No need to install a second unit in another room. We have sensors in every room and it can be set so it only senses temps in rooms that you are occupying. Can be changed for all different times of the day via computer or phone app. We're very happy with it.

I have an Ecobee in my home in The Villages and a Nest in my other home. Installed them both myself, fairly easy process using their respective apps. If you are doing the install yourself, take pictures of the wiring connection on the back of your existing thermostat before removing. If you have a problem installing, you can always look at the picture and return to the original thermostat.
I like them both, would pick the Ecobee over Nest if I had to choose one. Both work with Alexa, and I have routines set that shut my lights off, turn my speakers off, and lower the thermostat to my preferred sleeping temperature all by saying "Alexa, I am going to sleep". How did we ever live without this?

I’d go with an ecobee. I had a a Nest for the last ten years. It never really learned my routine, so I ended up just programming a fixed schedule. And not having a simple “hold temp” function can be frustrating at times. I think Google let them wither after they bought Nest. Not much new in quite a while.

Yes. Very Easy. Does tell you current temp as well as set temp. Works well with our phone when we are away. LOVE it! Gives me a report on how we are doing with the temps, how efficient, etc. Communicates with Alexa. WONDErFUL! Have Nest doorbell, too! also great!

What smart sprinkler system ? Can you explain ? I see sprinklers running when it’s pouring rain

As long as I live, I'll NEVER allow a so called "smart" device control or provide security for my home. No Alexa, Siri or any similar type of technology for me, as it allows "big brother" to listen in.......whether or not you realize it. All these smart technologies are being hacked and you will end up with absolutely no privacy or security.
As one of our founding fathers once said .....He who gives up a little bit of freedom for security, deserves neither freedom nor security.
I'm low tech and old fashioned, and happy!

Smart sprinkler controllers coordinate with local weather stations. The use the forecast to predict what precipitation might occur, what has occured, what temperature it has been what the evaporation has been for your soil type, what the irrigation zone needs (plants or grass, what type of grass), how all of these factor into the slope of your lot.
They change the irrigation time based upon the calendar. It is not uncommon for my controller to make 40 or more changes on some months. Dumb controllers installed in new homes do not do this.
Mine is a Rachio controller, there are other brands as well but do not use as many factors to control irrigation.
It's possible, I guess, for the Russians to hack into my controller to water my lawn but I think it is more likely that meteor will hit my house.

What smart sprinkler system ? Can you explain ? I see sprinklers running when it’s pouring rain I am using a RACHIO 3 SMART IRRIGATION system. I have a weather station on my roof which is synced (monitored) by the "smart sprinkler" through Wundergound.com and when a specified amount of rain falls (or even when wind speed is so high the wind will blow the water away from the lawn) it skips watering. Smart Sprinkler Controllers & Natural Soil Treatments | Rachio (https://rachio.com/)
Both the sprinkler system and thermostat can all be controlled through Alexa or other similar apps but I prefer using their native apps..

I love it and can monitor from anywhere in the world Of course it can. If it couldn't see what the temp is in your house how could it act as a thermostat ? That goes without saying (wait! I said it! :) ). What NEST can't do for some silly reason according to Nest/Google is a FIXED HOLD on a chosen temperature until you want to end the hold or even indefinitely. You have to set it as multiple small programs. Nest's (now Google's) excuse for that is that it is a "smart" thermostat and why would you want it not to be smart! Evidently many people over the years want it to be dumb at certain times with the push of a button.

With at least one brand you "tether" it to your phone. You or you and your wife leave your home to go about your day and the temp changes as you leave the area, it starts cooling before you arrive. "Tethering" take three taps on your phone, one time for as long as you own it.
To you it is always the same temp, no changing needed but you save on utilities.
It's like the automatic transmission on your car, completely unnecessary and far more complex than a manual yet it is wildly popular.

LOL! So true. . . yes, a hacker can change thermostats, can work to get into cameras, etc, but unless they have specific targets with high value to steal, and high value is the key, it isn't worth it, likewise many cloud software companies have a security system to watch for hackers, which is more and more common to have internal security services. . .
To that end, HACK is a great ETF of security stocks, which will be in demand now for evah!

Two models a neat capacitance touch screen high tech one, don't get that one.
100.00 model the push buttons, simple. Harder for the technical challenged to screw up. Has a neat offset feature. For the temp. If you don't see the advantage of that PM me. I am not interested in the peanut gallery's comments on offset.

Has anybody installed an Ecobee in place of the Carrier Edge thermostat? There are the 5 wires in the wall behind the thermostat, but the Carrier Edge only uses 2 in some proprietary nonsense designed to make life difficult. Just trying to figure out how to rewire the control box by the heat pump to get the Ecobee in. The wires on the right go into the heat pump and are attached to more wires. All the necessary wires appear to be there, they just need to be reconfigured. The red and blue on the lower left run to the thermostat.

Bilyclub, we did ours last year. We used Good Guys Heating and Air (Mike) 352-805-0035, who did it at a very reasonable cost. All the wires are there, but because of the interface the previous thermostat used, I didn’t want to risk screwing it up. Extremely happy with the Ecobee. One of the best things about it is if I leave for work and forget to set the temp to a higher setting, I can do it right from my phone.

Not sure most of the current thermostats can't do that. We have a Nest, probably 4 years now and monitor and change (if necessary) from our phone, even from Germany last year. The founder of NEST was one of the developers of the first three iphones. He left (don't think it was his choice, you know how Jobs was) and started NEST then sold it to Google for 3+ billion.

Never did see the reason for a so called smart thermostat. Ours is set at 75. Push a button if we want heat or another button for cool. We leave for an extended time, we just push the temp buttons up or down. If it's nice and the house is open, I push the off button. We saved a lot of money by not getting sucked into the "smart" technology. I know it's a lot of work pushing those buttons maybe 5 or 6 times a year, but I need the exercise.

It's not so much the algorithm stuff, but the ability to know what the temp is inside and the ability to adjust it when you're not there. Why waste energy when you don't have to.

Not sure sucked in is the right term, maybe deciding to live in the past not grow would be a better statement. My Dad was the same way, mostly because he couldn't learn the technology and always was frustrated with it. Nothing wrong with that, but to suggest that anyone that embraces new technology is sucked in, to me is a tad judgemental and rude.
