My husband and I went to the Chop House in LSL tonight to celebrate our anniversary. All was well until the bill came. Their grouper special: a piece of grouper, plus either 3 shrimp or 3 scallops, and 2 sides: $43!! I asked the waitress why she didn’t tell us the price when she described the special (I would never have ordered it if I had known it was $43), she said they only tell you prices if you ask. So I am posting this to advise you that if you order a special at the Chop House, ask the price before ordering!! We will never go there again after this experience.

Sorry, but we always ask price on specials, if not listed on a board or menu.
If you look at their menu, there are items at market price. Would you not ask what the market price was before you ordered? Their dinners are in the $30 range and up.

We live at the beach part of the year and I frequent the local fish market. Grouper is usually about $23-26 a pound depending on when you buy it and what type of grouper.

2a "Market Price" is one thing, but a standard 'special' is another.

3. But I'd rather be looked upon as "cheap" than feel 'gouged', as the OP.

Are they not proud of the price they charge? No. Not a selling point, so . . . Several restaurants have opened and closed in this location over the last several years. What's the "over & under" on this one???

Chop House always delivers on quantity, taste, presentation, service and ambiance. Best restaurant around but certainly not cheap. You should have asked the price. That said, happy anniversary.

Exactly. I do the same. Would you buy anything in life without knowing the cost? Plus, this place isnt your local diner so why would you expect cheap prices.

Chop House is our favorite restaurant in the Villages. We go about once a month for “special Occasions “ and date night.
Expensive yes but the service, quality and delightful ambiance is worth it to us.

Happy anniversary and may you be blessed with many more!! That said, the Chop House is a higher end restaurant (though maybe not the most expensive). You know, because everything is ala cart, or just about everything. I would ask the price as generally when ordering something I'll have an A or a B just in case. I don't always order by what it will cost but surprises are never fun neither. Whenever we've been there we've been quite satisfied with the food, the service and NO surprises with what it cost.

Unfortunately lots of restaurants pull that scam. Specials are often a way to get rid of unwanted or leftover food....they probably had the grouper for a few days and came up with a special to get rid of it. Rule of thumb - order off the menu.

$43 for Grouper, shellfish and 2 sides is a very reasonable price to pay for a meal at Chophouse. You should always ask the price because some believe that the special is in the price and most restaurants look upon specials as a special, off menu offering.

Almost always restaurants will tell you the specials and not include price. Have learned to ask and notice that prices for specials usually higher than most of the menu.
Would not be surprised the server gets an extra buck or two for getting people to order the special.

Seems like a high price but the quality and size of the items should be considered to justify the price , if large portions OK no reason to complain ,if a great meal ,no reason to complain ,just not a reason to stop enjoying this restaurant. In the future .ask the price it’s your money.

My husband and I went to the Chop House about a week ago to celebrate a special day. Waiter told us right away about their special that night. A 9 ounce filet mignon and 6 ounce lobster tail with 2 sides for $55 each. Price given upfront. It was devine. Perfectly cooked. If he had not told us the price we would have asked. We have no regrets. You get what you pay for. How many special days do we have left to celebrate in this life?

Same thing happened to me at a restaurant in Indianapolis. They had a lake perch fish and chips which was quite expensive for a special. We continued to go there because of the live music but I never ordered fish and chips again. I did find that I could order a grouper sandwich instead of the grouper dinner and save $10. Same fish just smaller portion and only 1 side. If you really like the place you can look for other ways to save.

Someone mentioned that most high end restaurants don't list prices. That is not true in my experience. I am from the Pacific Northwest where you can expect to spend $200.00 for an excellent meal out for 2 without wine or drinks and the prices are clearly listed on the menu. These restaurants are proud of their offerings and know they are worth every penny. I will not eat at a restaurant that makes me ask the prices, except when "market pricing" is stated. If they cater to the wealthy or upper income they have no respect for them if they require them to ask the price of a meal, this is demeaning, or even worse if they assume the patron doesn't care what it costs. Most wealthy people got that way by knowing where their money was going, not by just handing it over blindly. Believe me, I know.
I do agree that this lady and her husband should have asked the price before ordering. It's a shame this spoiled their fun anniversary night out.

I agree it is a bad practice for the restaurant to do this. At one restaurant that I will not name, the owner instructs the staff to do the same. The staff reports they are not comfortable with the practice.
Where it becomes nasty is when you are taking people out to dinner and they do not know what they are getting into. Do you warn them. The owner I mention, offers cheese on the free side salad. The staff says, "Do you want cheese on your salad?" When the bill comes there is a three dollar charge. When you hear it mentioned to your guests, do you warn them of the scam. Everyone thinks it is a free option when the question is asked.

The Chop House as well as Blue Fin are pricey, but the food is great. Being from the NYC area we are used to high prices for dinner. I still have not found a $20+ martini in TV. Grouper fishing is not a long season, so I'm told, so it is pricey, but good. When something on the menu says "market price" don't be shy, ask the price, or pay the price. not always, but often "specials" is a way for the chef to use up food that is getting close to having to be tossed
...that said the food is still good, requires the same amount of prep as any meal and is going to be priced fairly
I often go with the house specialties (not the specials)....especially if it's a venue that we don't visit often...that way I know that the kitchen has made the dish often enough and even if there's a brand new 'line cook' on that evening it will come out right

I think the word “Special” and $43 grouper is an oxymoron. “Special” is a term associated with ham & eggs $3 at a diner so your surprise is understandable.
However Chops is a classy place so $43 is not unreasonable just the way they framed it. Lesson learned.

Are they not proud of the price they charge? No. Not a selling point, so . . . Several restaurants have opened and closed in this location over the last several years. What's the "over & under" on this one???
Every time I see anything where the price is no immediately revealed, I think the same thing. Why are they hiding the price? Are they afraid to show it? Are they afraid that you won't order it because of the price? Always ask the price if it is not shown. Nothing cheap about that.
The other thing is ads that take forever trying to justify the price before the show it. I get less than halfway through those before I think, "If they have to work this hard to justify the price, it's probably not worth it."

The problem is that a lot of customers think of "Specials" of some kind of deal. Stores define "Specials" as things they've bought a lot of and want to sell. They are usually also very high profit margin items.

I've had grouper and there is nothing special about it. I didn't know it was supposed to be expensive. I think I would choose a cheaper fish.
Also, why is lump crab meat is more expensive than claw crab meat? It all comes from the same crab.

It is standard practice at fine restaurants to not tell you the price of specials unless you ask. You can always ask. The idea is that these aren’t usually special prices (discounts) but special meals not usually available. I don’t know much about the price of fish. Are groupers generally expensive? I do know enough to not order a “fish special” on Sunday night, as they are just trying to get rid of fish they will have to throw away the next day because it is several days old. If you want fresh fish, don’t buy it on Sunday.

To me a top-rated steak house or a Taco Bell are all the same - they are to be avoided like the Plague - which is more than an expression today. We are literally in a Plague and all personal actions like going out to eat need to be individually evaluated with the risks involved considered. The restaurants have less customers so they are forced to jack up their prices. And a waitress is not going to brag about a "special" when it is not really "specially" a good deal. Their manager probably tells them to NOT mention the cost unless ASKED.
I personally am prepared to wait 1 or 2 YEARS to go out to a restaurant. I will wait for medical science to lower the risks of ANY indoor activity with groups of people. We are far from that. Some individuals will be willing to take those risks, which are increasing and not yet quantifiable. I also would NOT be buying any stock in restaurant chains. Good luck to you. And when you go to your restaurant, may you go with God.

Can't believe anyone would order a "special" without asking the price, especially on a high dollar entree like grouper.
I once knew a restaurant in Sarasota where the server announced the "Specials of the Day". If you asked the price and said "I'll have that $39 Grouper Special", you got charged $39. If you didn't ask the price, the charge on the bill was $43. (Just an example of DUAL pricing). After customers complained, the state shut them down for that AND for adding an additional item to your bill AFTER the bill was presented to you. The original bill said $71.35 but the charge slip was now $79.90. When you asked the server for the original itemized bill back to check, they would say they throw it away. "Get me the manager!" The manager intervened and took the $8 off and blamed the server for "hitting the wrong key". !NOT! It was the manager that was doing all the billing and HE was the one changing the prices on patron's checks. And you thought the server was guilty. NO! The restaurant was forced to close by the state, I hope the manager got black-listed and fined. It went on for years before enough people complained.
Sad! Always ask the price (and write it down) - even on the cocktail menu. You don't want $11 Manhattans on the Rocks plus $1 for the Ice!!! One of our Country Clubs was doing that for a while, charging extra for ice!!!
Another trick is $10 off coupons, They total the meal with tax, then subtract the $10 from the grand total. That's wrong and the State Revenue Department should be notified. You only pay tax on the money that changes hands. The coupon comes off first. Tax is charged on the net amount.

Communicating prices for Specials follows the Wine model. If you ask for a recommendation on a good wine you will receive many options but rarely pricing. Right or wrong, this is a common strategy by most fine restaurants. The burden is on the consumer to ask for this information before making a decision. I understand your frustration but I think it is harsh to forever penalize a restaurant for a mistake you made. Easier to ask the price up front than to argue the bill at the end.

What should the price of the meal in question be? This place isn't the snack bar in a Bowling Alley. Anything I've ever ordered that say's Market Price is usually $50 and upward. I really don't know what your meal is worth. I've never had Grouper.
I'm sorry for the OP getting hammered by so many about an observation they made about their meal. Probably should have asked first about the price but not a mortal sin committed by not doing so. Maybe getting seated and socially distancing was more important than asking for the price.
Happy Anniversary! Know that you are not alone. I had a problem with my first meal at The Chop House. It was a piece of Chateaubriand that was like Alpo. To be fair it was a blip because I never had any other problem there again that I can recall. My replies from others ranged approximately as yours did. Someone even told me that Chateaubriand wasn't even on the menu. People have Beer Muscles, I've never had anyone give me a rough time in person around The Villages. Just when they are typing. Sorry for your troubles.
I wish we could stir up tomwed or Chatbrat for their opinions on this issue.

After looking at The Chop House menu online, I have to agree that the OP has a very valid complaint. At $43, the "special" grouper entree would be more expensive than any other priced entree on the menu. And, it would be more than $10 above every entree, except the rack of lamb. So, in this case, the term "special" means that they purchased the highest priced entree on the menu. I think that the restaurant clearly deceived them by not telling them the price of the grouper entree, and by referring to it as a "special".

Grouper is not on their menu. It was a specially prepared entree' for last evening. ChopHouse does not do reduce prices on their menu as specials. Grouper is an expensive fish. In the fish markets it runs around 26-27 per pound.

I'm not arguing about the price of grouper. But, The Chop House made a customer unhappy by not disclosing that they were ordering the most expensive entree on the menu. Obviously, the customer was disappointed, and the restaurant may have lost a customer, just to make a few quick bucks. Not a good business decision, in my opinion.

I'm sorry this happened.
People who have abundant money probably don't ask the price.
People who only go-to higher end restaurants for only special occasions feel the price for such offers will be in line with other items on the menu. Most midrange restaurants have special dishes that are a special deal.
I have over the years been with others at restaurants that have had this same shock, be it over the meal or a drink.
Do not let the naysayers here put you down, they really know not what they say as they have not walked in your shoes.
If the food is good and you like this restaurant, continue to go. Only we who have learned to ask prices, in such places, will able to enjoy such special days even after we pay the bill.
I wish you the best of what this year of marriage brings to both of you.
Hugs....

Unfortunately lots of restaurants pull that scam. Specials are often a way to get rid of unwanted or leftover food....they probably had the grouper for a few days and came up with a special to get rid of it. Rule of thumb - order off the menu.

They could have asked for the price, and probably should have. But, all of the other entrees on the menu were priced significantly lower than the special grouper. So, I think the restaurant should have alerted them to that fact. The big loser in this case is the restaurant. They made a small profit, but they did not satisfy their customer, and probably other customers as well.

I understand how you feel about the price, as it was an unpleasant surprise, and that’s happened to me, too!
A few thoughts on this: Some higher end restaurants Iike the Chop House typically don't bother to add the price after the server has recited a Special. Frankly, I think they should, but I always ask, even though it is a bit awkward.
I also think that it was a reasonable price for what you got — grouper, 3 shrimp plus 2 sides. Fresh fish and seafood doesn’t come cheap, and many restaurants do really mark it up.
And not to sound preachy, but it was a special occasion and not a typical dinner out, so that should be taken into account. Many restaurants fail to inform their guests what the prices are for the food that their ordering. Our town squares often have outdoor shopping where goods are displayed without prices listed. If consumers have to ask for a price, the probability of sales decreases. If surprises occur after the transaction is completed with the consumer not fully aware of the price in the first place, future business will suffer. I have seen studies showing as much as 47% loss in sales for merchandise that is not priced. Vendors and restaurants need to think before they open their doors.

And when you go to your restaurant, may you go with God.
It is impressive that you have the belief that you will be around in 1 to 2 years to enjoy eating in a restaurant and also have the belief that if you stay locked in your house you will not be subject to some other disease that will claim your life. It is also interesting that you must not feel that you will be missing out on any joys that you might have experienced if you stuck your head outside and celebrated life during that time instead of fear.

Why didN’t you ask the price? I never order a special or anything that I do not know the price of first.
Reading these comments reminds me of proper phone etiquette: Never start a question with the word “Why” when trying to help someone or assist in assuaging feelings that have been hurt. You’ll only succeed in making the person to whom you’re speaking feel worse.

That is reasonable considering grouper is $25 a lb raw
Restaurants don’t pay that prices normal portions for fish are 3 to 6 ounces. Here in New England purchasing lobster off the boat $4 pound @ market $8 pound in restaurants market prices start @ $35 pound

I’m trying to understand the first watch complaint , do you really need to know the price of a coffee before you decide to buy it, and do you prefer only the one cup so you can share it. I’ve never gone into a breakfast place when the server wasn’t right over with pot and would say coffee., I don’t think in my 81 years I ever heard someone say how much is it first

It's interesting to note the Chop House website. Main page shows three steak photos which are stock photos from the internet. One of them appears to be of a bone in New York which they don't even have on the menu. The other two can be found on the web if you search stock steak photos. One would think they would have enough pride in their products to show some actual photos of what they serve. So their web site is misleading as to what they offer.
Chop House at Lake Sumter (https://www.chophousedining.com/)
Chop House only offers three steak cuts. One choice filet in two sizes and two prime steaks, a New York strip and a Delmonico, whatever that is. And of course, no prime rib.
Most steak houses typically state their best steak is a bone in rib eye, which of course Chop House doesn't offer. In addition, steaks at typical high end steak restaurants are broiled in high temperature infra red grills. Chop House pan fries all their steaks.
So other than the name, it's not much of a "Chop House".

OMG! You let a few bucks ruin your dinner? What is it you will have to give up for having this meal? Enjoy what you have, be thankful you have it and learn from your mistake..

I'm sorry OP got so slammed by so many. Lotta crabby people here.
I guess by "special," Chop House meant they made something different that day. "Special" used to mean something at a good price, perhaps less than usual menu items.

WOW ! I am a Grouper-A-Holic (or WAS ! ) at $43 for one small piece (and so many try to pass off so many other "meaty", "solid" fish as Grouper too). Think my last pound bought on the coast to take home was $27, so figuring most restaurants need to double that to make a profit after paying the chef(s), the servers, the rent, the AC, the cleaning people, the dishwashers.... well, you get the point. Probably not going to get any REAL grouper dinner for under $30 anytime soon ! Guess I'll just continue to go to Port Canaveral to Grill's for my grouper... sure hope they don't raise the prices or change out the real thing for something similar over there! While on the topic, anyone know where one can get genuine pompano when in season ?:pray:

Understand that food cost should be no more than 30% of sales price of the item.
That of course would include any sides, salad etc.

...this is one of my (many) pet peeves.
1. Stating the price of 'specials' should really be standard practice.
2. I always felt that it sounded "cheap" to ask the price of a Special.
2a "Market Price" is one thing, but a standard 'special' is another.
2b. One can feel 'cheap' asking, especially in a Group lunch/dinner.
3. But I'd rather be looked upon as "cheap" than feel 'gouged', as the OP.
re #2, perhaps it's a psycholgical matter employed for profit $$$.
Buyer beware, and don't be shy.
.
.
Have always heard restaurants who do not have their servers quote the price of the specials do it for a reason. 1) It is usually a more expensive price than run of tbe menu and 2) They know people feel awkward to ask about pricing because it makes them look cheap.
So never hesitate to ask. You are the one paying the bill. If they don't quote the price, I usually refer to Rule 1 and don't order it on principal. But if it sounds amazing, I do ask and decide if it seems worth it.

I see your point about how a “Special” might mean a good deal or cheaper price. But not so at a high end restaurant or steakhouse. Everytime I’ve seen a “special” on those types of menus, it’s been More expensive, not less, than other entrees. I'm sorry OP got so slammed by so many. Lotta crabby people here.

I don't know what you mean by high end restaurants, but we live in The Villages. Almost every restaurant is always advertising lunch specials, happy hour specials, two for one meal specials, all-you-can eat specials, and every other kind of special. Some of the country clubs and other restaurants have regular weekly specials. I don't think anyone in The Villages would hear about a restaurant special and think that they are going to pay a higher price. I agree with the OP that the Chop House missed the boat by referring to their highest priced meal and calling it a special.

There are 3 restaurants that would be considered "high end" in The Villages: Blue Fin, Chop House and Wolfgang Puck. Personally for me, I know going to one of them any special is probably going to be a higher prices entree. I have no problem asking the price and deciding if I want to order it. A special at one of these isn't the same as a special in most of the restaurants here.

Maybe in Hooterville and Petticoat Junction, but once you get out into a somewhat more sophisticated environment (such as Secaucus, N.J.:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:), a special is simply an entre that is not on the usual menu, and is likely priced equal to or higher than the regular menu. It is NOT by default a cheaper meal.

But, I would just point out that Blue Fin often advertises special meals and drinks at reduced prices, and they refer to them as specials. So, I don't agree that a "special" is probably going to be a higher price. And, I think that The Rose Plantation may be considered a high end restaurant, but I am frequently getting emails from them offering me a special, lower priced meal.

OK, let's settle this the easy way and define a "special" as a non-usual menu item that may cost more, the same, or less than the usual items:coolsmiley::coolsmiley::coolsmiley:

Sometimes people are shy to ask for things. In the grouper case, the guest should have asked, because he was very upset with the outcome. But it’s not always easy to ask, especially when celebrating a wedding anniversary. I just think he was genuinely shocked. Lesson learned, he’ll ask next time. BTW— as a courtesy, the server should have been trained to Tell the price of the Special, to alleviate worry. Not trying to be rude, but why didn't you ask for price on Special? Seems like you were worried about price to begin with? Hopefully you still had a nice Anniversary

typoWe live at the beach part of the year and I frequent the local fish market. Grouper is usually about $23-26 a pound depending on when you buy it and what type of grouper.
Right, same here. Don't think I've ever got a pound for $23, but few weeks ago over at Atlantic and Charlies was $29 a pound. Up a bit from the average $26 I was used to. The REAL consideration is, yes, when you buy fresh, YOU have to prepare it, but the reward is, when you purchase fresh you can tell if it is the REAL thing (not monk or some other imitation right ?), but once cooked, sauced, served in a restaurant.... well, few in Florida are eating the genuine article, but many are paying for it that's for sure !
