:icon_wink: There are several..... which one are we bashing or all of them? So far (according to the "other" news site) Bichara Blvd (Lady Lake) and Southern Trace.
Some highlights from the 2 locations per the V News:
A spray bottle containing a toxic substance that was not labeled. (That is scary).
There was raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food in a walk-in cooler.
The inspector also found that there was no soap at an employee hand-wash station.
The hand-wash sink for employees was not available due to items being stored in the sink.
At least there were no roaches or animal droppings, just don't spray the grill with an unlabeled spray bottle of toxic substance by mistake.

I don't make excuses for anyone BUT, I can tell you we have been to Darrells on Wedgewood Ln several times, and probably due to Covid they are extremely shorthanded. Max two servers, one cook, and maybe a busser. They work very hard, they do the best they can, and there are probably some things that get overlooked. I'll leave it at that...

Having been certified in food safety at the state level , those violations are easily reversed and are the result of everyone being in a hurry , they are serious if continue daily but in reality are very minor fixes that can easily be remedied in a matter of minutes, so I’d not be afraid to eat there because I’m sure they have been corrected within minutes of the check, temp violations are extremely more serious as are pest infestation

One begets the other. Today, a restaurant must be squeaky clean to even be open for 25% occupancy to avoid virus infections between customers. To flunk, after being closed for so long says there’s a management problem.

From Darrell email to me: I do see how disturbing this sounds, Although I can assure you that it is made to sound worse than it actually was.
We use a RTU (ready to use) sanitizer for our tables and food service areas. One of our servers made up some vinegar water in an empty bottle to clean windows with and did not properly change the label but was not using that for sanitation purposes.
The thing that they do not post is the very next day when the inspector returned it was graded 100% with Zero violations.

I think Darrell's is the best place in the Villages for breakfast. I've been all over the world, and let me tell you .. Darrell's has the BEST BACON in the world! And onions in the homefries?. Fantastic !! (but you have to order them that way).
Cleanliness ? Just fine for me. (A good clue of kitchen cleanliness is by checking the rest rooms. Clean rest room = clean kitchen.)
Covid?? not worried about it one bit.
I'll be at Darrell's (SS) tomorrow for sure.

The number of violations is interesting. I tried two locations in the area quite a long time ago. Both experiences bothered me a great deal. I tend to observe, probably more than the average consumer, little things you know. The restrooms of places give a good hint always in my opinion, but I don't judge just on that. But when you really watch the little things you can get a good idea of the standards, another is watching the staff that stands behind a restaurant on their smoke breaks.... that can also be a very interesting observation. In one location I saw a waitress drop some things off a tray she was taking to a table to set it up. I doubt many others noticed when she stopped, picked up what appeared to be tableware wrapped in a napkin, and out of curiosity, I watched. I suppose thinking she would go deposit it in a bus pan. But no, continued to the table and set it up ? When I see those little things, always makes me wonder what else is going on that you can't see ? Not a big fast food patron, but sometimes I wonder if maybe those establishments are (somewhat ?) cleaner and "safer", than many full service restaurants. More seems to be insight, but that does not tell the whole story either ! Son once worked in country club (in another state) where blood from raw chicken was allowed to drop down onto large pans below that contained the lettuce for the side salads ! Trouble was, it was the country club WE belonged to ! :ohdear::ohdear::ohdear: We all eat out, and on the whole, I think we are fortunate that so few really terrible incidents of illness happen, but no matter what kind of house keeper you are, I think the home kitchen is cleaner...LOL !

I sold food to restaurants and other institutions for 25 years. The violations that were named at Darrell‘s restaurant are relatively minor, and I assure you many of them can be found in just about any restaurant you go into. The people out here that are absolutely overreacting don’t have a clue. I’ve eaten at Darrell’s several times and found the restaurant to be clean and the food good. Also at a very reasonable price. My advice would be to ignore the people out here that just enjoy bashing.

Exactly! I sold food for 25 years to restaurants, country clubs and other institutions. None of them were perfect and in many of them you could find the types of violations that were levied against Darrell’s. There are many naïve people out here and those that just like to bash businesses when they can. We’ve already lost enough restaurants in the area.

Everyone should work in a restaurant at some point in their lives. Might change a few folks prospectives. Restaurant work has to rank way up there as a challenge during these times. On a given day, one might be afraid to dine in the most reputable establishment. I will continue to support them for now.

I held a state sanitarian certification for years and I was often called on by state health inspectors when there were sanitation issues.
I can tell you that it is the job of the inspector to find issues, they could be horsndous and glaring or hidden and subtle, but they will find violations.
I have not seen the report, but most of this seems to be just a day to day violation. Are you really going to stop eating there because the employee hand sink was out of soap? Do you know that most of those sinks are there because the laws require it? Most employees don’t use THAT sink. That sink was not useable because there were items in it? Yes, because it is a quick place to place things for later resolution, because nobody uses that sink.
Sure other things were more serious, but these are really not an issue and most were likely resolved before the inspector left.
