We have this little bat who often makes a home under our closed umbrella. Whenever I open it I shake it a couple times and he flies away. Today I went to open the umbrella (which is over my grill) and s/he was there. As usual I shook it and instead of flying away it just fell or maybe glided to the ground. Then I GENTLY broomed it off the patio onto the grass and it is just lying there slowly moving it's wings. I know I shouldn't touch it but should health dept be called in case it is rabid or just leave it for the big birds. Health Dept is closed today.

Don’t think you want vultures in your yard. Use a shovel and throw it in the storm drain. There are much worse things that go down it.

A Bat can not fly from the ground. Use a shovel and place near tree they can climb to elevation when they fall flapping their arms will help to fly away.

I would think birds would prefer it but not sure.

In any case do not touch it or come too close in case it decides you are its enemy.

Does it look like an Old Bat? If so please return her to us. We miss my M.I.L. terribly. She had been having a hard time flying recently. :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

We had a similar problem with a Possum that was struggling. We comforted the poor thing for a while until it awoke and stormed off in a huff. We were looking for a Vet with no luck as it was late and on the weekend.

I would put the bat in a spot that protects it from predators like maybe on the chair for the picnic table and push the chair under the table and see if she's there tomorrow. Who knows? All you can do is give it a shot.

I would call the health department, there is always a possibility it could have rabies.

It's deceased. ;) It obviously got "lost" in the closed umbrella and died "hanging out" (pun intended). . I tried feeding it part of my steak but it's vegetarian.

This is it in his better days on a previous visit on the inside of the umbrella (same one as today as he had the same serial number):

Health Dept will not come out for a sick or rabid animal. Take a shovel and dump it down the sewer. Its not a big deal and no need to make a major production out of it

I’d be more concerned about having a bat living in my umbrella. Must have droppings on your table/patio. Do an online search to learn the dangers of this.

Call Animal Control. Tell them you have a possibly rabid bat and to come pick it up a.s.a.p.

For your information, bats are protected. They eat more bugs and mosquitos every night.
Don’t throw it in the drain

Once had a doctor tell me that any time a mammal acts out of character for its species, you assume it may be rabid until it is proven otherwise.

Once saw a bat out while hiking along a small river. It was about noon, sunny day and the bat was laying on a rock on the other side of the river. Figured it was probably rabid.

I would not just leave it laying around. If it is infected with rabies, another animal could contract the virus by chewing on it.

Burial at sea, flush him.

Storm drain water is not processed, that water goes on your lawn. Sanitary sewer water (toilet) water is.

Bats are a protected species in Florida.

Bats are protected , eat bugs especially those pesky mosquitos that carry diseases - further more they can not take off from the ground. Take a shovel and gently move it to the base of a tree so it can climb high enough to take off. If it is still there tomorrow then call animal control. Do not dump it in the storm drain. That is a very cruel solution.

Call Health Dept. Bats are known carriers of Rabies. If it is sick it may be infected. Also bleach the umbrella real good.

The Joke about my M.I.L. In an earlier post was strictly a Joke. I was lucky with my MIL! An Angel walking the face of the earth. I miss her greatly.

FYI...They are a protected species...so I would not post post what you actually did except if you called the proper authorities for disposition.
