View Full Version : Is it safe for large groups to start up in rec centers?

Many groups as large as 50 setting dates to resume activities.
I cannot imagine trading 7 months of sacrifice and "hunkering" down for getting back together with a social group.
Upwards to 50 people, with masks and 6 feet apart, huffing and puffing in a closed room for up to two hours.
I question the decision making. I understand it is to each his own, but personally, we remain conservative until a vaccine becomes available. We are at this point in time acclimated to an adjusted life style.
Other opinions welcomed.

I agree.
As much as we'd like the club activities to resume, it's just not worth the risk. There are too many new positive tests being reported in the tri-county area for us to feel comfortable.
Hopefully those that believe that they are immune to covid-19 and can resume living their life as they had been stay safe

We have been wondering about this as well.
Thought of going to a zumba session this morning but have decided to wait a bit and see how everything goes
If everyone is wearing a mask and staying socially distant how risky is it really?

Except neither are required at the rec centers....so I assume it's still risky. I'm still trying to understand what changed since March, seem whenever they reduce the masks and social distancing numbers go up, the only thing that seems to have changed is there may be better treatment, but still seems risky to me. Our clubs are continuing to use zoom for meetings.

Will go to one probably in a week or so but if masks are not required than we will do an about face and take off.

Seems like everyone has to make their own decision.
My opinion:
I would LOVE to play cards again at the Rec Center. However, I have spent the last 6-7 months avoiding places where I could be exposed. Given the fact that there hasn’t been a major outbreak in TV, so has everyone else.
IMO, I can’t manage the actions of a crowd that big and have decided to wait. Given that we’re moving into the winter months, there will be an influx of seasonal people who may or may not feel the same way.
I’d just hate to see an outbreak here when we’ve done so well so far.

Well, given vaccines may be little more than 50% effective and less than 50% of people in the US polled say they will get the vaccine - things may not get may not get significantly lower risk than they are now. So may be time to move on at the risk level individuals are comfortable to take.

I'm not going to rec centers and also not playing men's day either when they start Oct. 20. I prefer to live and will wait for the vaccine next year.

I think full hazmats etc for participants should be a requirement ... CDC put out new information just now, Covid spreads MOST airborne which like cigarette smoke, stays in the air and recirculates inside, except unlike smoke it kills quickly.
Don’t be afraid of Covid, but be smart about it. Control it!

You know what some will say, “ If you’re too scared to join a group, stay home! Some of us want to get back to living!”
...and Covid will go on, and on, and on....

And some want to get back to living LONGER!
The notion of staying home being equated to being scared is a inconsiderate reference toward one's personal decision that happens to differ.

Is this data?? I have already lost 2 family members to this virus. It is not a joke or to be taken lightly. Please.
Vaccines MAY be almost 100% effective. And I will be among the group that is vaccinated as soon as available. Then I will be willing to resume large group events.
Until then... i will stay in my bunker

We would be lucky with a vaccine that had a 40% efficacy. So, thousands will die even with a vaccine. Get out and live, unless you are fat or sick. Then stay home.

My mask have lousy bendable things over my nose. When I’m wearing a mask and breathe out (which I do regularly), often my glasses fog. That means I’m emitting my breath into the air. Some of the moisture is being picked up by my mask, and some of that breath is going through the mask, and I’m not shooting my breath forward, but some is going up and into the room, and some of that lingers in the air for several minutes if the particles are very fine. And then, maybe some of the air I breathe in is entering through the same gaps. (Some surgeons who wear glasses actually take their masks to their nose and cheeks with hypoallergenic paper tape, available in all operating rooms, of course.) If I am panting while exercising, I am blowing out and sucking in a MUCH greater volume. (Just as I would if I were shouting at someone during a debate.) a LOT more particles come out.
And then there are the people with ill-fitting masks or people who don’t cover their noses with their masks. Or dirty masks.
All told, you are safer socially distanced and wearing masks than if you weren’t. If you were outside, you would be much safer still.
As for me, I know rationally that my chance of catching something is low, but it still makes me very nervous. I’ll feel much more self-confident about my health after I’ve had a good vaccine. Early next year, I hope!

Amazon now has surgical grade three layer masks on sale 50 masks for about $13. They are light weight and easy to wear. We do not wear a mask while walking from the car to an establishment, but at the door we always put the mask on.
In our case it is not fear, it is commonsense. We do not gamble with our lives, life is too good and I want a lot more of it!

You left out an important fact, that it’s very rare for it to be spread this way. And in those rare cases it’s when the person is in an enclosed room in close quarters with little ventilation for extended periods of time. The “kills quickly” Is a bit dramatic don’t you think?

Stay home - Joining groups is a personal decision, not one you are forced into. Let the rest of us live what remaining time we have as we choose.

I think you are wrong about the groups of 50. Every room will have a maximum number that can be in the room, and this number is determined by the size of room, spacing, and type of activity. No regular room in the Villages can accommodate 50 people under those restrictions, especially those with an active exercise program. Check with the Rec Center you will be attending if you have questions.

Thank you cloisters for keeping the large groups smaller. We are anxious to get back to enjoying the many activities the villages offer. You can say thin the herd all you want .. Hiding in your house will prove more hazardous to your well being than will be enjoying your senior moments..

I think the Villages has done a successful job up til now in controlling the spread of the virus. However, they are acting as if the virus is gone and we can go back to normal. If we do, many will be infected and many, since we are the most vunerable, will die.
Did I miss the announcement of a vaccine or reliable treatment for Covid. I think not.
I hope common sense prevails before it is too late.

For real? Now that is terribly disappointing and disturbing. Publix was one of the few places I'd leave my home for once a week to pick out produce and other groceries with relative safety precautions. Delivery options are inconvenient and unreliable.
There are many of us who are immuno/health compromised who are not willing to risk catching Covid as it could be a death sentence. I really do not want to get sick and I am not ready or willing to risk dying just to go out and have 'fun' around those who are too unconcerned or cavalier about doing their part to protect themselves and their fellow humans. I'm getting really tired of people's attitudes of "If you're scared, stay home." Like it's something we CHOOSE to do, when there is actually no other safe option.
I'm tired of medical/dental appointments being cancelled and not being able to get an appointment. I haven't been to a restaurant, rec center, square, hair salon, movie theater, party, on vacation, etc. since all this started. We keep getting invited to parties and keep turning them down, I even get pressured into hosting a get together when I have no intention of having a group of people in my house.
It is unfair of the anti-maskers to make fun of those of us who are trying to protect ourselves and each other. Studies have proven mathematically that wearing masks and taking other precaution measures are better than not doing anything at all. Until Florida and the rest of this country takes it seriously, this crap is not going to improve any time soon, and will probably get worse, at the very least well into next year. Maybe it could have been nipped in the bud early on, but that chance is long gone.
Frankly, I am more worried about people who lost their jobs and are struggling to put food on the table than I am about retired Boomers partying and drinking at the squares to get their live music fix. Good for them if they are healthy and risk tolerant. I just hope that if they do catch Covid they survive it and don't pass their viral germs to the rest of us. Whatever. It is what it is.
I'm just tired and stressed. Thanks for letting me vent.

The longer you stay away from people your immune system will actually weaken. When I started to work from home and wasn’t around people as much, I was catching more colds. And my doctor said because I am not around people a lot my immune system weakened. So the longer we stay inside, the weaker we will get. This is going away. Be out in the sun. Vitamin D is good I do medical billing for hospitals the “figures” we get from the labs are not accurate. If someone has a “false” positive they call it positive. And if people are positive they go back several times to get tested and EACH time it is positive it gets counted as new. People need to get out and people need to work. I was laid off, I do medical billing. When the hospitals closed only for Covid patients, we didn’t have enough For staff. We have to work to get this country strong again.

in addition to when will clubs be able to meet in the Rec Centers
many AED groups in TV are waiting for CPR/AED training to resume....no word on that yet due to concerns about large group gatherings
my AED group (among many) is in dire need of training more responders due to folks traveling, and those declining to be an 'active' responder due to personal covid-19 concerns

My next-door neighbor was an instructor in a bone builders class, along with two other instructors. She says she won't go back until there is a vaccine.
I will stay away from crowds, even if they are wearing masks, until there is a proven vaccine that has not been pushed to be approved by the party in power.

CDC is still strongly recommending masks, social distancing, and frequent hand washing. The science hasn’t change. If anything has changed it’s the distance from six feet to ten. We will pass on the groups inside the recreation centers, the groups at the Squares and wait a couple of weeks to see who is correct. Golf has become a question mark for us under the new conditions that are effective October 12. I am reading two persons per cart (don’t know if that will be enforced) and PVC removed from the holes. We will have a hard decision to make or perhaps modify our play. We can do that since we are no longer playing competitive and don’t carry a handicap. We can ride together as a couple and just take two putts per hole for a score. Yes, adapt, improvise and overcome and still have fun playing golf. :clap2:
