I was installing sprinkler donuts In the yard of our new home in Bradford and saw a pile of bear poop in the backyard that wasn’t there yesterday; it’s an eerie feeling when you see that in your yard.

I take our fur babies out at night before we go to bed; I will be going out armed from now on.

I’ve had big dogs before; these turds were too big to come out of a dogs butt.

The more natural resources removed for development, the fewer places local animals have to call "home." They have to go somewhere. If you take their back yard for your lanai and birdcage, don't expect them to have gone far.

Also - if it's a Florida Black Bear, reconsider walking your dog armed to protect against it. First of all - it lives on an 80% vegetarian diet. It's not all that interested in meat. Second, and more importantly, it is protected by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It is illegal to kill them.

If you come across a bear, either be completely still, or make a LOT of loud clanging obnoxious noise to scare it away. Take that big AR-15 of yours and bang it against the sidewalk, instead of shooting it. It'll get the bear to leave you alone, and it'll keep you out of jail.

Exactly.

Basically - they were here first. You are the intruder. Get out of their way if you see them, and call Fish and Wildlife if you don't want to scare them away yourself.

Really? I spent 34 years east of the Appalachians, more than half my life, in the forests, far from any concrete jungles, and I’ve had black bears walk around my house peering into windows in the early afternoon when I had a dozen people over for lunch. One climbed a lovely dogwood try to rip down a bird feeder and killed the tree. Another climbed a young peach tree, eight feet high, to pick the ripe peaches and broke off the major limbs. My girlfriend in the woods of New Jersey (yes, there are a LOT of forests there) has a bear go through her yard every couple months, turning over the trash can, breaking the fence, ripping down the bird feeder. My 12 pound papillon chased one this summer and made it run. Her brother has hunted bear in Pennsylvania several times, with a bow. (Never got one.) Eastern Pennsylvania is such good country for bears that they are bigger and nearly always have twins, which is unusual.

It is good to be aware of any dangers around so I can be cautious. I once had a bear peek over my deck while I was having morning coffee out there. Did not know I could move that fast. 😂

Glad you posted this. On two occasions In the past week, I’ve observed the same thing where I walk our dog. (on Horizon Run near the swamp in Pennecamp). Too large to be a dog and full of seeds. I don’t know if it was bear poop, but whatever it came from, I would prefer it was not in our neighborhood.

:1rotfl:let's review the digital social media scenario upon which we are reading

anonymous names, mostly elderly posters :boxing2:living inside a bubble, where misinformation / mistakes / different points of view become some people's reality and creates posts of 500 pages of :blahblahblah:
with trolls and posters who have doctorate degrees from google, :duck: and come to get participation trophy names for a number of posts :ohdear: as the digital coffeehouse :coolsmiley: to chat in the time of a 100 year event :bigbow:

and an anonymous poster announces a random low probability event of poop gets politely asked about credentials :ho: since all posters are now on high alert for posters posting poop

could be the start of a modern day seinfeld monologue/ show. . .

Note: this post is written to laugh at ourselves that TOTV is really the modern day pandemic coffee house where everyone is invited to chat, only a few know the others in real life, and just like the rest of the world, we can't tell who is full of crap from the anonymous name, and like cheers, no one knows your name

and that's why i come here to see what's happening down at adult summer camp while i wait to join and actually work at play

I come from NJ and we have plenty of bears. People behave poorly, endangering them. Do not put out food or garbage cans. DO NOT RUN! They are faster than you! Swing your arms up, making yourself large and make a lot of noise. They should run away. They are beautiful animals and killing one would be a shame. They are only hungry and looking for some easy food.

My NJ house is in NW NJ, the area of the state with the highest density of black bear population. We see bears all the time. I also am quite familiar with bear poo.

We had a bear try to come through the kitchen window in 2007 but my wife ran it off before he got all the way in.

We see them frequently and most of the time they are just passing through. The occasional NBE(Near bear encounter) with a 400+ pounder will raise your heart rate a bit, but mostly just don't freak out and run. Five city kids were hiking nearby back in 2014, they ran, the bear killed one of them.

I have cameras up on the house, here's a video of a pretty big one back in July.

why not be armed ? many make the choice between survival & prey/sheep,,, our whole age group is called 'target' by law enforcement,,, any usual edc weapon would be ineffective against bears but would certainly sting & greatly **** off the animal

Better to carry a camera and a few apples. Unless you corner a black bear or get between a sow and her cubs, the bear will be harmless. I've had many bears in my yard in Vermont. They would come around April and stay till mid September. Always looking for sunflower seeds from my bird feeders. One year it was a mom and three cubs that came around every evening for six months. It was fun to watch them climb the trees and chase each other around, sometimes for an hour and a half. Sometimes I would sneak around the corner of the cabin and roll a few apples at them.
Bears can't see all that well, but can certainly smell exceptionally well.
BTW ... I always had a bear tag with my hunting license, but never shot one.
AND they do taste pretty darn good......in stews or chilli. I'm just too lazy to skin and butcher one for food. I'd rather watch them.

Part of your post is correct, including their dietary preferences, however, you have the right of survival if attacked and killing them in self defense is not a chargeable offense. They are not known to be aggressive, however I wouldn't take that as a reason not to be armed. There are limited hunting permits each year for them in the Central BMU. They vary in size from around 300 lbs to max at 700 lbs. Personally, I wouldn't shoot one unless they charged. I would however notify authorities to let them know where the encounter took place and describe the encounter and let them decide the action to be taken.

A guy I know took one down at very close range with a .357 Magnum handgun. Very scary as it did not stop the bear for some time although one shot had hit the bear in the heart. The guy was camping in a tent and had not properly stashed his food away from the tent. The bear awakened the guy when he stuck his nose under the tent and sniffed. Fortunately the guy had a loaded revolver right there with him. This happened in the mountains in NM.

That's the thing people forget. Other than the buffalos, no one removed any of the wildlife when they tore up the terrain and built the Villages. The wildlife moved themselves back, but they didn't go away. They're still in the area. And now that there's more development, there is more risk of wildlife having no place to go BUT back to where they came from. Whether we have a house there or not.

The ranger told me they had black bears and brown bears. Look for poop to know if they're in the area while out hiking he said. I asked how do I know if it's a brown bear or black bear poop? He said the black bears poop will have seeds in it and the brown bear poop will have an orange whistle in it.

There have been many bear sightings around the area. In Lady Lake there was one in a tree outside a beauty salon. I read somewhere that Ocala National Forest had a big population of black bear. You take their land, they take your food. Very strict laws against killing a black bear in Florida. If you don't believe me, look them up.The other day my "ring" door bell sent me a video of a house 1 mile from me that clearly showed a bobcat crossing the driveway of a house at night, soooo all you night dog walker better beware, there are critters out there just waiting for a meal.

A couple of years ago there was one seen in LaBelle at the intersection of Morse and Moyer Loop. The nature coast starts on the other side of 27/441 so bears around The Villages are no big surprise.

Google Naples Bears. You'd be surprised how many YouTube videos there are of bears in metro Naples, FL!

This post brought to mind the iconic Teddy Bear's Picnic song
that my dad had on a 78 record and would play for all his grandkids:

If you go down in the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise
If you go down in the woods today
You'd better go in disguise!

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain
Because today's the day the
Teddy Bears have their picnic

Picnic time for Teddy Bears
The little Teddy Bears are having
A lovely time today
Watch them, catch them unawares
And see them picnic on their holiday

I live in Charlotte and we had a mom and cub last year for a few weeks. Apparently they got separated and were looking for each other. The wildlife people said they come out of the Ocala National Forest.

I rode my bike across country and when I got to Yellowstone National Park I was given a map and a big orange whistle. I was told to blow the whistle if I saw a bear. The ranger told me they had black bears and brown bears. Look for poop to know if they're in the area while out hiking he said. I asked how do I know if it's a brown bear or black bear poop? He said the black bears poop will have seeds in it and the brown bear poop will have an orange whistle in it.

Not sure if this is the best comment or the bears pooping all over Tom Brady

I was installing sprinkler donuts In the yard of our new home in Bradford and saw a pile of bear poop in the backyard that wasn’t there yesterday; it’s an eerie feeling when you see that in your yard.

I take our fur babies out at night before we go to bed; I will be going out armed from now on.

Do you live in the woods? :1rotfl::1rotfl:

There was a bear that ran through Charlotte Village last year.
There was a wild pig caught in the dumping area between Volusia and Okeechobee this summer. And I also have seen coyotes running into that dump.
I have seen lots of bobcats and foxes here as well.

I wonder if it was Mitchell Trubisky. He might be looking for a new home.

So how many 9mm slugs do you think it would take to bring one down?

I'm always a bit perplexed when people say that we're in the animals territory and they were here first. Does that mean that they think that animals are equal to humans? Was it intended that people not live on earth? Wasn't every place on earth that humans exist originally occupied by animal?

If there is something wrong with us taking animals territories, where exactly are humans supposed to live.

Maybe some believe that the world would be better off without humans.

I would not try with a 9mm. A .44 magnum would be my choice at close range.

"For a bear cartridge anything equal to or more powerful than a . 41 Magnum or . 44 Magnum will be fine. ... 357 Magnum or other similar-caliber load, a well-placed shot with a good bullet will certainly kill a bear, but it's not recommended."

Handgunning Magazine - How to Hunt Black Bear - Bear Loads (https://www.foggymountain.com/hunting-guide-articles/bear-loads-hunt-black-bear/)

Even when hit in the heart a black bear can charge over 150 yards.

"The 422-pound boar I shot through the heart with my bow in 1989 plunged 165 yards before dropping."
